A Hymn to Wisdom
28 Surely there is a mine for silver
and a place where gold is refined.
2 Iron is taken from the ground,
and copper is smelted from ore.
3 A miner puts an end to the darkness;
he probes[a] the deepest recesses
for ore in the gloomy darkness.
4 He cuts a shaft far from human habitation,
in places unknown to those who walk above ground.
Suspended far away from people,
the miners swing back and forth.
5 Food may come from the earth,
but below the surface the earth is transformed as by fire.
6 Its rocks are a source of lapis lazuli,(A)
containing flecks of gold.
7 No bird of prey knows that path;
no falcon’s eye has seen it.
8 Proud beasts have never walked on it;
no lion has ever prowled over it.
9 The miner uses a flint tool
and turns up ore from the root of the mountains.
10 He cuts out channels in the rocks,
and his eyes spot every treasure.
11 He dams up the streams from flowing[b]
so that he may bring to light what is hidden.
12 But where can wisdom(B) be found,
and where is understanding located?
13 No one can know its value,[c]
since it cannot be found in the land of the living.
14 The ocean depths say, “It’s not in me,”
while the sea declares, “I don’t have it.”(C)
15 Gold cannot be exchanged for it,
and silver cannot be weighed out for its price.
16 Wisdom cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir,(D)
in precious onyx or lapis lazuli.(E)
17 Gold and glass do not compare with it,
and articles of fine gold cannot be exchanged for it.(F)
18 Coral and quartz are not worth mentioning.
The price of wisdom is beyond pearls.
19 Topaz from Cush cannot compare with it,
and it cannot be valued in pure gold.
20 Where then does wisdom come from,
and where is understanding located?
21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing
and concealed from the birds of the sky.
22 Abaddon and Death(G) say,
“We have heard news of it with our ears.”
23 But God understands the way to wisdom,
and he knows its location.
24 For he looks to the ends of the earth
and sees everything under the heavens.
25 When God fixed the weight of the wind
and distributed the water by measure,(H)
26 when he established a limit[d] for the rain(I)
and a path for the lightning,
27 he considered wisdom and evaluated it;
he established it and examined it.
28 He said to mankind,
“The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom.
And to turn from evil is understanding.”(J)

Sag mir, wo die Weisheit ist!
28 »Es gibt Minen, wo man nach Silber gräbt,
wir kennen die Stellen, wo das Gold gewaschen wird.
2 Eisenerz holt man aus der Erde,
und Kupfer wird aus Gestein geschmolzen.
3 Der Mensch erforscht auch die tiefste Dunkelheit;
er untersucht das Gestein und dringt dabei immer weiter vor
bis ins Innerste der Erde.
4 Fern von jeder menschlichen Siedlung gräbt er einen Schacht,
an Orten, wo kein Mensch den Fuß hinsetzt;
die Bergleute lassen sich an Stricken hinunter
und schweben ohne jeden Halt.
5 Oben auf der Erde wächst das Getreide,
doch tief unten wird sie umgewühlt,
als wütete ein Feuer.
6 Ihr Gestein birgt den Saphir,
auch Goldstaub ist darin.
7 Den Weg zu den Fundorten hat kein Geier erspäht,
nicht einmal das scharfe Auge eines Falken.
8 Kein wildes Tier hat diesen Pfad betreten,
kein Löwe ist auf ihm geschritten.
9 Doch der Mensch –
er arbeitet sich durch das härteste Gestein,
ganze Berge wühlt er um.
10 Tief in den Felsen treibt er Stollen,
bis er dort findet, was sein Herz begehrt.
11 Die Wasseradern im Gestein dichtet er ab;
tief Verborgenes bringt er ans Licht.
12 Aber die Weisheit – wo ist sie zu finden?
Und wo entdeckt man die Einsicht?
13 Kein Mensch kennt den Weg zu ihr,[a]
unter den Lebenden findet man sie nicht.
14 Das Meer und seine Tiefen sprechen:
›Die Weisheit ist nicht bei uns!‹
15 Sie ist unbezahlbar, mit Gold und Silber nicht aufzuwiegen.
16 Man kann sie weder mit Feingold kaufen
noch mit kostbarem Onyx oder Saphir.
17 Gold und reines Glas reichen nicht an sie heran,
und auch gegen Goldschmuck kann man sie nicht tauschen,
18 ganz zu schweigen von Korallen und Kristall!
Ja, der Wert der Weisheit übertrifft alle Rubine.
19 Der Topas aus Äthiopien ist nichts
im Vergleich zu ihr,
mit reinem Gold ist sie nicht aufzuwiegen.
20 Woher also kommt die Weisheit?
Und wo entdeckt man die Einsicht?
21 Ja, sie ist dem menschlichen Auge verborgen,
und auch die Raubvögel erspähen sie nicht.
22 Das tiefe Totenreich und selbst der Tod,
sie sprechen: ›Wir haben von ihr nur ein Gerücht gehört!‹
23 Gott allein kennt den Weg zur Weisheit;
er nur weiß, wo sie zu finden ist.
24 Denn er blickt über die ganze Welt,
er durchschaut Himmel und Erde.
25 Schon damals, als er dem Wind seine Wucht gab
und den Wassermassen eine Grenze setzte;
26 als er bestimmte, wo der Regen niedergehen sollte,
als er den Gewitterwolken einen Weg vorschrieb –
27 schon da sah er die Weisheit an
und rühmte ihren Wert,
er erforschte sie und gab ihr Bestand.
28 Und zum Menschen sprach er:
›Weise ist, wer Ehrfurcht vor mir hat,
und Einsicht besitzt, wer sich vom Bösen abkehrt.‹«

28 Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it.
2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone.
3 He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.
4 The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men.
5 As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire.
6 The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold.
7 There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture's eye hath not seen:
8 The lion's whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.
9 He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots.
10 He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.
11 He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light.
12 But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
13 Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
14 The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.
15 It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.
16 It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
17 The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
18 No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.
19 The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
21 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
22 Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.
23 God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.
24 For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;
25 To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.
26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
27 Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
