23 Job svarade:
2 Min klagan är fortfarande bitter, och mitt lidande långt värre än vad mina synder förtjänar.
3 Om jag ändå visste hur jag skulle kunna finna Gud, så att jag kunde gå fram till hans tron och tala med honom där!
4-5 Då skulle jag lägga fram min sak som jag ser den och lyssna till hans svar.
6 Skulle han överväldiga mig med sin storhet? Nej, han skulle inte anklaga mig.
7 Ärliga och uppriktiga människor kan resonera med honom, och därför skulle han, min domare, förklara mig oskyldig.
8 Men jag letar förgäves. Jag söker honom i öster och han är inte där, och i väster finns han inte heller.
9 Kanske har han något att uträtta i norr? Jag söker honom men kan inte finna honom där, och inte heller när han beger sig söderut.
10 Men han vet om varje liten sak som händer mig och när han har prövat mig ska han förklara mig helt oskyldig, ren som det finaste guld!
11 Jag har hållit mig till Herrens vägar och följt hans spår. Jag har inte vikit av åt något håll.
12 Jag har inte förkastat hans bud utan i stället glatt mig åt hans ord mer än åt mitt dagliga bröd.
13 Men han är en och densamme, och vem kan få honom att ändra sina planer? Vad han än vill göra, det gör han.
14 Därför kommer han att behandla mig som han har tänkt, och än har jag inte sett slutet på han vägar med mig.
15 Inte undra på att jag känner mig skräckslagen i hans närhet! När jag tänker efter, blir jag fruktansvärt rädd.
16-17 Gud har tagit ifrån mig min frimodighet, han, den Allsmäktige, har skrämt mig. Men ändå kan han inte alldeles tysta mig, trots det tjocka, ogenomträngliga mörkret som finns överallt omkring mig.

2 Också idag är min klagan bitter,
hans[a] hand är tung, och jag suckar.
3 Om jag ändå visste hur jag skulle kunna finna honom,
så att jag kunde gå till hans boning!
4 Då skulle jag lägga fram min sak
och fylla min mun med argument.
5 Då skulle jag få veta vad han kan svara mig,
begrunda vad han har att säga mig.
6 Skulle han bemöta mig med sin storhet?
Nej, han skulle lyssna på mig.
7 Den uppriktige skulle då få lägga fram sin sak för honom,
och jag skulle för alltid bli frikänd av min domare.
8 Men om jag söker honom i öster är han inte där,
och går jag åt väster finns han inte där heller.
9 Är han verksam i norr ser jag det inte,
beger han sig söderut finner jag honom inte.
10 Men han vet vilken väg jag går,
och om han prövar mig
ska jag framstå som guld.
11 Jag har hållit mig till hans fotspår och följt hans väg.
Jag har inte vikit av åt något håll.
12 Jag har inte förkastat hans uttalade bud
utan bevarat hans ord som mer värdefulla än mitt dagliga bröd.
13 Men han är den ende,
och vem kan motstå honom?
Vad han än vill göra, det gör han.
14 Därför kommer han att fullborda vad han beslutat om mig
och mycket mer av samma slag.
15 Därför känner jag fruktan inför honom,
och jag blir skräckslagen när jag tänker på allt det här.
16 Gud gör mig rädd,
den Väldige får mig att bäva.
17 Men ändå får mörkret inte alldeles tysta mig,
det ogenomträngliga mörkret som täcker mig.[b]

Job’s Seventh Reply. 1 Then Job answered and said:
2 Today especially my complaint is bitter,
his hand is heavy upon me in my groanings.
3 Would that I knew how to find him,
that I might come to his dwelling!
4 I would set out my case before him,
fill my mouth with arguments;
5 I would learn the words he would answer me,
understand what he would say to me.
6 Would he contend against me with his great power?
No, he himself would heed me!
7 There an upright man might argue with him,
and I would once and for all be delivered from my judge.
8 But if I go east, he is not there;[a]
or west, I cannot perceive him;
9 The north enfolds him, and I cannot catch sight of him;
The south hides him, and I cannot see him.
10 Yet he knows my way;
if he tested me, I should come forth like gold.(A)
11 My foot has always walked in his steps;
I have kept his way and not turned aside.
12 From the commands of his lips I have not departed;
the words of his mouth I have treasured in my heart.
13 But once he decides, who can contradict him?
What he desires, that he does.(B)
14 For he will carry out what is appointed for me,
and many such things he has in store.
15 Therefore I am terrified before him;
when I take thought, I dread him.
16 For it is God who has made my heart faint,
the Almighty who has terrified me.
17 Yes, would that I had vanished in darkness,
hidden by the thick gloom before me.

23 Then Job replied:

3 If only I knew where to find him;
if only I could go to his dwelling!(D)

No, he would not press charges against me.(I)
7 There the upright(J) can establish their innocence before him,(K)
and there I would be delivered forever from my judge.(L)
8 “But if I go to the east, he is not there;
if I go to the west, I do not find him.
9 When he is at work in the north, I do not see him;
when he turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of him.(M)
10 But he knows the way that I take;(N)
when he has tested me,(O) I will come forth as gold.(P)
11 My feet have closely followed his steps;(Q)
I have kept to his way without turning aside.(R)
12 I have not departed from the commands of his lips;(S)
I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.(T)
13 “But he stands alone, and who can oppose him?(U)
He does whatever he pleases.(V)
14 He carries out his decree against me,
and many such plans he still has in store.(W)
15 That is why I am terrified before him;(X)
when I think of all this, I fear him.(Y)
16 God has made my heart faint;(Z)
the Almighty(AA) has terrified me.(AB)
17 Yet I am not silenced by the darkness,(AC)
by the thick darkness that covers my face.
