Het antwoord van Elihu (vervolg)
33 Luister nu, Job, naar wat ik te zeggen heb.
Spits je oren.
2 Luister aandachtig naar mijn woorden.
Luister naar wat ik je zeg.
3 Ik zal helemaal eerlijk zijn.
Ik probeer het zo duidelijk mogelijk uit te leggen.
4 De Geest van God heeft mij gemaakt.
Ik leef door de Geest van de Almachtige God.
5 Als je een antwoord hebt op wat ik je ga zeggen, spreek dan.
Maak je klaar, verdedig jezelf.
6 Voor God zijn jij en ik gelijk.
Ook ik ben uit het stof van de aarde gemaakt.
7 Dus je hoeft niet bang voor me te zijn.
Ik zal het je niet moeilijk maken.
8 Ik heb gehoord wat je over jezelf hebt gezegd,
dat je zelf vindt dat je niets verkeerds hebt gedaan.
9 Je zei: "Ik ben onschuldig.
Ik heb niets verkeerds gedaan.
10 Maar toch heeft Hij iets gevonden om mij slecht te behandelen.
Hij behandelt mij als een vijand.
11 Hij heeft mijn voeten in een blok vastgemaakt.
Hij bespiedt alles wat ik doe."
12 Maar ik zeg je dat je ongelijk hebt.
Want God staat boven de mensen.
13 Waarom vraag je Hem om uitleg?
Hij geeft geen uitleg over wat Hij doet!
14 God spreekt op meerdere manieren,
maar de mensen letten er niet op.
15 God spreekt bijvoorbeeld in een droom, 's nachts,
als de mensen in hun bed liggen te slapen.
16 Dan fluistert Hij de mensen iets in het oor,
om hun zijn wil bekend te maken en hen op te voeden.
17 Zo wil Hij hen weer op het rechte pad brengen.
Hij wil de mensen zo redden van hun eigenwijsheid.
18 Hij spreekt om hen te redden van de dood,
Hij spreekt om te voorkomen dat het slecht met hen afloopt.
19 Ook kan God tot iemand spreken door ziekte.
Dan doen al zijn botten pijn.
20 Hij heeft geen trek meer in zijn eten.
Hij heeft geen zin in lekkere dingen.
21 Hij vermagert tot er nog amper vlees op zijn botten zit.
Zijn botten die eerst onzichtbaar waren, steken nu uit.
22 Hij ligt op sterven,
hij is niet ver meer van de dood.
23 Maar als één van de vele engelen voor hem opkomt
en hem uitlegt wat zijn plicht als mens is,
24 dan zal God medelijden hebben en zeggen:
"Red hem, zodat hij niet zal sterven.
Ik zal het hem vergeven."
25 Dan wordt zijn lichaam weer gezond,
nog gezonder dan hij eerst was.
Hij voelt zich weer net zo sterk als in zijn jeugd.
26 Hij bidt vurig tot God en Hij luistert naar hem.
God is weer blij met hem.
Hij spreekt uit dat deze man onschuldig is.
27 Dan zingt de man het uit:
"Ik had verkeerd gedaan,
dingen gedaan die God niet goed vindt.
Maar ik heb niet de straf gekregen die ik verdiende.
28 God heeft mij gered van de dood.
Nu wandel ik weer in het licht."
29 Zo doet God deze dingen.
Hij doet dat misschien twee of drie keer met een mens.
30 Zo wil Hij hem redden van de dood,
zodat het levenslicht weer op hem valt.
31 Luister hier goed naar, Job.
Wees stil tot ik ben uitgesproken.
32 Als je me iets te antwoorden hebt, zeg het dan.
Spreek, want ik wil je graag gelijk geven.
33 Maar als je niets te antwoorden hebt,
luister dan naar me, dan kun je iets leren van mijn wijsheid. (lees verder)

33 Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.
2 Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.
3 My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.
4 The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.
5 If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up.
6 Behold, I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay.
7 Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.
8 Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,
9 I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.
10 Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy,
11 He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.
12 Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.
13 Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.
14 For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.
15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
16 Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,
17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.
18 He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.
19 He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:
20 So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat.
21 His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.
22 Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers.
23 If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness:
24 Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.
25 His flesh shall be fresher than a child's: he shall return to the days of his youth:
26 He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.
27 He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;
28 He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.
29 Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man,
30 To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.
31 Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I will speak.
32 If thou hast anything to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify thee.
33 If not, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I shall teach thee wisdom.

Elihu Contradicts Job
33 “But please, Job, hear my speech,
And listen to all my words.
2 Now, I open my mouth;
My tongue speaks in my mouth.
3 My words come from my upright heart;
My lips utter pure knowledge.
4 (A)The Spirit of God has made me,
And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
5 If you can answer me,
Set your words in order before me;
Take your stand.
6 (B)Truly I am [a]as your spokesman before God;
I also have been formed out of clay.
7 (C)Surely no fear of me will terrify you,
Nor will my hand be heavy on you.
8 “Surely you have spoken [b]in my hearing,
And I have heard the sound of your words, saying,
9 ‘I(D) am pure, without transgression;
I am innocent, and there is no iniquity in me.
10 Yet He finds occasions against me,
(E)He counts me as His enemy;
11 (F)He puts my feet in the stocks,
He watches all my paths.’
12 “Look, in this you are not righteous.
I will answer you,
For God is greater than man.
13 Why do you (G)contend with Him?
For He does not give an accounting of any of His words.
14 (H)For God may speak in one way, or in another,
Yet man does not perceive it.
15 (I)In a dream, in a vision of the night,
When deep sleep falls upon men,
While slumbering on their beds,

And seals their instruction.
17 In order to turn man from his deed,
And conceal pride from man,
18 He keeps back his soul from the Pit,
And his life from [c]perishing by the sword.
19 “Man is also chastened with pain on his (K)bed,
And with strong pain in many of his bones,

And his soul [d]succulent food.
21 His flesh wastes away from sight,
And his bones stick out which once were not seen.
22 Yes, his soul draws near the Pit,
And his life to the executioners.
23 “If there is a messenger for him,
A mediator, one among a thousand,
To show man His uprightness,
24 Then He is gracious to him, and says,
‘Deliver him from going down to the Pit;
I have found [e]a ransom’;
25 His flesh shall be young like a child’s,
He shall return to the days of his youth.
26 He shall pray to God, and He will delight in him,
He shall see His face with joy,
For He restores to man His righteousness.
27 Then he looks at men and (N)says,
‘I have sinned, and perverted what was right,
And it (O)did not profit me.’
28 He will (P)redeem [f]his soul from going down to the Pit,
And his life shall see the light.
29 “Behold, God works all these things,
Twice, in fact, three times with a man,
30 (Q)To bring back his soul from the Pit,
That he may be enlightened with the light of life.

Elihu Rebukes Job
33 “But now, hear my speech, O Job,
and listen to all my words.
2 Behold, I (A)open my mouth;
the tongue in my mouth speaks.
3 My words declare the uprightness of my heart,
and what my lips know they speak sincerely.
4 (B)The Spirit of God has made me,
and (C)the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
5 (D)Answer me, if you can;
(E)set your words in order before me; take your stand.
6 Behold, I am toward God as you are;
I too was pinched off from a piece of (F)clay.
7 Behold, no (G)fear of me need terrify you;
my (H)pressure will not be heavy upon you.
8 “Surely you have spoken in my ears,
and I have heard the sound of your words.
9 You say, ‘I am (I)pure, without (J)transgression;
I am clean, and there is no iniquity in me.
10 Behold, he finds occasions against me,
he (K)counts me as his enemy,

12 “Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you,
for God is greater than man.

and with continual strife in his (Z)bones,
20 so that his (AA)life loathes bread,
and his appetite (AB)the choicest food.
21 His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen,
and his bones that were not seen (AC)stick out.
22 His soul draws near (AD)the pit,
and his life to (AE)those who bring death.
23 If there be for him (AF)an angel,
(AG)a mediator, (AH)one of the thousand,
to declare to man what is (AI)right for him,
24 and he is merciful to him, and says,
‘Deliver him from going down into the pit;
I have found (AJ)a ransom;
25 let his flesh (AK)become fresh with youth;
let him return to the days of his youthful vigor’;
26 then man[d] (AL)prays to God, and he accepts him;
he (AM)sees his face with a shout of joy,
and he (AN)restores to man his righteousness.
27 He sings before men and says:
‘I (AO)sinned and perverted what was right,
and it was not repaid to me.
28 He has redeemed my (AP)soul from going down (AQ)into the pit,
and my life shall (AR)look upon the light.’
29 “Behold, God does all these things,
twice, (AS)three times, with a man,
30 to bring back his soul from the pit,
that he may be lighted with (AT)the light of life.
31 Pay attention, O Job, listen to me;
be silent, and I will speak.
32 If you have any words, (AU)answer me;
(AV)speak, for I desire to justify you.
33 If not, (AW)listen to me;
be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”
