Is it because of your [a]reverence that He punishes you,
That He (A)enters into judgment against you?
Is (B)your wickedness not abundant,
And is there no end to your guilty deeds?
For you have (C)seized pledges from your brothers without cause,
And [b](D)stripped people naked.
You have (E)given the weary no water to drink,
And you have (F)withheld bread from the hungry.
But the earth (G)belongs to the (H)powerful man,
And (I)the one who is honorable dwells on it.
You have sent (J)widows away empty,
And the [c]strength of (K)orphans has been crushed.
10 Therefore (L)traps surround you,
And sudden (M)dread terrifies you,
11 Or (N)darkness, so that you cannot see,
And a (O)flood of water covers you.

  3. Job 22:9 Lit arms

Will he acquit you just because you fear him,
and render a verdict on your behalf?
Your wickedness is great, isn’t it?
There’s no limit to your iniquity, is there?

“After all, you’ve taken collateral from your relatives for no reason;
you stripped the naked of their clothing.[a]
You’ve neglected to give water to the weary,[b]
and you’ve withheld food from the hungry.
The land belongs to the powerful,
and the privileged[c] thrive in it.
You sent away widows empty-handed,
and broke the outstretched arms of orphans.
10 That’s why disaster surrounds you,
    terror suddenly overwhelms you,
11 you see nothing but darkness,
and a flood of troubles[d] drowns you.”
