Job 33:14-30

New International Version

¹⁴For God does speak^(A)—now one way, now another^(B)—
    though no one perceives it.^(C)
¹⁵In a dream,^(D) in a vision^(E) of the night,^(F)
    when deep sleep^(G) falls on people
    as they slumber in their beds,
¹⁶he may speak^(H) in their ears
    and terrify them^(I) with warnings,^(J)
¹⁷to turn them from wrongdoing
    and keep them from pride,^(K)
¹⁸to preserve them from the pit,^(L)
    their lives from perishing by the sword.^[a]^(M)

¹⁹“Or someone may be chastened^(N) on a bed of pain^(O)
    with constant distress in their bones,^(P)
²⁰so that their body finds food^(Q) repulsive
    and their soul loathes the choicest meal.^(R)
²¹Their flesh wastes away to nothing,
    and their bones,^(S) once hidden, now stick out.^(T)
²²They draw near to the pit,^(U)
    and their life to the messengers of death.^[b]^(V)
²³Yet if there is an angel at their side,
    a messenger,^(W) one out of a thousand,
    sent to tell them how to be upright,^(X)
²⁴and he is gracious to that person and says to God,
    ‘Spare them from going down to the pit;^(Y)
    I have found a ransom for them^(Z)—
²⁵let their flesh be renewed^(AA) like a child’s;
    let them be restored as in the days of their youth’^(AB)—
²⁶then that person can pray to God and find favor with him,^(AC)
    they will see God’s face and shout for joy;^(AD)
    he will restore them to full well-being.^(AE)
²⁷And they will go to others and say,
    ‘I have sinned,^(AF) I have perverted what is right,^(AG)
    but I did not get what I deserved.^(AH)
²⁸God has delivered^(AI) me from going down to the pit,^(AJ)
    and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’^(AK)

²⁹“God does all these things to a person^(AL)—
twice, even three times^(AM)—
³⁰to turn them back^(AN) from the pit,^(AO)
that the light of life^(AP) may shine on them.^(AQ)

Nehemiah 12:31-43

³¹I had the leaders of Judah go up on top of^[a] the wall. I also assigned two large choirs to give thanks. One was to proceed on top of^[b] the wall to the right, toward the Dung Gate.^(A) ³²Hoshaiah and half the leaders of Judah followed them, ³³along with Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, ³⁴Judah, Benjamin,^(B) Shemaiah, Jeremiah, ³⁵as well as some priests with trumpets,^(C) and also Zechariah son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micaiah, the son of Zakkur, the son of Asaph, ³⁶and his associates—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah and Hanani—with musical instruments^(D) prescribed by David the man of God.^(E) Ezra^(F) the teacher of the Law led the procession. ³⁷At the Fountain Gate^(G) they continued directly up the steps of the City of David on the ascent to the wall and passed above the site of David’s palace to the Water Gate^(H) on the east.

³⁸The second choir proceeded in the opposite direction. I followed them on top of^[c] the wall, together with half the people—past the Tower of the Ovens^(I) to the Broad Wall,^(J) ³⁹over the Gate of Ephraim,^(K) the Jeshanah^[d] Gate,^(L) the Fish Gate,^(M) the Tower of Hananel^(N) and the Tower of the Hundred,^(O) as far as the Sheep Gate.^(P) At the Gate of the Guard they stopped.

⁴⁰The two choirs that gave thanks then took their places in the house of God; so did I, together with half the officials, ⁴¹as well as the priests—Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah and Hananiah with their trumpets— ⁴²and also Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malkijah, Elam and Ezer. The choirs sang under the direction of Jezrahiah. ⁴³And on that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away.

³Then Jesus told them this parable:^(A) ⁴“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?^(B) ⁵And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders ⁶and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’^(C) ⁷I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.^(D)
