Dios Habla Hoy
31 Yo me he impuesto la norma
de no codiciar ni siquiera a las solteras.
2 ¿Cuál es la recompensa que el Todopoderoso
da a cada hombre desde lo alto del cielo?
3 ¿No es acaso al malvado y pecador
a quien corresponde la desgracia?
4 ¿O es que Dios no ve lo que hago
ni observa cada uno de mis pasos?
5 Juro que nunca he procedido con malicia
ni he intentado engañar a nadie.
6 ¡Que Dios me pese con balanza justa,
y se convencerá de mi inocencia!
7 Si me he desviado del camino recto,
si me he dejado llevar de la codicia,
si algo ajeno se ha encontrado en mi poder,
8 que otros se coman lo que yo he sembrado
y arranquen de raíz lo que planté.
9 Si me he dejado seducir de una mujer
o me he puesto a espiar a la mujer de mi vecino,
10 que mi esposa sea esclava de otros
y que extraños se acuesten con ella.
11 Pues mis acciones serían infames;
serían actos dignos de castigo.
12 Serían como un incendio destructor
que destruiría todo lo que tengo.
13 Si mis criados me reclamaban algo,
yo siempre atendía a sus peticiones.
14 ¿De qué otra manera podría yo presentarme ante Dios?
¿Qué le respondería cuando él me pidiera cuentas?
15 Un mismo Dios nos formó en el vientre,
y tanto a ellos como a mí nos dio la vida.
16 Nunca dejé de socorrer al pobre en su necesidad,
ni permití que las viudas pasaran hambre.
17 Nunca comí yo solo mi bocado
sin compartirlo con el huérfano.
18 Siempre traté al huérfano como un padre;
siempre fui protector de las viudas.
19 Cuando yo veía que alguien moría por falta de ropa,
o que un pobre no tenía con qué cubrirse,
20 con la lana de mis propias ovejas le daba calor,
y él me quedaba agradecido.
21 Jamás amenacé a un huérfano
valiéndome de mi influencia con los jueces.
22 Y si esto no es verdad,
que los brazos se me rompan;
que se me caigan de los hombros.
23 Yo temía el castigo de Dios;
¡no habría podido resistir su majestad!
24 Jamás el oro ha sido para mí
la base de mi confianza y seguridad.
25 Jamás mi dicha ha consistido en tener grandes riquezas
o en ganar mucho dinero.
26 He visto brillar el sol
y avanzar la luna en todo su esplendor,
27 pero jamás los adoré en secreto
ni les envié besos con la mano.
28 Esto habría sido digno de castigo;
¡habría sido negar al Dios del cielo!
29 Nunca me alegré del mal de mi enemigo,
ni de que le hubiera venido una desgracia.
30 Jamás lancé sobre él una maldición
ni le deseé la muerte.
31 Si algunos de los que vivían conmigo
querían abusar de un extranjero,
32 yo no lo dejaba pasar la noche en la calle.
Siempre abrí las puertas de mi casa a los viajeros.
33 Jamás he ocultado mis faltas, como hacen otros,
ni he tratado de tenerlas en secreto
34 por miedo de la gente.
Jamás me he quedado encerrado y en silencio
por temor al desprecio de mis familiares.
35 ¡Ojalá que alguien me escuchara!
Con mi firma respaldo lo que he dicho;
ahora, ¡que el Todopoderoso me responda!
Las acusaciones que me hagan por escrito,
36 las llevaré conmigo honrosamente;
me las pondré por corona.
37 Yo daré cuenta a Dios de todas mis acciones,
me acercaré con dignidad a su presencia.
38 Mis tierras no claman al cielo contra mí,
ni sus surcos lloran afligidos.
39 Pero si a alguien le he robado sus productos,
o si he explotado a los campesinos,
40 ¡que mis tierras produzcan espinos en vez de trigo,
y mala hierba en vez de cebada!
Con esto terminó Job su defensa.

Job Defends His Righteousness
31 “I have made a covenant with my eyes;
Why then should I [a]look upon a (A)young woman?
2 For what is the (B)allotment of God from above,
And the inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
3 Is it not destruction for the wicked,
And disaster for the workers of iniquity?
4 (C)Does He not see my ways,
And count all my steps?
5 “If I have walked with falsehood,
Or if my foot has hastened to deceit,
6 [b]Let me be weighed on honest scales,
That God may know my (D)integrity.
7 If my step has turned from the way,
Or (E)my heart walked after my eyes,
Or if any spot adheres to my hands,
8 Then (F)let me sow, and another eat;
Yes, let my harvest be [c]rooted out.
9 “If my heart has been enticed by a woman,
Or if I have lurked at my neighbor’s door,
10 Then let my wife grind for (G)another,
And let others bow down over her.
11 For that would be wickedness;
Yes, (H)it would be iniquity deserving of judgment.
12 For that would be a fire that consumes to destruction,
And would root out all my increase.
13 “If I have (I)despised the cause of my male or female servant
When they complained against me,
14 What then shall I do when (J)God rises up?
When He punishes, how shall I answer Him?
15 (K)Did not He who made me in the womb make them?
Did not the same One fashion us in the womb?
16 “If I have kept the poor from their desire,
Or caused the eyes of the widow to (L)fail,
17 Or eaten my morsel by myself,
So that the fatherless could not eat of it
18 (But from my youth I reared him as a father,
And from my mother’s womb I guided [d]the widow);
19 If I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing,
Or any poor man without covering;
20 If his [e]heart has not (M)blessed me,
And if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
21 If I have raised my hand (N)against the fatherless,
When I saw I had help in the gate;
22 Then let my arm fall from my shoulder,
Let my arm be torn from the socket.
23 For (O)destruction from God is a terror to me,
And because of His magnificence I cannot endure.
24 “If(P) I have made gold my hope,
Or said to fine gold, ‘You are my confidence’;
25 (Q)If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great,
And because my hand had gained much;
26 (R)If I have observed the [f]sun when it shines,
Or the moon moving in brightness,
27 So that my heart has been secretly enticed,
And my mouth has kissed my hand;
28 This also would be an iniquity deserving of judgment,
For I would have denied God who is above.
29 “If(S) I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me,
Or lifted myself up when evil found him
30 (T)(Indeed I have not allowed my mouth to sin
By asking for a curse on his [g]soul);
31 If the men of my tent have not said,
‘Who is there that has not been satisfied with his meat?’
32 (U)(But no sojourner had to lodge in the street,
For I have opened my doors to the [h]traveler);
33 If I have covered my transgressions (V)as[i] Adam,
By hiding my iniquity in my bosom,
34 Because I feared the great (W)multitude,
And dreaded the contempt of families,
So that I kept silence
And did not go out of the door—
35 (X)Oh, that I had one to hear me!
Here is my mark.
Oh, (Y)that the Almighty would answer me,
That my [j]Prosecutor had written a book!
36 Surely I would carry it on my shoulder,
And bind it on me like a crown;
37 I would declare to Him the number of my steps;
Like a prince I would approach Him.
38 “If my land cries out against me,
And its furrows weep together;
39 If (Z)I have eaten its [k]fruit without money,
Or (AA)caused its owners to lose their lives;
40 Then let (AB)thistles grow instead of wheat,
And weeds instead of barley.”

31 I made a brit (covenant) with mine eyes; how then look I upon a betulah?
2 For what chelek of Eloah is there from above? And what nachalah of Shaddai from on high?
3 Is not destruction to the wicked? And a disaster to the poalei aven (workers of wrong)?
4 Doth not He see my derech, and count all my steps?
5 If I have walked with shav (vanity, falsehood), or if my regel hath hasted to mirmah (deceit),
6 Let me be weighed in scales of tzedek that Eloah may know mine tom (integrity).
7 If my step hath turned out of the derech, and mine lev walked after mine eyes, and if any mum hath cleaved to mine hands,
8 Then let me sow, and let acher (another) eat; yea, let my harvest be uprooted.
9 If mine lev have been deceived by an isha, or if I have lurked at petach (doorway) of my re’a;
10 Then let my isha grind for another, and let another kneel over her.
11 For this is a heinous crime; yea, it is an avon to be brought before judges.
12 For it is an eish that consumeth to Abaddon, and would root out all mine increase.
13 If I did despise the mishpat (cause) of my eved or of my amah, when they contended with me,
14 What then shall I do when El riseth up? And when He visiteth, what shall I answer Him?
15 Did not He that made me in the beten make them? And did not Echad fashion us in the rechem?
16 If I have withheld the poor from their chefetz (desire), or have caused the eyes of the almanah to grow weary,
17 Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the yatom hath not eaten thereof;
18 (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with an av, and I have guided her from beten immi;)
19 If I have seen any oved (one perishing) for want of clothing, or any evyon (needy) without covering,
20 If his heart did not bless me for warming him with the giz (fleece) of my sheep,
21 If I have lifted up my yad against the yatom, when I saw my influence in the sha’ar (gate, court);
22 Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder, and mine zero’a be broken from its socket.
23 For destruction from El was a pachad to me, and by reason of His majesty I could not endure.
24 If I have made zahav my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my security,
25 If I rejoice because my wealth was rav (great), and because mine yad had gotten much,
26 If I beheld the ohr when it shined, or the yarei’ach moving in splendor,
27 And my lev hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my yad [in heathen worship];
28 This also were an avon to be punished by the judge; for then I would have been unfaithful, denying El that is on high.
29 If I rejoice at the misfortune of him that hated me, or gloated when rah found him,
30 Neither have I allowed my mouth to sin by invoking a curse to his nefesh.
31 Have the men of my ohel not said, Where can we find one who has not been sated with his basar (meat)?
32 The stranger did not spend the night in the street, but I opened my delet to the ger.
33 If I concealed my peysha like Adam, by hiding mine avon in my heart,
34 Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of mishpekhot terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of doors?
35 Oh that one would hear me! See, my tav [signature], that Shaddai would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a sefer [of indictment];
36 Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder, and bind it to me like atarot (crowns).
37 I would declare unto Him the number of my steps; like a nagid (prince) would I go near unto Him.
38 If my adamah cry against me, or if the furrows had wept together,
39 If I have eaten the yield thereof without kesef (payment), or have broken the nefesh of the tenants thereof,
40 Let thistles grow instead of chittim (wheat), and weed instead of barley. The divrei Iyov are ended.
