Menneskets viden og materielle ressourcer
28 Guld og sølv finder man i jorden,
og mennesker forstår at rense det for urenheder.
2 Malm hentes op fra jordens dybder,
man smelter det og frembringer jern og kobber.
3 Folk udforsker jordens indre,
de leder med lys og lygte
for at nå frem til den dyrebare malm.
4 Fjernt fra alle byer og alfarvej
graver de dybe skakter i jorden
og svinger frem og tilbage i rebene.
5 På jordens overflade dyrker man korn,
mens man uddrager skatte fra dens indre.
6 Mennesker har lært at finde ædelsten
og udvinde guldstøv fra klippegrunden,
7 skatte, som er skjult selv for falkens blik,
gemt væk udenfor rovfuglenes rækkevidde.
8 De findes på steder, hvor ingen rovdyr kommer,
hvor selv dyrenes konge aldrig sætter sin fod.
9 Mennesker hugger sig vej gennem klipper af flint
og underminerer et bjerg, så det falder.
10 I klipperne hugger man gange
og finder mange slags kostbarheder.
11 Mennesker udforsker de underjordiske kilder
og bringer skjulte skatte frem i lyset.
Visdommen er sværere at finde
12 Men hvor finder mennesker visdom?
Hvor går man hen og graver klogskab frem?
13 Ingen kender vejen til visdommens kilde,
for den findes ikke i de levendes land.
14 Afgrunden hvisker: ‚Den er ikke her!’
Havdybet bruser: ‚Heller ikke hos mig!’
15 Visdom kan ej købes for det fineste guld,
dens værdi kan ikke afvejes i sølv.
16 Den kan ikke betales med guld fra Ofir,
med de dyreste smykkesten eller safirer.
17 Man kan ikke bytte sig til den for skåle af guld
eller for det fineste krystal.
18 Visdom er mere værd end flotte koraller
og kostbare perler.
19 Topas fra Nubien er ikke nok,
det ædleste guld hjælper ingenting.
20 Hvor kommer visdommen fra?
Hvor er klogskabens hjemsted?
21 Den er skjult for både dyr og mennesker,
selv himlens fugle kan ikke få øje på den.
22 Døden og dødsriget siger:
‚Vi har hørt et rygte om, hvor den findes.’
23 Men kun Gud kender vejen derhen,
han alene ved, hvor den findes,
24 for han skuer ud over jorden,
han ser alt, hvad der sker under himlen.
25 Han satte grænser for vindens styrke
og afmålte mængden af vand i havet.
26 Han fastsatte de naturlove,
der styrer regnen og tordenvejret.
27 Derefter så han på visdommen
og undersøgte den nøje.
Han vurderede den omhyggeligt
og fastsatte dens værdi.
28 Til sidst sagde han til mennesket:
‚Hør godt efter!
Visdom er at have ærefrygt for Herren.
Klogskab er at tage afstand fra det onde.’ ”

Job’s Discourse on Wisdom
28 “Surely there is a mine for silver,
And a place where gold is refined.
2 Iron is taken from the [a]earth,
And copper is smelted from ore.
3 Man puts an end to darkness,
And searches every recess
For ore in the darkness and the shadow of death.
4 He breaks open a shaft away from people;
In places forgotten by feet
They hang far away from men;
They swing to and fro.
5 As for the earth, from it comes bread,
But underneath it is turned up as by fire;
6 Its stones are the source of sapphires,
And it contains gold dust.
7 That path no bird knows,
Nor has the falcon’s eye seen it.
8 The [b]proud lions have not trodden it,
Nor has the fierce lion passed over it.
9 He puts his hand on the flint;
He overturns the mountains [c]at the roots.
10 He cuts out channels in the rocks,
And his eye sees every precious thing.
11 He dams up the streams from trickling;
What is hidden he brings forth to light.
12 “But(A) where can wisdom be found?
And where is the place of understanding?
13 Man does not know its (B)value,
Nor is it found in the land of the living.
14 (C)The deep says, ‘It is not in me’;
And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’

Nor can silver be weighed for its price.
16 It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir,
In precious onyx or sapphire.

Nor can it be exchanged for [d]jewelry of fine gold.
18 No mention shall be made of [e]coral or quartz,
For the price of wisdom is above (F)rubies.
19 The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it,
Nor can it be valued in pure (G)gold.
20 “From(H) where then does wisdom come?
And where is the place of understanding?
21 It is hidden from the eyes of all living,
And concealed from the birds of the [f]air.

‘We have heard a report about it with our ears.’
23 God understands its way,
And He knows its place.
24 For He looks to the ends of the earth,
And (J)sees under the whole heavens,
25 (K)To establish a weight for the wind,
And apportion the waters by measure.

And a path for the thunderbolt,
27 Then He saw [h]wisdom and declared it;
He prepared it, indeed, He searched it out.

‘Behold, (M)the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,
And to depart from evil is understanding.’ ”

28 “Silver surely has its vein, and gold its refining place.
2 “Iron is taken out of the dust, and copper is smelted out of the stone.
3 “God sets an end to darkness, and He tests the perfection of all things. He sets a bond of darkness and of the shadow of death.
4 “The torrent breaks out against the sojourner, forgotten by the foot. They hang lower than man, gone far away.
5 “Out of the same earth comes bread. And under it, as it were, fire is turned up,
6 “its stones a place of sapphires, and the dust of it gold.
7 “There is a path which no bird has known, nor has the kite’s eye seen it.
8 “The lion’s whelps have not walked it, nor the lion passed by it.
9 “He puts His Hand upon the rocks and overthrows the mountains by the roots.
10 “He breaks rivers in the roots, and His Eye sees every precious thing.
11 “He binds the rivers, so that they do not overflow. And the thing that is hidden He brings to light.
12 “But where is wisdom found? And where is the place of understanding?

15 “Gold shall not be given for it, nor shall silver be weighed for its price.

18 “No mention shall be made of coral or of the gabish. For wisdom is more precious than pearls.

20 “From where, then, does wisdom come? And where is the place of understanding,
21 “seeing it is hidden from the eyes of all the living, and is hidden from the birds of the heaven?

2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone.
3 He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.
4 The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men.
5 As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire.
6 The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold.
7 There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture's eye hath not seen:
8 The lion's whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.
9 He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots.
10 He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.

21 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.

24 For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;
25 To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.
26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
