Tercer discurso de Elifaz

22 A esto respondió Elifaz de Temán:

²«¿Puede alguien, por muy sabio que sea,
    serle a Dios de algún provecho?
³¿Sacará alguna ventaja el Todopoderoso
    con que seas un hombre justo?
¿Tendrá algún beneficio
    si tu conducta es intachable?

⁴»¿Acaso te reprende por temerlo
    y por eso te lleva a juicio?
⁵¿No es acaso demasiada tu maldad?
    ¿Y no son incontables tus pecados?
⁶Sin motivo demandabas fianza de tus hermanos,
    y en prenda los despojabas de sus mantos;
    desnudos los dejabas.
⁷Al sediento no le dabas agua;
    al hambriento le negabas la comida.
⁸Como hombre de poder te adueñaste de la tierra;
    como hombre prominente, en ella te asentaste.
⁹No dabas nada a las viudas
    y rompías los brazos^[a] a los huérfanos.
¹⁰Por eso ahora te ves rodeado de trampas
    y te asaltan temores repentinos;
¹¹la oscuridad te impide ver
    y te ahogan las aguas torrenciales.

¹²»¿No está Dios en las alturas de los cielos?
    ¡Mira las estrellas, cuán altas y remotas!
¹³Sin embargo, cuestionas: “¿Y Dios qué sabe?
    ¿Puede acaso juzgar a través de las tinieblas?
¹⁴Él recorre los cielos de un extremo al otro
    y densas nubes lo envuelven,
    ¡así que no puede vernos!”.
¹⁵¿Vas a seguir por los trillados caminos
    que han recorrido los malvados?
¹⁶Perdieron la vida antes de tiempo;
    un diluvio arrasó sus cimientos.
¹⁷Increparon a Dios: “¡Déjanos tranquilos!
    ¿Qué puedes tú hacernos,^[b] Todopoderoso?”.
¹⁸¡Y fue Dios quien llenó sus casas de bienes!
    ¡Yo no me dejaré llevar por sus malos consejos!
¹⁹Los justos se alegran al ver la ruina de los malvados;
    los inocentes dicen en son de burla:
²⁰“Nuestros enemigos han sido destruidos;
    el fuego ha consumido sus riquezas”.

²¹»Sométete a Dios; ponte en paz con él
    y volverá a ti la prosperidad.
²²Acepta la enseñanza que mana de su boca;
    grábate sus palabras en tu corazón.
²³Si te vuelves al Todopoderoso
    y alejas de tu casa la maldad,
    serás del todo restaurado;
²⁴si tu oro refinado^[c] lo arrojas por el suelo,
    entre rocas y cañadas,
²⁵tendrás por oro al Todopoderoso,
    y será él para ti como plata refinada.
²⁶En el Todopoderoso te deleitarás;
    ante Dios levantarás tu rostro.
²⁷Cuando ores, él te escuchará
    y tú le cumplirás tus promesas.
²⁸Tendrás éxito en tus decisiones
    y en tus caminos brillará la luz.
²⁹Cuando sean humillados y les digas “Levántense”,
    Dios salvará a los humildes.
³⁰Él librará aun al que no es inocente;
    si tienes manos limpias, quedarás a salvo».

22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

²Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?

³Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?

⁴Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?

⁵Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?

⁶For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

⁷Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

⁸But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

⁹Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

¹⁰Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

¹¹Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.

¹²Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

¹³And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?

¹⁴Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.

¹⁵Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?

¹⁶Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:

¹⁷Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?

¹⁸Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

¹⁹The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.

²⁰Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.

²¹Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

²²Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

²³If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.

²⁴Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

²⁵Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

²⁶For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

²⁷Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.

²⁸Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

²⁹When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

³⁰He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.

22 І заговорив теманянин Еліфаз та й сказав:

²Чи для Бога людина корисна? Бо мудрий корисний самому собі!

³Хіба Всемогутній бажає, щоб ти ніби праведним був? І що за користь Йому, як дороги свої ти вважаєш невинними сам?

⁴Чи Він буде карати, тебе боячись, і чи піде з тобою на суд?

⁵Хіба твоє зло не велике? Таж твоїм беззаконням немає кінця!

⁶Таж з братів своїх брав ти заставу даремно, а з нагого одежу стягав!

⁷Не поїв ти водою знеможеного, і від голодного стримував хліб...

⁸А сильна людина то їй оцей край, і почесний у ньому сидітиме.

⁹Ти напорожньо вдів відсилав, і сирітські рамена гнобились,

¹⁰тому пастки тебе оточили, і жахає тебе наглий страх,

¹¹твоє світло стемніло, нічого не бачиш, і велика вода закриває тебе...

¹²Чи ж Бог не високий, як небо? Та на зорі угору поглянь, які стали високі вони!

¹³А ти кажеш: Що відає Бог? Чи судитиме Він через млу?

¹⁴Хмари завіса Йому, й Він не бачить, і ходить по крузі небесному.

¹⁵Чи ти будеш триматись дороги відвічної, що нею ступали безбожні,

¹⁶що невчасно були вони згублені, що річка розлита, підвалина їх,

¹⁷що до Бога казали вони: Відступися від нас! та: Що зробить для нас Всемогутній?

¹⁸А Він доми їхні наповнив добром!... Але віддалилась від мене порада безбожних!

¹⁹Справедливі це бачать та тішаться, і насміхається з нього невинний:

²⁰Справді вигублений наш противник, а останок їх вижер огонь!

²¹Заприязнися із Ним, та й май спокій, цим прийде на тебе добро.

²²Закона візьми з Його уст, а слова Його в серце своє поклади.

²³Якщо вернешся до Всемогутнього, будеш збудований, і віддалиш беззаконня з наметів своїх.

²⁴І викинь до пороху золото, і мов камінь з потоку офірське те золото,

²⁵і буде тобі Всемогутній за золото та за срібло блискуче тобі!

²⁶Бо тоді Всемогутнього ти покохаєш і до Бога підіймеш обличчя своє,

²⁷будеш благати Його й Він почує тебе, і ти обітниці свої надолужиш.

²⁸А що постановиш, то виповниться те тобі, й на дорогах твоїх буде сяяти світло.

²⁹Бо знижує Він спину пишного, хто ж смиренний, тому помагає.

³⁰Рятує Він і небезвинного, і той чистотою твоїх рук урятований буде.

Amplified Bible

Eliphaz Accuses and Exhorts Job

22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

“Can a vigorous man be of use to God,
Or a wise man be useful to himself?^(A)
³
“Is it any pleasure or joy to ^[a]the Almighty that you are righteous?
Or is it of benefit to Him that you make your ways perfect?^(B)

“Is it because of your fear of Him that He corrects you,
That He enters into judgment against you?
⁵
“Is not your wickedness great,
And your sins without end?
⁶
“For you have taken pledges of your brothers without cause,
And stripped men naked.
⁷
“You have not given water to the weary to drink,
And you have withheld bread from the hungry.^(C)

“But the land is possessed by the man with power,
And the favored and honorable man dwells in it.
⁹
“You have sent widows away empty-handed,
And the arms (strength) of the fatherless have been broken.
¹⁰
“Therefore snares surround you,
And sudden dread terrifies and overwhelms you;
¹¹
Or darkness, so that you cannot see,
And a flood of water covers you.

“Is not God in the height of heaven?
And behold the distant stars, how high they are!
¹³
“You say, ‘What does God know [about me]?
Can He judge through the thick darkness?
¹⁴
‘Thick clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see,
And He walks on the vault (circle) of the heavens.’

“Will you keep to the ancient path
That wicked men walked [in the time of Noah],^(D)
¹⁶
Men who were snatched away before their time,
Whose foundations were poured out like a river?
¹⁷
“They said to God, ‘Depart from us!
What can the Almighty do for us or to us?’
¹⁸
“Yet He filled their houses with good things;
But the counsel of the wicked and ungodly is far from me.
¹⁹
“The righteous see it and are glad;
And the innocent mock and laugh at them, saying,
²⁰
‘Surely our adversaries are cut off and destroyed,
And fire has consumed their abundance.’

²¹
“Now yield and submit yourself to Him [agree with God and be conformed to His will] and be at peace;
In this way [you will prosper and great] good will come to you.
²²
“Please receive the law and instruction from His mouth
And establish His words in your heart and keep them.^(E)
²³
“If you return to the Almighty [and submit and humble yourself before Him], you will be built up [and restored];
If you remove unrighteousness far from your tents,
²⁴
And place your gold in the dust,
And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks [considering it of little value],
²⁵
And make the Almighty your gold
And your precious silver,
²⁶
Then you will have delight in the Almighty,
And you will lift up your face to God.
²⁷
“You will pray to Him, and He will hear you,
And you will pay your vows.
²⁸
“You will also decide and decree a thing, and it will be established for you;
And the light [of God’s favor] will shine upon your ways.
²⁹
“When you are cast down and humbled, you will speak with confidence,
And the humble person He will lift up and save.
³⁰
“He will even rescue the one [for whom you intercede] who is not innocent;
And he will be rescued through the cleanness of your hands.”^(F)
