Dios Habla Hoy
28 Hay minas de donde se saca la plata
y lugares donde se refina el oro.
2 El hierro se saca de la tierra,
y las piedras, al fundirse, producen el cobre.
3 El hombre ha puesto fin a las tinieblas:
baja a los lugares más profundos
y allí, en la oscuridad, busca piedras.
4 Balanceándose suspendidos de una soga,
abren minas en lugares solitarios,
en lugares por donde nadie pasa,
lejos de las ciudades.
5 La tierra, por encima, produce trigo,
y por debajo está revuelta como por fuego.
6 Allí se encuentran zafiros,
y oro mezclado con tierra.
7 Ni los halcones ni otras aves de rapiña
han visto jamás esos senderos.
8 Las fieras no pasan por ellos
ni los frecuentan los leones.
9 El hombre pone la mano en el pedernal
y arranca de raíz las montañas.
10 Abre túneles en los peñascos
y descubre toda clase de tesoros.
11 Explora los nacimientos de los ríos
y saca a la luz cosas escondidas.
12 ¿Pero de dónde viene la sabiduría?
¿En qué lugar está la inteligencia?
13 El hombre no sabe lo que ella vale,
ni la encuentra en este mundo.
14 El océano dice: «Aquí no está»,
y el mar: «Yo no la tengo.»
15 No se puede conseguir con oro,
ni se puede comprar con plata.
16 No se puede pagar con el oro más precioso,
ni con joyas de cornalina o de zafiro.
17 Vale más que el oro y el cristal;
no se puede cambiar por objetos de oro puro.
18 La sabiduría es más preciosa que el coral,
y que el cristal de roca y las perlas.
19 El crisólito de Etiopía no la iguala,
ni se puede pagar con el oro más fino.
20 ¿De dónde, pues, viene la sabiduría?
¿En qué lugar está la inteligencia?
21 Está escondida a la vista de las fieras,
oculta a las aves del cielo.
22 Aun la destrucción y la muerte dicen:
«Sólo de oídas hemos sabido de ella.»
23 Pero Dios conoce el camino de la sabiduría;
sólo él sabe dónde encontrarla,
24 pues él ve hasta el último rincón de la tierra
y todo lo que hay debajo del cielo.
25 Cuando Dios le fijó la fuerza al viento
y puso un límite al agua,
26 cuando estableció las leyes de la lluvia
y señaló el camino a la tormenta,
27 también vio a la sabiduría, vio su justo valor,
la examinó y le dio su aprobación.
28 Y dijo Dios a los hombres:
«Servir fielmente al Señor: eso es sabiduría;
apartarse del mal: eso es inteligencia.»

28 Ciertamente la plata tiene sus veneros,
Y el oro lugar donde se refina.
2 El hierro se saca del polvo,
Y de la piedra se funde el cobre.
3 A las tinieblas ponen término,
Y examinan todo a la perfección,
Las piedras que hay en oscuridad y en sombra de muerte.
4 Abren minas lejos de lo habitado,
En lugares olvidados, donde el pie no pasa.
Son suspendidos y balanceados, lejos de los demás hombres.
5 De la tierra nace el pan,
Y debajo de ella está como convertida en fuego.
6 Lugar hay cuyas piedras son zafiro,
Y sus polvos de oro.
7 Senda que nunca la conoció ave,
Ni ojo de buitre la vio;
8 Nunca la pisaron animales fieros,
Ni león pasó por ella.
9 En el pedernal puso su mano,
Y trastornó de raíz los montes.
10 De los peñascos cortó ríos,
Y sus ojos vieron todo lo preciado.
11 Detuvo los ríos en su nacimiento,
E hizo salir a luz lo escondido.
12 Mas ¿dónde se hallará la sabiduría?
¿Dónde está el lugar de la inteligencia?
13 No conoce su valor el hombre,
Ni se halla en la tierra de los vivientes.
14 El abismo dice: No está en mí;
Y el mar dijo: Ni conmigo.
15 No se dará por oro,
Ni su precio será a peso de plata.
16 No puede ser apreciada con oro de Ofir,
Ni con ónice precioso, ni con zafiro.
17 El oro no se le igualará, ni el diamante,
Ni se cambiará por alhajas de oro fino.
18 No se hará mención de coral ni de perlas;
La sabiduría es mejor que las piedras preciosas.
19 No se igualará con ella topacio de Etiopía;
No se podrá apreciar con oro fino.
20 ¿De dónde, pues, vendrá la sabiduría?
¿Y dónde está el lugar de la inteligencia?
21 Porque encubierta está a los ojos de todo viviente,
Y a toda ave del cielo es oculta.
22 El Abadón y la muerte dijeron:
Su fama hemos oído con nuestros oídos.
23 Dios entiende el camino de ella,
Y conoce su lugar.
24 Porque él mira hasta los fines de la tierra,
Y ve cuanto hay bajo los cielos.
25 Al dar peso al viento,
Y poner las aguas por medida;
26 Cuando él dio ley a la lluvia,
Y camino al relámpago de los truenos,
27 Entonces la veía él, y la manifestaba;
La preparó y la descubrió también.
28 Y dijo al hombre:
He aquí que el temor del Señor es la sabiduría,(A)
Y el apartarse del mal, la inteligencia.

28 “Surely there is a mine for silver,
And a place where they refine gold.

“Iron is taken out of the earth,
And copper is smelted from the stone ore.
3
“Man puts an end to darkness [by bringing in a light],
And to the farthest bounds he searches out
The rock buried in gloom and deep shadow.
4
“He breaks open (mine) shafts far away from where people live,
[In places] forgotten by the [human] foot;
They dangle [in the mines] and hang away from men.
5
“[As for] the earth, out of it comes food,
But underneath [its surface, down deep] it is turned over as fire.
6
“Its stones are the bed of sapphires;
It holds dust of gold.
7
“The path [deep within] no bird of prey knows,
And the falcon’s eye has not caught sight of it.
8
“The proud beasts [and their young] have not walked on it,
Nor has the fierce lion passed over it.
9
“Man puts his hand on [and tears apart] the flinty rock;
He overturns the mountains at the base [looking for treasure].
10
“He cuts out channels and passages among the rocks;
And his eye sees every precious thing.
11
“Man dams up the streams from flowing [so that they do not trickle into the mine],
And what is hidden he brings out to the light.
The Search for Wisdom Is Harder

“But where can wisdom be found?
And where is the place of understanding?
13
“Man does not know the value of it;
Nor is it found in the land of the living.
14
“The deep says, ‘It is not in me’;
And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’
15
“It cannot be obtained for pure gold,
Nor can silver be weighed as its price.
16
“It cannot be valued in [terms of] the gold of Ophir,
In the precious onyx or beryl, or the sapphire.
17
“Gold and glass cannot equal wisdom,
Nor can it be exchanged for articles of fine gold.
18
“No mention of coral and crystal can be made;
For the possession of wisdom is even above [that of] rubies or pearls.
19
“The topaz of Ethiopia cannot compare with it,
Nor can it be valued in pure gold.
20
“From where then does wisdom come?
And where is the place of understanding?
21
“It is hidden from the eyes of all the living
And concealed from the birds of the heavens.
22
“Abaddon (the place of destruction) and Death say,
‘We have [only] heard a report of it with our ears.’
23
“God understands the way [to wisdom]
And He knows its place [for wisdom is with God alone].
24
“For He looks to the ends of the earth
And sees everything under the heavens.
25
“When He gave weight and pressure to the wind
And allotted the waters by measure,
26
When He made a limit for the rain
And a way for the thunderbolt,
27
Then He saw wisdom and declared it;
He established it and searched it out.
28
“But to man He said, ‘Behold, the reverential and worshipful fear of the Lord—that is wisdom;
And to depart from evil is understanding.’”

28 There is a mine for silver
and a place where gold is refined.(A)
2 Iron is taken from the earth,
and copper is smelted from ore.(B)
3 Mortals put an end to the darkness;(C)
they search out the farthest recesses
for ore in the blackest darkness.(D)
4 Far from human dwellings they cut a shaft,(E)
in places untouched by human feet;
far from other people they dangle and sway.
5 The earth, from which food comes,(F)
is transformed below as by fire;
6 lapis lazuli(G) comes from its rocks,
and its dust contains nuggets of gold.(H)
7 No bird of prey knows that hidden path,
no falcon’s eye has seen it.(I)
8 Proud beasts(J) do not set foot on it,
and no lion prowls there.(K)
9 People assault the flinty rock(L) with their hands
and lay bare the roots of the mountains.(M)
10 They tunnel through the rock;(N)
their eyes see all its treasures.(O)
11 They search[a] the sources of the rivers(P)
and bring hidden things(Q) to light.
12 But where can wisdom be found?(R)
Where does understanding dwell?(S)
13 No mortal comprehends its worth;(T)
it cannot be found in the land of the living.(U)
14 The deep(V) says, “It is not in me”;
the sea(W) says, “It is not with me.”
15 It cannot be bought with the finest gold,
nor can its price be weighed out in silver.(X)
16 It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir,(Y)
with precious onyx or lapis lazuli.(Z)
17 Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it,(AA)
nor can it be had for jewels of gold.(AB)
18 Coral(AC) and jasper(AD) are not worthy of mention;
the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.(AE)
19 The topaz(AF) of Cush(AG) cannot compare with it;
it cannot be bought with pure gold.(AH)
20 Where then does wisdom come from?
Where does understanding dwell?(AI)
21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing,
concealed even from the birds in the sky.(AJ)
22 Destruction[b](AK) and Death(AL) say,
“Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.”
23 God understands the way to it
and he alone(AM) knows where it dwells,(AN)
24 for he views the ends of the earth(AO)
and sees everything under the heavens.(AP)
25 When he established the force of the wind
and measured out the waters,(AQ)
26 when he made a decree for the rain(AR)
and a path for the thunderstorm,(AS)
27 then he looked at wisdom and appraised it;
he confirmed it and tested it.(AT)
28 And he said to the human race,
“The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom,
and to shun evil(AU) is understanding.”(AV)
