30 “But now men who are younger than I make fun of me.
I would not have even let their fathers
    sit with my sheep dogs.
Their hands had no strength to help me.
    They had even lost their strength to work.
They were thin from being hungry and in need.
    They wandered through the dry and ruined land at night.
They gathered desert plants by the brush for food.
    They even ate the root of the broom tree.
They were forced to live away from other people.
    People shouted at them as if they were thieves.
These young men had to live in dried up streambeds.
    They lived in caves and among the rocks.
They howled like animals out among the bushes.
    And they huddled together in the brush.
They are worthless people without names.
    They were forced to leave the land.

“Now they make fun of me with songs.
    My name has become a joke among them.
10 They hate me and stay far away from me.
    But they do not mind spitting in my face.
11 God has taken away my strength and made me suffer.
    So they attack me with all their anger.
12 On my right side they attack me like a mob.
    They lay traps for my feet.
    They prepare to attack me.
13 They break up my road.
    They work to destroy me
    without anyone stopping them.
14 They go forward as if through a hole in the wall.
    They roll in among the ruins.
15 Great fears overwhelm me.
    They blow my honor away as if by a great wind.
    My safety disappears like a cloud.

16 “Now my life is almost over.
    My days are full of suffering.
17 At night my bones ache.
    Gnawing pains never stop.
18 In his great power God grabs hold of my clothing.
    He chokes me with the collar of my coat.
19 He throws me into the mud.
    And I become like dirt and ashes.

20 “I cry out to you, God, but you do not answer.
    I stand up, but you just look at me.
21 You turn on me without mercy.
    You attack me with your powerful hand.
22 You snatch me up and throw me into the wind.
    You toss me about in the storm.
23 I know you will bring me down to death.
    You will bring me to the place where all living people must go.

24 “Surely no one would hurt a ruined man
    when he cries for help in his time of trouble.
25 I have cried for those who are in trouble.
    My soul has been very sad for poor people.
26 But when I hoped for good, only evil came to me.
    When I looked for light, darkness came.
27 I never stop being upset inside.
    Days of suffering are ahead of me.
28 I have become black, but not by the sun.
    I stand up in public and cry for help.
29 It is as if I have become a brother to wild dogs
    and a friend to ostriches.
30 My skin becomes black and peels off.
    My body burns with fever.
31 My harp is tuned for singing a sad song.
    And my flute is tuned for the sound of loud crying.

30 “But now they (A)laugh at me,
    men who are (B)younger than I,
whose fathers I would have disdained
    to set with the dogs of my flock.
What could I gain from the strength of their hands,
    (C)men whose (D)vigor is gone?
Through want and hard hunger
    they (E)gnaw (F)the dry ground by night in (G)waste and desolation;
they pick saltwort and the leaves of bushes,
    and the roots of the broom tree for their food.[a]
(H)They are driven out from human company;
    they shout after them as after a thief.
In the gullies of the torrents they must dwell,
    in holes of the earth and of (I)the rocks.
Among the bushes they (J)bray;
    under (K)the nettles they huddle together.
A senseless, a nameless brood,
    they have been whipped out of the land.

“And now I have become their (L)song;
    I am (M)a byword to them.
10 They (N)abhor me; they keep aloof from me;
    they do not hesitate to (O)spit at the sight of me.
11 Because God has loosed my cord and humbled me,
    they have cast off restraint[b] in my presence.
12 On my (P)right hand the rabble rise;
    they push away my feet;
    they (Q)cast up against me their ways of destruction.
13 They break up my path;
    they promote my (R)calamity;
    they need no one to help them.
14 As through a wide (S)breach they come;
    amid the crash they roll on.
15 (T)Terrors are turned upon me;
    my honor is pursued as by the wind,
    and my prosperity has passed away like (U)a cloud.

16 “And now my soul is (V)poured out within me;
    days of affliction have taken hold of me.
17 (W)The night (X)racks my bones,
    and the pain that (Y)gnaws me takes no rest.
18 With great force my garment is (Z)disfigured;
    it binds me about like the collar of my tunic.
19 God[c] has cast me into the mire,
    and I have become like (AA)dust and ashes.
20 I cry to you for help and you do not answer me;
    I stand, and you only look at me.
21 You have (AB)turned cruel to me;
    with the might of your hand you (AC)persecute me.
22 (AD)You lift me up on the wind; you make me ride on it,
    and you toss me about in the roar of the storm.
23 (AE)For I know that you will bring me to death
    and to the house appointed for (AF)all living.

24 “Yet does not one in a (AG)heap of ruins stretch out his hand,
    and in his disaster cry for help?[d]
25 Did not I (AH)weep for him whose day was hard?
    Was not my soul grieved for the needy?
26 But (AI)when I hoped for good, evil came,
    and when I waited for light, (AJ)darkness came.
27 My inward parts are in turmoil and never still;
    days of affliction (AK)come to meet me.
28 I (AL)go about darkened, but not by the sun;
    I stand up in (AM)the assembly and cry for help.
29 I am a brother of (AN)jackals
    and a companion of (AO)ostriches.
30 My (AP)skin turns black and falls from me,
    and my (AQ)bones burn with heat.
31 My (AR)lyre is (AS)turned to mourning,
    and my (AT)pipe to the voice of those who weep.

30 ‘But now it is different.
Men who are younger than I am laugh at me.
I would not even trust their fathers
    to take care of my sheep.
The work that those old men could do was no help to me.
    They no longer were strong.
They were weak and thin because they were hungry.
    They had to look for food in the desert at night.
    They found roots to eat in dry places.
They pulled up plants in the desert
    as their food.
They burned the roots of bushes
    to keep themselves warm.
People chased them away from their towns,
    as if they were shouting at robbers.
They had to live in dry valleys,
    among the rocks, or in caves.
They cried aloud like animals among the bushes.
    They hid together under the thorn bushes.
They were foolish people that nobody respected.
    People chased them away from their land.

But now their sons sing songs that insult me.
    They tell jokes about me.[b]
10 They hate me
    and they do not come near me.
When they see me,
    they spit at my face.
11 God has made me weak and helpless.
    People do to me anything that they want to do.
12 From one side, the crowd attacks me.
    They make me run away.
They are like an army that builds a road
    to come and attack me.
13 They stop me from escaping.
    They are ready to destroy me.
    They do not need anyone to help them.
14 I cannot stop them when they attack me.
    They rush forward to knock me down.
15 So I am always afraid.
My honour has disappeared
    as if a strong wind has blown it away.
My riches have also gone,
    like a cloud that passes across the sky.

16 Now I know that my life will soon end.
    Every day I continue to suffer.
17 At night, my bones are painful.
    The pain is always there in my body.
18 God has used his power to take hold of me.
    He has held my shirt around my neck.
19 He has thrown me down into the mud.
    I am no better than dust and ashes on the ground.
20 I call aloud to you, God,
    but you do not answer me.
When I stand to pray,
    you only look at me.
21 You have become cruel to me.
    You have used your strength to attack me.
22 You take hold of me and you carry me away,
    like a strong wind that blows.
You use a storm to destroy me.
23 I know that you are already taking me to my death.
    Everyone who lives has to go to that place.

24 When someone is weak and in trouble,
    people do not usually try to hurt him.
When someone calls aloud for help,
    they do not refuse to help him.
25 When other people were in trouble,
    I wept for them.
When I saw poor people
    it made me very upset.
26 But when I hoped for good things to happen,
    trouble came instead.
When I looked for light to shine on me,
    everything became dark.
27 I hurt inside me all the time.
    Every day I suffer from pain.
28 Illness has caused my skin to become black.
    It is not the sun that has made that happen.
I stand up in the public meeting place
    and I call aloud for help.
29 I have become like the jackals and the ostriches.
    My sad voice sounds like them.
30 My skin has become black,
    and bits of skin fall off.
    My body is hot with fever.[c]
31 Now, when I make music with my harp,
    I only sing funeral songs.
When I make music with my flute,
    I do it for people who are weeping.’
