Job 33:14-22

New International Version

¹⁴For God does speak^(A)—now one way, now another^(B)—
    though no one perceives it.^(C)
¹⁵In a dream,^(D) in a vision^(E) of the night,^(F)
    when deep sleep^(G) falls on people
    as they slumber in their beds,
¹⁶he may speak^(H) in their ears
    and terrify them^(I) with warnings,^(J)
¹⁷to turn them from wrongdoing
    and keep them from pride,^(K)
¹⁸to preserve them from the pit,^(L)
    their lives from perishing by the sword.^[a]^(M)

¹⁹“Or someone may be chastened^(N) on a bed of pain^(O)
    with constant distress in their bones,^(P)
²⁰so that their body finds food^(Q) repulsive
    and their soul loathes the choicest meal.^(R)
²¹Their flesh wastes away to nothing,
    and their bones,^(S) once hidden, now stick out.^(T)
²²They draw near to the pit,^(U)
    and their life to the messengers of death.^[b]^(V)

¹⁴“God speaks time and time again^[a]—
    but nobody notices—
¹⁵in a dream or night vision,
    when a deep sleep falls on mankind
        while they sleep on their beds.
¹⁶That’s when he opens the ear of mankind,
    authenticating his messages^[b] to them,
¹⁷turning a person from his actions,
    keeping him^[c] from pride,
¹⁸sparing his soul from the Pit^[d]
    and his life from violent death.^[e]

¹⁹“He is being reproved by painful bed rest,
    with continual aching in his bones.
²⁰He cannot stand his food,
    and he^[f] has no desire for appetizing food.
²¹His flesh wastes away;
    his bones, which once couldn’t be seen, are visible.
²²His soul is getting close to the Pit;^[g]
    his life is approaching its executioner.”
