Job 33:12-25
King James Version
12 Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.
13 Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.
14 For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.
15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
16 Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,
17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.
18 He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.
19 He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:
20 So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat.
21 His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.
22 Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers.
23 If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness:
24 Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.
25 His flesh shall be fresher than a child's: he shall return to the days of his youth:

English Standard Version
12 “Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you,
for God is greater than man.
13 Why do you (A)contend against him,
saying, ‘He (B)will answer none of man's[a] words’?[b]
14 For God (C)speaks in one way,
(D)and in two, though man (E)does not perceive it.
15 In (F)a dream, in (G)a vision of (H)the night,
when (I)deep sleep falls on men,
while they slumber on their beds,
16 then he (J)opens the ears of men
and terrifies[c] them with warnings,
17 that he may turn man aside from his (K)deed
and conceal pride from a man;
18 he keeps back his soul from the pit,
his life from (L)perishing by the sword.
19 “Man is also rebuked with pain on his bed
and with continual strife in his (M)bones,
20 so that his (N)life loathes bread,
and his appetite (O)the choicest food.
21 His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen,
and his bones that were not seen (P)stick out.
22 His soul draws near (Q)the pit,
and his life to (R)those who bring death.
23 If there be for him (S)an angel,
(T)a mediator, (U)one of the thousand,
to declare to man what is (V)right for him,
24 and he is merciful to him, and says,
‘Deliver him from going down into the pit;
I have found (W)a ransom;
25 let his flesh (X)become fresh with youth;
let him return to the days of his youthful vigor’;

12 But I tell you that you are wrong in this matter,
since God is greater than man.(A)
13 Why do you take(B) him to court
for not answering anything a person asks?[a]
14 For God speaks time and again,
but a person may not notice it.
15 In a dream, a vision(C) in the night,
when deep sleep comes over people(D)
as they slumber on their beds,
16 he uncovers their ears(E)
and terrifies them[b] with warnings,
17 in order to turn a person from his actions
and suppress the pride of a person.
18 God spares his soul from the Pit,(F)
his life from crossing the river of death.[c]
19 A person may be disciplined on his bed(G) with pain
and constant distress in his bones,(H)
20 so that he detests bread,
and his soul despises his favorite food.(I)
21 His flesh wastes away to nothing,[d]
and his unseen bones stick out.
22 He draws near to the Pit,
and his life to the executioners.
23 If there is an angel(J) on his side,
one mediator out of a thousand,
to tell a person what is right for him[e]
24 and to be gracious to him and say,
“Spare him from going down to the Pit;
I have found a ransom,”(K)
25 then his flesh will be healthier[f] than in his youth,
and he will return to the days of his youthful vigor.(L)
Job 33:12-25
New American Standard Bible 1995
13 “Why do you (B)complain against Him
That He does not give an account of all His doings?
14 “Indeed (C)God speaks once,
Or twice, yet no one notices it.
15 “In a (D)dream, a vision of the night,
When sound sleep falls on men,
While they slumber in their beds,
16 Then (E)He opens the ears of men,
And seals their instruction,
17 That He may turn man aside from his conduct,
And [b]keep man from pride;
18 He (F)keeps back his soul from the pit,
And his life from [c]passing over (G)into Sheol.
19 “[d]Man is also chastened with (H)pain on his bed,
And with unceasing complaint in his bones;
20 So that his life (I)loathes bread,
And his soul favorite food.
21 “His (J)flesh wastes away from sight,
And his (K)bones which were not seen stick out.
22 “Then (L)his soul draws near to the pit,
And his life to those who bring death.
23 “If there is an angel as (M)mediator for him,
One out of a thousand,
To remind a man what is [e]right for him,
24 Then let him be gracious to him, and say,
‘Deliver him from (N)going down to the pit,
I have found a (O)ransom’;
25 Let his flesh become fresher than in youth,
Let him return to the days of his youthful vigor;
