31 I have made a covenant with my eyes.(A)
How then could I look at a young woman?[a],(B)
2 For what portion(C) would I have from God above,
or what inheritance from the Almighty on high?
3 Doesn’t disaster come to the unjust
and misfortune to evildoers?
4 Does he not see my ways
and number all my steps?(D)
5 If I have walked in falsehood
or my foot has rushed to deceit,
6 let God weigh me on accurate scales,(E)
and he will recognise my integrity.(F)
7 If my step has turned from the way,
my heart has followed my eyes,
or impurity has stained my hands,(G)
8 let someone else eat what I have sown,
and let my crops be uprooted.(H)
9 If my heart has gone astray over a woman
or I have lurked at my neighbour’s door,
10 let my own wife grind grain for another man,
and let other men sleep with[b] her.
11 For that would be a disgrace;
it would be an iniquity deserving punishment.(I)
12 For it is a fire that consumes down to Abaddon;
it would destroy my entire harvest.(J)
13 If I have dismissed the case of my male or female servants
when they made a complaint against me,
14 what could I do when God stands up to judge?
How should I answer him when he calls me to account?
15 Did not the one who made me in the womb also make them?
Did not the same God form us both in the womb?(K)
16 If I have refused the wishes of the poor
or let the widow’s(L) eyes go blind,
17 if I have eaten my few crumbs alone
without letting the fatherless eat any of it –
18 for from my youth, I brought him up as his father,
and since the day I was born[c] I guided the widow –
19 if I have seen anyone dying for lack of clothing
or a needy person without a cloak,(M)
20 if he[d] did not bless me
while warming himself with the fleece from my sheep,
21 if I ever cast my vote[e] against a fatherless child
when I saw that I had support in the city gate,(N)
22 then let my shoulder blade fall from my back,
and my arm be pulled from its socket.
23 For disaster from God terrifies me,
and because of his majesty I could not do these things.(O)
24 If I placed my confidence in gold
or called fine gold my trust,(P)
25 if I have rejoiced because my wealth is great
or because my own hand has acquired so much,
26 if I have gazed at the sun when it was shining
or at the moon moving in splendour,(Q)
27 so that my heart was secretly enticed
and I threw them a kiss,[f]
28 this would also be an iniquity deserving punishment,
for I would have denied God above.
29 Have I rejoiced over my enemy’s distress,
or become excited when trouble came his way?
30 I have not allowed my mouth to sin
by asking for his life with a curse.
31 Haven’t the members of my household said,
‘Who is there who has not had enough to eat at Job’s table? ’
32 No stranger had to spend the night on the street,
for I opened my door to the traveller.
33 Have I covered my transgressions(R) as others do[g]
by hiding my iniquity in my heart(S)
34 because I greatly feared the crowds
and because the contempt of the clans terrified me,
so I grew silent and would not go outside?
35 If only I had someone to hear my case!(T)
Here is my signature; let the Almighty answer me.
Let my Opponent compose his indictment.
36 I would surely carry it on my shoulder
and wear it like a crown.(U)
37 I would give him an account of all my steps;
I would approach him like a prince.
38 If my land cries out against me
and its furrows join in weeping,
39 if I have consumed its produce without payment
or shown contempt for its tenants,[h]
40 then let thorns(V) grow instead of wheat
and stinkweed(W) instead of barley.

2 Thượng Đế đã hứa gì cho dân Ngài?
Đấng Toàn Năng đã dự định gì từ trên cao kia [a]?
3 Đó là sự tàn hại cho kẻ ác,
và thảm họa cho kẻ làm quấy.
4 Thượng Đế thấy con đường tôi đi,
Ngài đếm từng bước tôi.
5 Nếu tôi có bất lương,
hay dối trá cùng kẻ khác,
6 thì xin Ngài để tôi lên cái cân chính xác [b].
Ngài sẽ thấy tôi không có làm gì quấy.
7 Nếu tôi có quay lưng để khỏi làm điều phải,
hay mắt tôi hướng dẫn lòng tôi làm điều sái bậy,
hoặc tay tôi có dơ bẩn,
8 thì cầu cho kẻ khác ăn lấy vật tôi đã trồng,
và mùa màng tôi bị nhổ lên.
9 Nếu tôi có ham muốn người đàn bà khác,
hay rình mò vợ người láng giềng tôi nơi cửa nhà người,
10 thì nguyền cho vợ tôi xay lúa cho người đàn ông khác,
để cho người khác ăn nằm với nàng.
11 Điều đó sẽ thật sỉ nhục,
một tội lỗi đáng bị trừng phạt.
12 Giống như lửa đốt cháy và tiêu hủy;
những gì tôi làm sẽ bị nhổ lên.
13 Nếu tôi có bất công đối với tôi trai hay tớ gái của tôi,

17 Tôi không giữ khư khư thức ăn lấy cho mình,
nhưng chia xẻ với trẻ mồ côi.
18 Từ khi còn trẻ, tôi đã như cha của trẻ mồ côi.
Từ lúc mới sinh, tôi hướng dẫn người góa bụa.
19 Tôi chưa để ai chết vì không quần áo mặc,
hay để kẻ khốn cùng thiếu áo che thân.
20 Lòng của họ chúc phước cho tôi,
vì tôi dùng len của chiên tôi đắp cho họ ấm.
21 Tôi chưa hề làm hại trẻ mồ côi [c],
dù rằng tôi biết sẽ thắng kiện.
22 Nếu tôi có làm điều đó,
nguyền cho tay tôi rớt ra khỏi vai,
và đứt ra khỏi khớp nối.
23 Tôi sợ sự hủy hoại của Thượng Đế,
tôi kinh hãi sự oai nghiêm Ngài [d],
nên tôi không thể làm những điều đó.
24 Tôi không đặt niềm tin nơi vàng,
hay bảo với vàng ròng rằng,
‘Ngươi là niềm an ninh ta.’
25 Tôi chưa hề ăn mừng sự giàu có tôi,
hay của cải tay tôi làm ra.
26 Tôi chưa hề suy nghĩ đến việc bái lạy mặt trời rực sáng,
hay thán phục mặt trăng di chuyển trong vinh quang,
27 để cho lòng tôi bị kéo xa khỏi Thượng Đế.
Tay tôi chưa hề dâng cho mặt trời, mặt trăng cái hôn sùng bái nào.
28 Nếu tôi đã làm những điều đó, quả thật đắc tội, đáng trừng phạt,
vì tôi đã không trung tín với Thượng Đế.
29 Tôi không hớn hở khi kẻ thù tôi lâm nạn,
hay cười vui sướng khi nó gặp khốn khó.
30 Tôi không để miệng tôi phạm tội,
bằng cách nguyền rủa mạng sống kẻ thù tôi.
31 Những gia nhân của tôi đều nói,

32 Không có khách lạ nào phải ngủ đêm ngoài đường phố,
vì tôi luôn mời khách lữ hành vào nhà mình.

Xin Đấng Toàn Năng trả lời cho tôi;

36 Tôi sẽ mang lời khai trên vai tôi;
và đội nó như mão triều.
37 Tôi sẽ giải thích cùng Thượng Đế mỗi việc tôi làm,
và đến gần Ngài như một quan trưởng.
38 Nếu đất kêu la nghịch tôi,
và nếu các luống cày nó không đẫm nước mắt,
39 Nếu tôi đã cướp mùa màng của đất mà không đền bù,
hay làm mất tinh thần kẻ làm công cho đất tôi,
40 thì nguyền cho gai gốc mọc lên thay vì lúa,
và cỏ dại mọc thay vì lúa mạch.”

31 I have made a solemn promise
never to look with lust at a woman.
2 What does Almighty God do to us?
How does he repay human deeds?
3 He sends disaster and ruin
to those who do wrong.
4 God knows everything I do;
he sees every step I take.
5 I swear I have never acted wickedly
and never tried to deceive others.
6 Let God weigh me on honest scales,
and he will see how innocent I am.
7 If I have turned from the right path
or let myself be attracted to evil,
if my hands are stained with sin,
8 then let my crops be destroyed,
or let others eat the food I grow.
9 If I have been attracted to my neighbor's wife,
and waited, hidden, outside her door,
10 then let my wife cook another man's food
and sleep in another man's bed.
11 Such wickedness should be punished by death.
12 It would be like a destructive, hellish fire,
consuming everything I have.
13 When any of my servants complained against me,
I would listen and treat them fairly.
14 If I did not, how could I then face God?
What could I say when God came to judge me?
15 The same God who created me
created my servants also.
16 (A)I have never refused to help the poor;
never have I let widows live in despair
17 or let orphans go hungry while I ate.
18 All my life I have taken care of them.[a]
19 When I found someone in need,
too poor to buy clothes,
20 I would give him clothing made of wool
that had come from my own flock of sheep.
Then he would praise me with all his heart.
21 If I have ever cheated an orphan,
knowing I could win in court,
22 then may my arms be broken;
may they be torn from my shoulders.
23 Because I fear God's punishment,
I could never do such a thing.
24 (B)I have never trusted in riches
25 or taken pride in my wealth.
26 I have never worshiped the sun in its brightness
or the moon in all its beauty.
27 I have not been led astray to honor them
by kissing my hand in reverence to them.
28 Such a sin should be punished by death;
it denies Almighty God.
29 I have never been glad when my enemies suffered,
or pleased when they met with disaster;
30 I never sinned by praying for their death.
31 All those who work for me know
that I have always welcomed strangers.
32 I invited travelers into my home
and never let them sleep in the streets.
33 Others try to hide their sins,
but I have never concealed mine.
34 I have never feared what people would say;
I have never kept quiet or stayed indoors
because I feared their scorn.
35 Will no one listen to what I am saying?
I swear that every word is true.
Let Almighty God answer me.
If the charges my opponent brings against me
were written down so that I could see them,
36 I would wear them proudly on my shoulder
and place them on my head like a crown.
37 I would tell God everything I have done,
and hold my head high in his presence.
38 If I have stolen the land I farm
and taken it from its rightful owners—
39 if I have eaten the food that grew there
but let the farmers that grew it starve—
40 then instead of wheat and barley,
may weeds and thistles grow.

7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;
8 Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.
9 If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;
10 Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.
11 For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.
12 For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.
13 If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;
14 What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?
15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?
16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;
17 Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;
18 (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;)
19 If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;
20 If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:
22 Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.
23 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.
24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;
25 If I rejoice because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;
26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;
27 And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:
28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.
29 If I rejoice at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:
30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.
31 If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.
32 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.
33 If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:
34 Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?
35 Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.
36 Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.
37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.
38 If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;
39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:
40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

and my hand offered them a kiss of homage,(BD)
28 then these also would be sins to be judged,(BE)
for I would have been unfaithful to God on high.(BF)
29 “If I have rejoiced at my enemy’s misfortune(BG)
or gloated over the trouble that came to him(BH)—
30 I have not allowed my mouth to sin
by invoking a curse against their life(BI)—
31 if those of my household have never said,
‘Who has not been filled with Job’s meat?’(BJ)—
32 but no stranger had to spend the night in the street,
for my door was always open to the traveler(BK)—
33 if I have concealed(BL) my sin as people do,[b]
by hiding(BM) my guilt in my heart
34 because I so feared the crowd(BN)
and so dreaded the contempt of the clans
that I kept silent(BO) and would not go outside—
35 (“Oh, that I had someone to hear me!(BP)
I sign now my defense—let the Almighty answer me;
let my accuser(BQ) put his indictment in writing.
36 Surely I would wear it on my shoulder,(BR)
