31 Ett förbund slöt jag med mina ögon: aldrig skulle jag skåda efter någon jungfru.
2 Vilken lott finge jag eljest av Gud i höjden, vilken arvedel av den Allsmäktige därovan?
3 Ofärd kommer ju över de orättfärdiga, och olycka drabbar ogärningsmän.
4 Ser icke han mina vägar, räknar han ej alla mina steg?
5 Har jag väl umgåtts med lögn, och har min fot varit snar till svek?
6 Nej, må jag vägas på en riktig våg, så skall Gud förnimma min ostrafflighet.
7 Hava mina steg vikit av ifrån vägen, har mitt hjärta följt efter mina ögon, eller låder vid min händer en fläck?
8 Då må en annan äta var jag har sått, och vad jag har planterat må ryckas upp med roten.
9 Har mitt hjärta låtit dåra sig av någon kvinna, så att jag har stått på lur vid min nästas dörr?
10 Då må min hustru mala mjöl åt en annan, och främmande män må då famntaga henne.
11 Ja, sådant hade varit en skändlighet, en straffbar missgärning hade det varit,
12 en eld som skulle förtära intill avgrunden och förhärja till roten all min gröda.
13 Har jag kränkt min tjänares eller tjänarinnas rätt, när de hade någon tvist med mig?
14 Vad skulle jag då göra, när Gud stode upp, och när han hölle räfst, vad kunde jag då svara honom?
15 Han som skapade mig skapade ju och dem i moderlivet, han, densamme, har berett dem i modersskötet.
16 Har jag vägrat de arma vad de begärde eller låtit änkans ögon försmäkta?
17 Har jag ätit mitt brödstycke allena, utan att den faderlöse och har fått äta därav?
18 Nej, från min ungdom fostrades han hos mig såsom hos en fader, och från min moders liv var jag änkors ledare.
19 Har jag kunnat se en olycklig gå utan kläder, se en fattig ej äga något att skyla sig med?
20 Måste ej fastmer hans länd välsigna mig, och fick han ej värma sig i ull av mina lamm?
21 Har jag lyft min hand mot den faderlöse, därför att jag såg mig hava medhåll i porten?
22 Då må min axel lossna från sitt fäste och min arm brytas av ifrån sin led.
23 Jag måste då frukta ofärd ifrån Gud och skulle stå maktlös inför hans majestät.
24 Har jag satt mitt hopp till guldet och kallat guldklimpen min förtröstan?
25 Var det min glädje att min rikedom blev så stor, och att min hand förvärvade så mycket?
26 Hände det, när jag såg solljuset, huru det sken, och månen, huru härligt den gick fram,
27 att mitt hjärta hemligen lät dåra sig, så att jag med handkyss gav dem min hyllning?
28 Nej, också det hade varit en straffbar missgärning; därmed hade jag ju förnekat Gud i höjden.
29 Har jag glatt mig åt min fiendes ofärd och fröjdats, när olycka träffade honom?
30 Nej, jag tillstadde ej min mun att synda så, ej att med förbannelse begära hans liv.
31 Och kan mitt husfolk icke bevittna att envar fick mätta sig av kött vid mitt bord?
32 Främlingen behövde ej stanna över natten på gatan, mina dörrar lät jag stå öppna utåt vägen.
33 Har jag på människovis skylt mina överträdelser och gömt min missgärning i min barm,
34 av fruktan för den stora hopen och av rädsla för stamfränders förakt, så att jag teg och ej gick utom min dörr?
35 Ack att någon funnes, som ville höra mig! Jag har sagt mitt ord. Den Allsmäktige må nu svara mig; ack att jag finge min vederparts motskrift!
36 Sannerligen, jag skulle då bära den högt på min skuldra, såsom en krona skulle jag fästa den på mig.
37 Jag ville då göra honom räkenskap för alla mina steg, lik en furste skulle jag då träda inför honom.
38 Har min mark höjt rop över mig, och hava dess fåror gråtit med varandra?
39 Har jag förtärt dess gröda obetald eller utpinat dess brukares liv?
40 Då må törne växa upp för vete, och ogräs i stället för korn. Slut på Jobs tal.

4 上帝岂不鉴察我走的路，
数算我的脚步？

让祂知道我的清白。
7 倘若我的脚偏离正路，
贪图眼目之欲，

10 愿我妻子为别人推磨，
愿别人与她同房。

向它们吻手示敬，
28 就是犯了当受审判的罪恶，

29 “我何曾因敌人遭殃而欢喜，
因他们遇祸而快乐？
30 我从未咒诅他们丧命，

Living Bible
31 “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust upon a girl. 2-3 I know full well that Almighty God above sends calamity on those who do. 4 He sees everything I do and every step I take.
5 “If I have lied and deceived— 6 but God knows that I am innocent— 7-8 or if I have stepped off God’s pathway, or if my heart has lusted for what my eyes have seen, or if I am guilty of any other sin, then let someone else reap the crops I have sown and let all that I have planted be rooted out.
9 “Or if I have longed for another man’s wife, 10 then may I die, and may my wife be in another man’s home and someone else become her husband. 11 For lust is a shameful sin, a crime that should be punished. 12 It is a devastating fire that destroys to hell and would root out all I have planted.
13 “If I have been unfair to my servants, 14 how could I face God? What could I say when he questioned me about it? 15 For God made me and made my servant too. He created us both.
16 “If I have hurt the poor, or caused widows to weep, 17 or refused food to hungry orphans— 18 (but we have always cared for orphans in our home, treating them as our own children)— 19-20 or if I have seen anyone freezing and not given him clothing or fleece from my sheep to keep him warm, 21 or if I have taken advantage of an orphan because I thought I could get away with it— 22 if I have done any of these things, then let my arm be torn from its socket! Let my shoulder be wrenched out of place! 23 Rather that than face the judgment sent by God; that I dread more than anything else. For if the majesty of God opposes me, what hope is there?
24 “If I have put my trust in money, 25 if my happiness depends on wealth, 26 or if I have looked at the sun shining in the skies or the moon walking down her silver pathway 27 and my heart has been secretly enticed, and I have worshiped them by kissing my hand to them, 28 this, too, must be punished by the judges. For if I had done such things, it would mean that I denied the God of heaven.
29 “If I have rejoiced at harm to an enemy— 30 (but actually I have never cursed anyone nor asked for revenge)— 31 or if any of my servants have ever gone hungry— 32 (actually I have never turned away even a stranger but have opened my doors to all)— 33 or if, like Adam, I have tried to hide my sins, 34 fearing the crowd and its contempt so that I refused to acknowledge my sin and do not go out of my way to help others— 35 (oh, that there were someone who would listen to me and try to see my side of this argument. Look, I will sign my signature to my defense; now let the Almighty show me that I am wrong; let him approve the indictments made against me by my enemies. 36 I would treasure it like a crown. 37 Then I would tell him exactly what I have done and why, presenting my defense as one he listens to).
38-39 “Or if my land accuses me because I stole the fruit it bears, or if I have murdered its owners to get their land for myself, 40 then let thistles grow on that land instead of wheat, and weeds instead of barley.”

31 I dictated a covenant (an agreement) to my eyes; how then could I look [lustfully] upon a girl?
2 For what portion should I have from God above [if I were lewd], and what heritage from the Almighty on high?
3 Does not calamity [justly] befall the unrighteous, and disaster the workers of iniquity?
4 Does not [God] see my ways and count all my steps?
5 If I have walked with falsehood or vanity, or if my foot has hastened to deceit—
6 Oh, let me be weighed in a just balance and let Him weigh me, that God may know my integrity!
7 If my step has turned out of [God’s] way, and my heart has gone the way my eyes [covetously] invited, and if any spot has stained my hands with guilt,
8 Then let me sow and let another eat; yes, let the produce of my field or my offspring be rooted out.
9 If my heart has been deceived and I made a fool by a woman, or if I have [covetously] laid wait at my neighbor’s door [until his departure],
10 Then let my wife grind [meal, like a bondslave] for another, and let others bow down upon her.
11 For [adultery] is a heinous and chief crime, an iniquity [to demand action by] the judges and punishment.(A)
12 For [uncontrolled passion] is a fire which consumes to Abaddon (to destruction, ruin, and the place of final torment); [that fire once lighted would rage until all is consumed] and would burn to the root all my [life’s] increase.
13 If I have despised and rejected the cause of my manservant or my maidservant when they contended or brought a complaint against me,
14 What then shall I do when God rises up [to judge]? When He visits [to inquire of me], what shall I answer Him?(B)
15 Did not He Who made me in the womb make [my servant]? And did not One fashion us both in the womb?(C)
16 If I have withheld from the poor and needy what they desired, or have caused the eyes of the widow to look in vain [for relief],
17 Or have eaten my morsel alone and have not shared it with the fatherless—
18 No, but from my youth [the fatherless] grew up with me as a father, and I have been [the widow’s] guide from my mother’s womb—
19 If I have seen anyone perish for want of clothing, or any poor person without covering,
20 If his loins have not blessed me [for clothing them], and if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep,
21 If I have lifted my hand against the fatherless when I saw [that the judges would be favorable and be] my help at the [council] gate,
22 Then let my shoulder fall away from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from its socket.
23 For calamity from God was a terror to me, and because of His majesty I could not endure [to face Him] and could do nothing.(D)
24 If I have made gold my trust and hope or have said to fine gold, You are my confidence,
25 If I rejoiced because my wealth was great and because my [powerful] hand [alone] had gotten much,
26 If I beheld [as an object of worship] the sunlight when it shone or the moon walking in its brightness,
27 And my heart has been secretly enticed by them or my mouth has kissed my hand [in homage to them],
28 This also would have been [a heinous and principal] iniquity to demand the judges’ action and punishment, for I would have denied and been false to the God Who is above.(E)
29 If I rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me or lifted myself up [in malicious triumph] when evil overtook him—
30 No, I have let my mouth sin neither by cursing my enemy nor by praying that he might die—
31 [Just ask] if the men of my tent will not say, Who can find one in need who has not been satisfied with food he gave them?—
32 The temporary resident has not lodged in the street, but I have opened my door to the wayfaring man—
33 If like Adam or like [other] men I have concealed my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom
34 Because I feared the great multitude and the contempt of families terrified me so that I kept silence and did not go out of the door—
35 Oh, for a hearing! Oh, for an answer from the Almighty! Let my adversary write out His indictment [and put His vague accusations in tangible form] in a book!
36 Surely I would [proudly] bear it on my shoulder and wind the scroll about my head as a diadem.
37 I would count out to Him the number of my steps [with every detail of my life], approaching His presence as a prince—
38 For if my land has cried out against me and its furrows have complained together with tears [that I have no right to them],
39 If I have eaten its fruits without paying for them or have caused its [rightful] owners to breathe their last,
40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat and cockleburs instead of barley. The [controversial] words of Job [with his friends] are ended.
