31 Pay heed, Job, listen to me;
    be silent, and I will speak.
32 If you have anything to say, answer me;
    speak, for I desire to justify you.
33 If not, listen to me;
    be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”(A)

Elihu Proclaims God’s Justice

34 Then Elihu continued and said:

“Hear my words, you wise men,
    and give ear to me, you who know,
for the ear tests words
    as the palate tastes food.(B)
Let us choose what is right;
    let us determine among ourselves what is good.(C)

31 Mark this well, Job. Listen to me,
    for I have more to say.
32 But if you have anything to say, go ahead.
    Speak, for I am anxious to see you justified.
33 But if not, then listen to me.
    Keep silent and I will teach you wisdom!”

Elihu Accuses Job of Arrogance

34 Then Elihu said:

“Listen to me, you wise men.
    Pay attention, you who have knowledge.
Job said, ‘The ear tests the words it hears
    just as the mouth distinguishes between foods.’
So let us discern for ourselves what is right;
    let us learn together what is good.
