You keep your relatives’ goods in pledge unjustly,[a]
    leave them stripped naked of their clothing.(A)
To the thirsty you give no water to drink,
    and from the hungry you withhold bread;
As if the land belonged to the powerful,
    and only the privileged could dwell in it!
You sent widows away empty-handed,
    and the resources of orphans are destroyed.(B)
10 Therefore snares are round about you,(C)
    sudden terror makes you panic,
11 Or darkness—you cannot see!
    A deluge of waters covers you.

  1. 22:6–9 This criticism of Job by Eliphaz is untrue (cf. 31:19), but he is driven to it by his belief that God always acts justly, even when he causes someone to suffer; suffering is due to wrongdoing (cf. v. 29).

For you have exacted pledges from your family for no reason,
    and stripped the naked of their clothing.
You have given no water to the weary to drink,
    and you have withheld bread from the hungry.
The powerful possess the land,
    and the favored live in it.
You have sent widows away empty-handed,
    and the arms of the orphans you have crushed.[a]
10 Therefore snares are around you,
    and sudden terror overwhelms you,
11 or darkness so that you cannot see;
    a flood of water covers you.

  1. Job 22:9 Gk Syr Tg Vg: Heb were crushed

You have taken payments from your family for no reason;
    stripped the naked, leaving no clothes;
    denied water to the thirsty,
    withheld bread from the starving.
(The powerful own land;
    the favored live in it.)
You have sent widows away empty;
    crushed orphans’ resources.
10 For this reason, snares surround you;
    sudden dread brings panic to you
11     or a darkness that you can’t see;
    rushing water will cover you.
