Elihu’s Angry Response
32 So these three men quit answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.(A) 2 Then Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite(B) from the family of Ram became angry. He was angry at Job because he had justified(C) himself rather than God. 3 He was also angry at Job’s three friends because they had failed to refute him and yet had condemned him.[a]
4 Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were all older than he. 5 But when he saw that the three men could not answer Job, he became angry.
6 So Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite replied:
I am young in years,
while you are old;
therefore I was timid and afraid
to tell(D) you what I know.
7 I thought that age should speak
and maturity should teach wisdom.
8 But it is the spirit in a person—
the breath(E) from the Almighty—
that gives anyone understanding.
9 It is not only the old who are wise
or the elderly who understand how to judge.
10 Therefore I say, “Listen to me.
I too will declare what I know.”
11 Look, I waited for your conclusions;
I listened to your insights
as you sought for words.
12 I paid close attention to you.
Yet no one proved Job wrong;
not one of you refuted his arguments.
13 So do not claim, “We have found wisdom;
let God deal with him, not man.”
14 But Job has not directed his argument to me,
and I will not respond to him with your arguments.
15 Job’s friends are dismayed and can no longer answer;
words have left them.
16 Should I continue to wait now that they are silent,
now that they stand there and no longer answer?
17 I too will answer;[b]
yes, I will tell what I know.
18 For I am full of words,
and my spirit[c] compels me to speak.(F)
19 My heart[d] is like unvented wine;
it is about to burst like new wineskins.(G)
20 I must speak so that I can find relief;
I must open my lips and respond.
21 I will be partial to no one,(H)
and I will not give anyone an undeserved title.
22 For I do not know how to give such titles;
otherwise, my Maker would remove me in an instant.

32 Da hörten jene drei Männer auf, Hiob zu antworten, weil er in seinen Augen gerecht war.
2 Es entbrannte aber der Zorn Elihus, des Sohnes Barachels, des Busiters[a], vom Geschlechte Ram; über Hiob entbrannte sein Zorn, weil er sich selbst für gerechter hielt als Gott; 3 über seine drei Freunde aber entbrannte sein Zorn, weil sie keine Antwort fanden und Hiob doch verurteilten. 4 Elihu aber hatte mit seiner Rede an Hiob gewartet; denn jene waren älter als er. 5 Als aber Elihu sah, daß im Munde jener drei Männer keine Antwort mehr war, entbrannte sein Zorn.
6 Und Elihu, der Sohn Barachels, der Busiter, hob an und sprach:
Jung bin ich an Jahren, ihr aber seid grau;
darum habe ich mich gefürchtet,
euch meinen Befund zu verkünden.
7 Ich dachte: Die Betagten sollen reden
und die Bejahrten ihre Weisheit kundtun.
8 Aber der Geist ist es im Menschen
und der Odem des Allmächtigen, der sie verständig macht.
9 Nicht alle Lehrer sind weise,
und nicht alle Greise verstehen sich aufs Recht.
10 Darum sage ich: Höret auf mich,
so will ich mein Urteil verkünden, ja, auch ich.
11 Siehe, ich habe eure Reden abgewartet,
habe zugehört bis zu eurem Entscheid,
bis ihr die rechten Worte gefunden hättet;
12 und ich habe auf euch gewartet, bis ihr fertig waret;
aber siehe, da ist keiner unter euch, der Hiob widerlegt,
der seine Rede beantwortet hätte.
13 Saget nur ja nicht: „Wir haben die Weisheit gefunden:
Gott wird ihn schlagen, nicht ein Mensch.“
14 Er hat seine Worte nicht an mich gerichtet,
so will ich ihm auch nicht antworten wie ihr.
15 Sie sind geschlagen, sie geben keine Antwort mehr,
die Worte sind ihnen ausgegangen!
16 Ich habe gewartet; weil sie aber nichts sagen,
weil sie dastehen und nicht mehr antworten,
17 so will auch ich nun meinen Teil erwidern
und mein Urteil abgeben, ja, auch ich;
18 denn ich bin voll von Worten,
und der Geist, der in mir ist, drängt mich dazu.
19 Siehe, mein Leib ist wie ein Weinschlauch, der keine Öffnung hat;
wie Schläuche voll Most will er bersten.
20 Darum will ich reden, so wird es mir leichter,
ich will meine Lippen auftun und antworten.
21 Ich will aber keine Person ansehen
und keinem Menschen schmeicheln;
22 denn ich kann nicht schmeicheln,
leicht möchte mein Schöpfer mich sonst wegraffen!

Elihu Contradicts Job’s Friends
32 So these three men ceased answering Job, because he was (A)righteous in his own eyes. 2 Then the wrath of Elihu, the son of Barachel the (B)Buzite, of the family of Ram, was aroused against Job; his wrath was aroused because he (C)justified himself rather than God. 3 Also against his three friends his wrath was aroused, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.
4 Now because they were years older than he, Elihu had waited [a]to speak to Job. 5 When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, his wrath was aroused.
6 So Elihu, the son of Barachel the Buzite, answered and said:
“I am (D)young in years, and you are very old;
Therefore I was afraid,
And dared not declare my opinion to you.
7 I said, [b]‘Age should speak,
And multitude of years should teach wisdom.’
8 But there is a spirit in man,
And (E)the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding.
9 (F)Great[c] men are not always wise,
Nor do the aged always understand justice.
10 “Therefore I say, ‘Listen to me,
I also will declare my opinion.’
11 Indeed I waited for your words,
I listened to your reasonings, while you searched out what to say.
12 I paid close attention to you;
And surely not one of you convinced Job,
Or answered his words—
13 (G)Lest you say,
‘We have found wisdom’;
God will vanquish him, not man.
14 Now he has not [d]directed his words against me;
So I will not answer him with your words.
15 “They are dismayed and answer no more;
Words escape them.
16 And I have waited, because they did not speak,
Because they stood still and answered no more.
17 I also will answer my part,
I too will declare my opinion.
18 For I am full of words;
The spirit within me compels me.
19 Indeed my [e]belly is like wine that has no [f]vent;
It is ready to burst like new wineskins.
20 I will speak, that I may find relief;
I must open my lips and answer.
21 Let me not, I pray, show partiality to anyone;
Nor let me flatter any man.
22 For I do not know how to flatter,
Else my Maker would soon take me (H)away.
