Tercer discurso de Elifaz
22 A esto respondió Elifaz de Temán:
2 «¿Puede alguien, por muy sabio que sea,
serle a Dios de algún provecho?
3 ¿Sacará alguna ventaja el Todopoderoso
con que seas un hombre justo?
¿Tendrá algún beneficio
si tu conducta es intachable?
4 »¿Acaso te reprende por temerlo
y por eso te lleva a juicio?
5 ¿No es acaso demasiada tu maldad?
¿Y no son incontables tus pecados?
6 Sin motivo demandabas fianza de tus hermanos,
y en prenda los despojabas de sus mantos;
desnudos los dejabas.
7 Al sediento no le dabas agua;
al hambriento le negabas la comida.
8 Como hombre de poder te adueñaste de la tierra;
como hombre prominente, en ella te asentaste.
9 No dabas nada a las viudas
y rompías los brazos[a] a los huérfanos.
10 Por eso ahora te ves rodeado de trampas
y te asaltan temores repentinos;
11 la oscuridad te impide ver
y te ahogan las aguas torrenciales.
12 »¿No está Dios en las alturas de los cielos?
¡Mira las estrellas, cuán altas y remotas!
13 Sin embargo, cuestionas: “¿Y Dios qué sabe?
¿Puede acaso juzgar a través de las tinieblas?
14 Él recorre los cielos de un extremo al otro
y densas nubes lo envuelven,
¡así que no puede vernos!”.
15 ¿Vas a seguir por los trillados caminos
que han recorrido los malvados?
16 Perdieron la vida antes de tiempo;
un diluvio arrasó sus cimientos.
17 Increparon a Dios: “¡Déjanos tranquilos!
¿Qué puedes tú hacernos,[b] Todopoderoso?”.
18 ¡Y fue Dios quien llenó sus casas de bienes!
¡Yo no me dejaré llevar por sus malos consejos!
19 Los justos se alegran al ver la ruina de los malvados;
los inocentes dicen en son de burla:
20 “Nuestros enemigos han sido destruidos;
el fuego ha consumido sus riquezas”.
21 »Sométete a Dios; ponte en paz con él
y volverá a ti la prosperidad.
22 Acepta la enseñanza que mana de su boca;
grábate sus palabras en tu corazón.
23 Si te vuelves al Todopoderoso
y alejas de tu casa la maldad,
serás del todo restaurado;
24 si tu oro refinado[c] lo arrojas por el suelo,
entre rocas y cañadas,
25 tendrás por oro al Todopoderoso,
y será él para ti como plata refinada.
26 En el Todopoderoso te deleitarás;
ante Dios levantarás tu rostro.
27 Cuando ores, él te escuchará
y tú le cumplirás tus promesas.
28 Tendrás éxito en tus decisiones
y en tus caminos brillará la luz.
29 Cuando sean humillados y les digas “Levántense”,
Dios salvará a los humildes.
30 Él librará aun al que no es inocente;
si tienes manos limpias, quedarás a salvo».

22 І заговорив теманянин Еліфаз та й сказав:
2 Чи для Бога людина корисна? Бо мудрий корисний самому собі!
3 Хіба Всемогутній бажає, щоб ти ніби праведним був? І що за користь Йому, як дороги свої ти вважаєш невинними сам?
4 Чи Він буде карати, тебе боячись, і чи піде з тобою на суд?
5 Хіба твоє зло не велике? Таж твоїм беззаконням немає кінця!
6 Таж з братів своїх брав ти заставу даремно, а з нагого одежу стягав!
7 Не поїв ти водою знеможеного, і від голодного стримував хліб...
8 А сильна людина то їй оцей край, і почесний у ньому сидітиме.
9 Ти напорожньо вдів відсилав, і сирітські рамена гнобились,
10 тому пастки тебе оточили, і жахає тебе наглий страх,
11 твоє світло стемніло, нічого не бачиш, і велика вода закриває тебе...
12 Чи ж Бог не високий, як небо? Та на зорі угору поглянь, які стали високі вони!
13 А ти кажеш: Що відає Бог? Чи судитиме Він через млу?
14 Хмари завіса Йому, й Він не бачить, і ходить по крузі небесному.
15 Чи ти будеш триматись дороги відвічної, що нею ступали безбожні,
16 що невчасно були вони згублені, що річка розлита, підвалина їх,
17 що до Бога казали вони: Відступися від нас! та: Що зробить для нас Всемогутній?
18 А Він доми їхні наповнив добром!... Але віддалилась від мене порада безбожних!
19 Справедливі це бачать та тішаться, і насміхається з нього невинний:
20 Справді вигублений наш противник, а останок їх вижер огонь!
21 Заприязнися із Ним, та й май спокій, цим прийде на тебе добро.
22 Закона візьми з Його уст, а слова Його в серце своє поклади.
23 Якщо вернешся до Всемогутнього, будеш збудований, і віддалиш беззаконня з наметів своїх.
24 І викинь до пороху золото, і мов камінь з потоку офірське те золото,
25 і буде тобі Всемогутній за золото та за срібло блискуче тобі!
26 Бо тоді Всемогутнього ти покохаєш і до Бога підіймеш обличчя своє,
27 будеш благати Його й Він почує тебе, і ти обітниці свої надолужиш.
28 А що постановиш, то виповниться те тобі, й на дорогах твоїх буде сяяти світло.
29 Бо знижує Він спину пишного, хто ж смиренний, тому помагає.
30 Рятує Він і небезвинного, і той чистотою твоїх рук урятований буде.

Eliphaz Accuses and Exhorts Job
22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2
“Can a vigorous man be of use to God,
Or a wise man be useful to himself?(A)
3
“Is it any pleasure or joy to [a]the Almighty that you are righteous?
Or is it of benefit to Him that you make your ways perfect?(B)
4
“Is it because of your fear of Him that He corrects you,
That He enters into judgment against you?
5
“Is not your wickedness great,
And your sins without end?
6
“For you have taken pledges of your brothers without cause,
And stripped men naked.
7
“You have not given water to the weary to drink,
And you have withheld bread from the hungry.(C)
8
“But the land is possessed by the man with power,
And the favored and honorable man dwells in it.
9
“You have sent widows away empty-handed,
And the arms (strength) of the fatherless have been broken.
10
“Therefore snares surround you,
And sudden dread terrifies and overwhelms you;
11
Or darkness, so that you cannot see,
And a flood of water covers you.
12
“Is not God in the height of heaven?
And behold the distant stars, how high they are!
13
“You say, ‘What does God know [about me]?
Can He judge through the thick darkness?
14
‘Thick clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see,
And He walks on the vault (circle) of the heavens.’
15
“Will you keep to the ancient path
That wicked men walked [in the time of Noah],(D)
16
Men who were snatched away before their time,
Whose foundations were poured out like a river?
17
“They said to God, ‘Depart from us!
What can the Almighty do for us or to us?’
18
“Yet He filled their houses with good things;
But the counsel of the wicked and ungodly is far from me.
19
“The righteous see it and are glad;
And the innocent mock and laugh at them, saying,
20
‘Surely our adversaries are cut off and destroyed,
And fire has consumed their abundance.’
21
“Now yield and submit yourself to Him [agree with God and be conformed to His will] and be at peace;
In this way [you will prosper and great] good will come to you.
22
“Please receive the law and instruction from His mouth
And establish His words in your heart and keep them.(E)
23
“If you return to the Almighty [and submit and humble yourself before Him], you will be built up [and restored];
If you remove unrighteousness far from your tents,
24
And place your gold in the dust,
And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks [considering it of little value],
25
And make the Almighty your gold
And your precious silver,
26
Then you will have delight in the Almighty,
And you will lift up your face to God.
27
“You will pray to Him, and He will hear you,
And you will pay your vows.
28
“You will also decide and decree a thing, and it will be established for you;
And the light [of God’s favor] will shine upon your ways.
29
“When you are cast down and humbled, you will speak with confidence,
And the humble person He will lift up and save.
30
“He will even rescue the one [for whom you intercede] who is not innocent;
And he will be rescued through the cleanness of your hands.”(F)

22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite(A) replied:
2 “Can a man be of benefit to God?(B)
Can even a wise person benefit him?(C)
3 What pleasure(D) would it give the Almighty if you were righteous?(E)
What would he gain if your ways were blameless?(F)
4 “Is it for your piety that he rebukes you
and brings charges against you?(G)
5 Is not your wickedness great?
Are not your sins(H) endless?(I)
6 You demanded security(J) from your relatives for no reason;(K)
you stripped people of their clothing, leaving them naked.(L)
7 You gave no water(M) to the weary
and you withheld food from the hungry,(N)
8 though you were a powerful man, owning land(O)—
an honored man,(P) living on it.(Q)
9 And you sent widows(R) away empty-handed(S)
and broke the strength of the fatherless.(T)
10 That is why snares(U) are all around you,(V)
why sudden peril terrifies you,(W)
11 why it is so dark(X) you cannot see,
and why a flood of water covers you.(Y)
12 “Is not God in the heights of heaven?(Z)
And see how lofty are the highest stars!
13 Yet you say, ‘What does God know?(AA)
Does he judge through such darkness?(AB)
14 Thick clouds(AC) veil him, so he does not see us(AD)
as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.’(AE)
15 Will you keep to the old path
that the wicked(AF) have trod?(AG)
16 They were carried off before their time,(AH)
their foundations(AI) washed away by a flood.(AJ)
17 They said to God, ‘Leave us alone!
What can the Almighty do to us?’(AK)
18 Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things,(AL)
so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.(AM)
19 The righteous see their ruin and rejoice;(AN)
the innocent mock(AO) them, saying,
20 ‘Surely our foes are destroyed,(AP)
and fire(AQ) devours their wealth.’
21 “Submit to God and be at peace(AR) with him;(AS)
in this way prosperity will come to you.(AT)
22 Accept instruction from his mouth(AU)
and lay up his words(AV) in your heart.(AW)
23 If you return(AX) to the Almighty, you will be restored:(AY)
If you remove wickedness far from your tent(AZ)
24 and assign your nuggets(BA) to the dust,
your gold(BB) of Ophir(BC) to the rocks in the ravines,(BD)
25 then the Almighty will be your gold,(BE)
the choicest silver for you.(BF)
26 Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty(BG)
and will lift up your face(BH) to God.(BI)
27 You will pray to him,(BJ) and he will hear you,(BK)
and you will fulfill your vows.(BL)
28 What you decide on will be done,(BM)
and light(BN) will shine on your ways.(BO)
29 When people are brought low(BP) and you say, ‘Lift them up!’
then he will save the downcast.(BQ)
30 He will deliver even one who is not innocent,(BR)
who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”(BS)
