Job recuerda días felices
29 Y reanudó Job su discurso, y dijo(A):
2 «¡Quién me diera volver a ser como en meses pasados,
Como en los días en que Dios velaba sobre mí(B);
3 Cuando Su lámpara resplandecía(C) sobre mi cabeza,
Y a Su luz caminaba yo en las tinieblas(D);
4 Como era yo en los días de mi juventud[a],
Cuando el favor[b] de Dios(E) estaba sobre mi tienda;
5 Cuando el Todopoderoso[c] estaba aún conmigo,
Y mis hijos en derredor mío;
6 Cuando en leche[d](F) se bañaban mis pies[e],
Y la roca me derramaba ríos de aceite(G)!
7 -»Cuando yo salía a la puerta(H) de la ciudad,
Cuando en la plaza tomaba mi asiento,
8 Me veían los jóvenes y se escondían,
Y los ancianos se levantaban y permanecían en pie.
9 -»Los príncipes dejaban de hablar(I)
Y ponían la mano[f] sobre su boca(J);
10 La voz de los nobles se apagaba[g](K),
Y la lengua se les pegaba al paladar(L).
11 -»Porque el oído que oía me llamaba bienaventurado,
Y el ojo que veía daba testimonio de mí(M);
12 Porque yo libraba al pobre que clamaba(N),
Y al huérfano(O) que no tenía quien lo ayudara.
13 -»Venía sobre mí la bendición del que estaba a punto de perecer(P),
Y el corazón de la viuda(Q) yo llenaba de gozo.
14 -»De justicia me vestía, y ella me cubría;
Como manto y turbante era mi derecho(R).
15 -»Ojos era yo(S) para el ciego,
Y pies para el cojo.
16 -»Padre era para los necesitados,
Y examinaba la causa que no conocía(T).
17 -»Quebraba los colmillos del impío(U),
Y de sus dientes arrancaba la presa.
18 -»Entonces pensaba[h]: “En[i] mi nido moriré,
Y multiplicaré mis días como la arena.
19 -”Mi raíz se extiende hacia las aguas(V),
Y el rocío(W) se posa de noche en mi rama.
20 -”Conmigo siempre es nueva mi gloria,
Y mi arco(X) en mi mano se renueva”.
21 ¶»Me escuchaban y esperaban,
Y guardaban silencio para oír mi consejo(Y).
22 -»Después de mis palabras no hablaban de nuevo(Z),
Y sobre ellos caía gota a gota mi discurso(AA).
23 -»Me esperaban como a la lluvia,
Y abrían su boca como a lluvia de primavera[j].
24 -»Yo les sonreía cuando ellos no creían,
Y no abatían la luz de mi rostro.
25 -»Les escogía el camino y me sentaba como jefe(AB),
Y moraba como rey entre las tropas,
Como el que consuela a los que lloran(AC).

Dios Habla Hoy
Job
29 ¡Ojalá pudiera yo volver a aquellos tiempos
en que Dios me protegía!
3 Cuando él me iluminaba con su luz
y yo podía andar en la oscuridad;
4 cuando yo estaba en plena madurez
y Dios cuidaba de mi hogar;
5 cuando el Todopoderoso estaba a mi lado
y mis hijos me hacían compañía;
6 cuando la leche corría por el suelo
y el aceite brotaba de las rocas;
7 cuando yo tomaba asiento
en el lugar de reunión de la ciudad.
8 Los jóvenes, al verme, se hacían a un lado
y los ancianos se ponían de pie.
9 Aun los hombres importantes dejaban de hablar
y hacían señas de guardar silencio.
10 Los gobernantes bajaban la voz;
se les pegaba la lengua al paladar.
11 La gente, al verme o escucharme,
me felicitaba y hablaba bien de mí,
12 pues yo socorría al huérfano y al pobre,
gente a la que nadie ayudaba.
13 El que estaba en la ruina me daba las gracias;
mi ayuda era a las viudas motivo de alegría.
14 La justicia y la honradez eran parte de mí mismo:
eran mi ropa de todos los días.
15 ¡Yo era ojos para el ciego
y pies para el lisiado,
16 padre de los necesitados
y defensor de los extranjeros!
17 Yo les rompía la quijada a los malvados
y les quitaba la presa de los dientes.
18 Yo pensaba: «Mis días serán tantos como la arena;
moriré anciano y en mi propio hogar.
19 Soy como un árbol plantado junto al agua,
cuyas ramas baña el rocío de la noche.
20 Mi esplendor se renovará conmigo,
y no me faltarán las fuerzas.»
21 Todos me escuchaban
y esperaban en silencio mis consejos.
22 Después de hablar yo, ninguno replicaba.
Mis palabras caían gota a gota sobre ellos,
23 y ellos las esperaban ansiosos,
como se espera la lluvia en tiempo de calor.
24 Cuando yo les sonreía, apenas lo creían,
y no dejaban de mirar mi rostro alegre.
25 Yo establecía mi autoridad sobre ellos
y decidía lo que ellos debían hacer,
como un rey al frente de sus tropas.
Cuando estaban tristes, yo los consolaba.

29 Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,
2 Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;
3 When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;
4 As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;
5 When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;
6 When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;
7 When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!
8 The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up.
9 The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth.
10 The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.
11 When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:
12 Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.
13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.
15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.
16 I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.
17 And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.
18 Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.
19 My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.
20 My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand.
21 Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.
22 After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
23 And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
24 If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.
25 I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.

Job’s Summary Defense
29 Job further continued his discourse, and said:
2 “Oh, that I were as in months (A)past,
As in the days when God (B)watched over me;
3 (C)When His lamp shone upon my head,
And when by His light I walked through darkness;
4 Just as I was in the days of my prime,
When (D)the friendly counsel of God was over my tent;
5 When the Almighty was yet with me,
When my children were around me;
6 When (E)my steps were bathed with [a]cream,
And (F)the rock poured out rivers of oil for me!
7 “When I went out to the gate by the city,
When I took my seat in the open square,
8 The young men saw me and hid,
And the aged arose and stood;
9 The princes refrained from talking,
And (G)put their hand on their mouth;
10 The voice of nobles was hushed,
And their (H)tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth.
11 When the ear heard, then it blessed me,
And when the eye saw, then it approved me;
12 Because (I)I delivered the poor who cried out,
The fatherless and the one who had no helper.
13 The blessing of a perishing man came upon me,
And I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.
14 (J)I put on righteousness, and it clothed me;
My justice was like a robe and a turban.
15 I was (K)eyes to the blind,
And I was feet to the lame.
16 I was a father to the poor,
And (L)I searched out the case that I did not know.
17 I broke (M)the fangs of the wicked,
And plucked the victim from his teeth.
18 “Then I said, (N)‘I shall die in my nest,
And multiply my days as the sand.
19 (O)My root is spread out (P)to the waters,
And the dew lies all night on my branch.
20 My glory is fresh within me,
And my (Q)bow is renewed in my hand.’
21 “Men listened to me and waited,
And kept silence for my counsel.
22 After my words they did not speak again,
And my speech settled on them as dew.
23 They waited for me as for the rain,
And they opened their mouth wide as for (R)the spring rain.
24 If I mocked at them, they did not believe it,
And the light of my countenance they did not cast down.
25 I chose the way for them, and sat as chief;
So I dwelt as a king in the army,
As one who comforts mourners.
