28 Människan vet hur man bryter silver och renar guld,
2 hur man gräver fram järn ur jorden och smälter koppar ur malm.
3-4 Hon vet hur man tänder ljus, så att gruvschakt kan sprängas och malm brytas i jordens djup. Där nere i djupet, långt från hemmets trygghet, gräver hon sig fram och svingar sig över avgrunden i rep.
5 Den jord som ger växt och föda är i sitt inre som omvälvd av eld.
6 Safirer gömmer sig i berget och guldklimpar i gruset,
7 skatter som ingen fågel kan se och inget falköga upptäcka.
8 Inget rovdjur har någonsin trampat på dessa rikedomar och inget lejon varit i deras närhet.
9 Men människan kan spräcka den hårda klippan och borra sig ner i djupen.
10 Hon spränger tunnlar in i bergen och avslöjar dyrbara skatter.
11 Hon dämmer upp vattenströmmar och vaskar fram guld.
12 Men trots att människan kan frilägga dessa skatter, vet hon inte var visheten gömmer sig.
13 Hon inser inte dess oskattbara värde och förstår inte att den inte kan sökas bland människor.
14 'Här finns den inte
15 Visheten kan inte köpas för silver eller guld,
16 inte för guld från Ofir eller för dyrbar onyx eller safir.
17 Den är värdefullare än juveler infattade i guld.
18 Korall och kristall kan inte nämnas som jämförelse. Den är mer värd än rubiner.
19 Topas från Etiopien kan inte betala den och inte heller det allra renaste guld.
20 Var kan vi då få tag i visheten? Var finns förmågan att förstå?
21 Den är gömd för allt levande, inte ens den mest skarpögda fågel i skyn kan upptäcka den.
22 Döden och dödsriket har hört ryktas om den.
23-24 Bara Gud vet var den finns, och bara han kan visa vägen. Han kan se hela jorden och allt under himlen.
25 Han får vinden att blåsa, och han sätter gränser för havet.
26 Han ger regnet dess lagar och visar blixten dess väg.
27 Han vet var visheten finns. Han har granskat den och noga utforskat den.
28 Och han säger till människan: 'Lyssna! Att frukta Herren är sann vishet, och att fly det onda är sant förstånd.'

28 Silvret har ju sin gruva, sin fyndort har guldet, som man renar;
2 järn hämtas upp ur jorden, och stenar smältas till koppar.
3 Man sätter då gränser för mörkret, och rannsakar ned till yttersta djupet,
4 Där spränger man schakt långt under markens bebyggare, där färdas man förgäten djupt under vandrarens fot, där hänger man svävande, fjärran ifrån människor.
5 Ovan ur jorden uppväxer bröd, men därnere omvälves den såsom av eld.
6 Där, bland dess stenar, har safiren sitt fäste, guldmalm hämtar man ock där.
7 Stigen ditned är ej känd av örnen, och falkens öga har ej utspanat den;
8 den har ej blivit trampad av stolta vilddjur, intet lejon har gått därfram.
9 Ja, där bär man hand på hårda stenen; bergen omvälvas ända ifrån rötterna.
10 In i klipporna bryter man sig gångar, där ögat får se allt vad härligt är.
11 Vattenådror täppas till och hindras att gråta. Så dragas dolda skatter fram i ljuset.
12 Men visheten, var finnes hon, och var har förståndet sin boning?
13 Priset för henne känner ingen människa; hon står ej att finna i de levandes land.
14 Djupet säger: »Hon är icke här», och havet säger: »Hos mig är hon icke.»
15 Hon köper icke för ädlaste metall, med silver gäldas ej hennes värde.
16 Hon väges icke upp med guld från Ofir, ej med dyrbar onyx och safir.
17 Guld och glas kunna ej liknas vid henne; hon får ej i byte mot gyllene klenoder.
18 Koraller och kristall må icke ens nämnas; svårare är förvärva vishet än pärlor.
19 Etiopisk topas kan ej liknas vid henne; hon väges icke upp med renaste guld.
20 Ja, visheten, varifrån kommer väl hon, och var har förståndet sin boning?
21 Förborgad är hon för alla levandes ögon, för himmelens fåglar är hon fördold;
22 avgrunden och döden giva till känna; »Blott hörsägner om henne förnummo våra öron.»
23 Gud, han är den som känner vägen till henne, han är den som vet var hon har sin boning.
24 Ty han förmår skåda till jordens ändar, allt vad som finnes under himmelen ser han.
25 När han mätte ut åt vinden dess styrka och avvägde vattnen efter mått,
26 när han stadgade en lag för regnet och en väg för tordönets stråle,
27 då såg han och uppenbarade henne, då lät han henne stå fram, då utforskade han henne.
28 Och till människorna sade han så: »Se Herrens fruktan, det är vishet, och att fly det onda är förstånd.»

28 There is a mine for silver
and a place where gold is refined.(A)
2 Iron is taken from the earth,
and copper is smelted from ore.(B)
3 Mortals put an end to the darkness;(C)
they search out the farthest recesses
for ore in the blackest darkness.(D)
4 Far from human dwellings they cut a shaft,(E)
in places untouched by human feet;
far from other people they dangle and sway.
5 The earth, from which food comes,(F)
is transformed below as by fire;
6 lapis lazuli(G) comes from its rocks,
and its dust contains nuggets of gold.(H)
7 No bird of prey knows that hidden path,
no falcon’s eye has seen it.(I)
8 Proud beasts(J) do not set foot on it,
and no lion prowls there.(K)
9 People assault the flinty rock(L) with their hands
and lay bare the roots of the mountains.(M)
10 They tunnel through the rock;(N)
their eyes see all its treasures.(O)
11 They search[a] the sources of the rivers(P)
and bring hidden things(Q) to light.
12 But where can wisdom be found?(R)

15 It cannot be bought with the finest gold,
nor can its price be weighed out in silver.(X)

17 Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it,(AA)
nor can it be had for jewels of gold.(AB)
18 Coral(AC) and jasper(AD) are not worthy of mention;
the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.(AE)
19 The topaz(AF) of Cush(AG) cannot compare with it;
it cannot be bought with pure gold.(AH)
20 Where then does wisdom come from?

21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing,
concealed even from the birds in the sky.(AJ)

“Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.”
23 God understands the way to it

24 for he views the ends of the earth(AO)

25 When he established the force of the wind

26 when he made a decree for the rain(AR)

28 Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it.
2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone.
3 He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.
4 The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men.
5 As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire.
6 The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold.
7 There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture's eye hath not seen:
8 The lion's whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.
9 He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots.
10 He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.
11 He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light.
12 But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
13 Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
14 The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.
15 It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.
16 It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
17 The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
18 No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.
19 The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
21 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
22 Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.
23 God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.
24 For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;
25 To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.
26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
27 Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

28 “Surely there is a mine for silver,
And a place where gold is refined.

3 Man puts an end to darkness,
And searches every recess
For ore in the darkness and the shadow of death.
4 He breaks open a shaft away from people;
In places forgotten by feet
They hang far away from men;
They swing to and fro.
5 As for the earth, from it comes bread,
But underneath it is turned up as by fire;
6 Its stones are the source of sapphires,
And it contains gold dust.
7 That path no bird knows,
Nor has the falcon’s eye seen it.
8 The [b]proud lions have not trodden it,
Nor has the fierce lion passed over it.
9 He puts his hand on the flint;

10 He cuts out channels in the rocks,
