Job 22-31
New American Standard Bible 1995
Eliphaz Accuses and Exhorts Job
22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite [a]responded,
2 “Can a vigorous (A)man be of use to God,
Or a wise man be useful to himself?
3 “Is there any pleasure to [b]the Almighty if you are righteous,
Or profit if you make your ways perfect?
4 “Is it because of your [c]reverence that He reproves you,
That He (B)enters into judgment against you?
5 “Is not (C)your wickedness great,
And your iniquities without end?
6 “For you have (D)taken pledges of your brothers without cause,
And (E)stripped [d]men naked.
7 “To the weary you have (F)given no water to drink,
And from the hungry you have (G)withheld bread.
8 “But the earth (H)belongs to the (I)mighty man,
And (J)the honorable man dwells in it.
9 “You have sent (K)widows away empty,
And the [e]strength of the (L)orphans has been crushed.
10 “Therefore (M)snares surround you,
And sudden (N)dread terrifies you,
11 Or (O)darkness, so that you cannot see,
And an (P)abundance of water covers you.
12 “Is not God (Q)in the height of heaven?
Look also at the [f]distant stars, how high they are!
13 “You say, ‘(R)What does God know?
Can He judge through the thick darkness?
14 ‘(S)Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see;
And He walks on the [g]vault of heaven.’
15 “Will you keep to the ancient path
Which (T)wicked men have trod,
16 Who were snatched away (U)before their time,
Whose (V)foundations were [h]washed away by a river?
17 “They (W)said to God, ‘Depart from us!’
And ‘What can [i]the Almighty do to them?’
18 “Yet He (X)filled their houses with good things;
But (Y)the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
19 “The (Z)righteous see and are glad,
And the innocent mock them,
20 Saying, ‘Truly our adversaries are cut off,
And their [j]abundance (AA)the fire has consumed.’
21 “[k](AB)Yield now and be at peace with Him;
Thereby good will come to you.
22 “Please receive [l](AC)instruction from His mouth
And establish His words in your heart.
23 “If you (AD)return to [m]the Almighty, you will be [n]restored;
If you (AE)remove unrighteousness far from your tent,
24 And (AF)place your [o]gold in the dust,
And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks,
25 Then [p]the Almighty will be your [q]gold
And choice silver to you.
26 “For then you will (AG)delight in [r]the Almighty
And lift up your face to God.
27 “You will (AH)pray to Him, and (AI)He will hear you;
And you will pay your vows.
28 “You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you;
And (AJ)light will shine on your ways.
29 “When [s]you are cast down, you will speak with [t]confidence,
And the [u](AK)humble person He will save.
30 “He will deliver one who is not innocent,
And he will be (AL)delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”
Job Says He Longs for God
23 Then Job [v]replied,
2 “Even today my (AM)complaint is rebellion;
[w]His hand is (AN)heavy despite my groaning.
3 “Oh that I knew where I might find Him,
That I might come to His seat!
4 “I would (AO)present my case before Him
And fill my mouth with arguments.
5 “I would learn the words which He would [x]answer,
And perceive what He would say to me.
6 “Would He contend with me by (AP)the greatness of His power?
No, surely He would pay attention to me.
7 “There the upright would (AQ)reason with Him;
And I [y]would be (AR)delivered forever from my Judge.
8 “Behold, I go forward but He is not there,
And backward, but I (AS)cannot perceive Him;
9 When He acts on the left, I cannot behold Him;
He turns on the right, I cannot see Him.
10 “But He knows the [z]way I take;
When He has (AT)tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
11 “My foot has (AU)held fast to His path;
I have kept His way and not turned aside.
12 “I have not departed from the command of His lips;
I have treasured the (AV)words of His mouth [aa]more than my [ab]necessary food.
13 “But He is unique and who can turn Him?
And what His soul desires, that He does.
14 “For He performs what is appointed for me,
And many such decrees are with Him.
15 “Therefore, I would be dismayed at His presence;
When I consider, I am terrified of Him.
16 “It is God who has made my (AW)heart faint,
And the Almighty who has dismayed me,
17 But I (AX)am not silenced by the darkness,
Nor (AY)deep gloom which covers me.
Job Says God Seems to Ignore Wrongs
24 “(AZ)Why are [ac]times not stored up by the Almighty,
And why do those who know Him not see (BA)His days?
2 “[ad]Some (BB)remove the landmarks;
They seize and [ae]devour flocks.
3 “They drive away the donkeys of the (BC)orphans;
They take the (BD)widow’s ox for a pledge.
4 “They push (BE)the needy aside from the road;
The (BF)poor of the land are made to hide themselves altogether.
5 “Behold, as (BG)wild donkeys in the wilderness
They (BH)go forth seeking food in their activity,
As [af]bread for their children in the desert.
6 “They harvest their fodder in the field
And glean the vineyard of the wicked.
7 “(BI)They spend the night naked, without clothing,
And have no covering against the cold.
8 “They are wet with the mountain rains
And hug the rock for want of a shelter.
9 “[ag]Others snatch the (BJ)orphan from the breast,
And against the poor they take a pledge.
10 “They cause the poor to go about naked without clothing,
And they take away the sheaves from the hungry.
11 “Within the walls they produce oil;
They tread wine presses but thirst.
12 “From the city men groan,
And the souls of the wounded cry out;
Yet God (BK)does not pay attention to folly.
13 “[ah]Others have been with those who rebel against the light;
They do not want to know its ways
Nor abide in its paths.
14 “The murderer (BL)arises at dawn;
He (BM)kills the poor and the needy,
And at night he is as a thief.
15 “The eye of the (BN)adulterer waits for the twilight,
Saying, ‘No eye will see me.’
And he [ai]disguises his face.
16 “In the dark they (BO)dig into houses,
They (BP)shut themselves up by day;
They do not know the light.
17 “For the morning is the same to him as thick darkness,
For he is familiar with the (BQ)terrors of thick darkness.
18 “They are [aj](BR)insignificant on the surface of the water;
Their portion is (BS)cursed on the earth.
They do not turn [ak]toward the (BT)vineyards.
19 “Drought and heat [al](BU)consume the snow waters,
So does [am](BV)Sheol those who have sinned.
20 “A [an](BW)mother will forget him;
The (BX)worm feeds sweetly till he is (BY)no longer remembered.
And wickedness will be broken (BZ)like a tree.
21 “He wrongs the [ao]barren woman
And does no good for (CA)the widow.
22 “But He drags off the valiant by (CB)His power;
He rises, but (CC)no one has assurance of life.
23 “He provides them (CD)with security, and they are supported;
And His (CE)eyes are on their ways.
24 “They are exalted a (CF)little while, then they are gone;
Moreover, they are (CG)brought low and like everything gathered up;
Even like the heads of grain they are cut off.
25 “Now if it is not so, (CH)who can prove me a liar,
And make my speech worthless?”
Bildad Says Man Is Inferior
25 Then Bildad the Shuhite [ap]answered,
2 “(CI)Dominion and awe [aq]belong to Him
Who establishes peace in (CJ)His heights.
3 “Is there any number to (CK)His troops?
And upon whom does His light not rise?
4 “How then can a man be (CL)just with God?
Or how can he be (CM)clean who is born of woman?
5 “If even (CN)the moon has no brightness
And the (CO)stars are not pure in His sight,
6 How much less (CP)man, that (CQ)maggot,
And the son of man, that worm!”
Job Rebukes Bildad
26 Then Job [ar]responded,
2 “What a help you are to [as](CR)the weak!
How you have saved the arm (CS)without strength!
3 “What counsel you have given to one without wisdom!
What helpful insight you have abundantly [at]provided!
4 “To whom have you uttered words?
And whose [au]spirit was expressed through you?
The Greatness of God
5 “The [av](CT)departed spirits tremble
Under the waters and their inhabitants.
6 “Naked is [aw](CU)Sheol before Him,
And [ax](CV)Abaddon has no covering.
7 “He (CW)stretches out the north over empty space
And hangs the earth on nothing.
8 “He (CX)wraps up the waters in His clouds,
And the cloud does not burst under them.
9 “He [ay](CY)obscures the face of the [az]full moon
And spreads His cloud over it.
10 “He has inscribed a (CZ)circle on the surface of the waters
At the (DA)boundary of light and darkness.
11 “The pillars of heaven tremble
And are amazed at His rebuke.
12 “He (DB)quieted the sea with His power,
And by His (DC)understanding He shattered (DD)Rahab.
13 “By His breath the (DE)heavens are [ba]cleared;
His hand has pierced (DF)the fleeing serpent.
14 “Behold, these are the fringes of His ways;
And how faint (DG)a word we hear of Him!
But His mighty (DH)thunder, who can understand?”
Job Affirms His Righteousness
27 Then Job [bb]continued his (DI)discourse and said,
2 “As God lives, (DJ)who has taken away my right,
And the Almighty, (DK)who has embittered my soul,
3 For as long as [bc]life is in me,
And the [bd](DL)breath of God is in my nostrils,
4 My lips certainly will not speak unjustly,
Nor will (DM)my tongue mutter deceit.
5 “Far be it from me that I should declare you right;
Till I die (DN)I will not put away my integrity from me.
6 “I (DO)hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go.
My heart does not reproach any of my days.
The State of the Godless
7 “May my enemy be as the wicked
And [be]my opponent as the unjust.
8 “For what is (DP)the hope of the godless [bf]when he is cut off,
When God requires (DQ)his [bg]life?
9 “Will God (DR)hear his cry
When (DS)distress comes upon him?
10 “Will he take (DT)delight in the Almighty?
Will he call on God at all times?
11 “I will instruct you in the [bh]power of God;
What is with the Almighty I will not conceal.
12 “Behold, all of you have seen it;
Why then do you [bi]act foolishly?
13 “This is (DU)the portion of a wicked man from God,
And the inheritance which (DV)tyrants receive from the Almighty.
14 “Though his sons are many, [bj]they are destined (DW)for the sword;
And his (DX)descendants will not be satisfied with bread.
15 “His survivors will be buried because of the plague,
And [bk]their (DY)widows will not be able to weep.
16 “Though he piles up silver like dust
And prepares garments as plentiful as the clay,
17 He may prepare it, (DZ)but the just will wear it
And the innocent will divide the silver.
18 “He has built his (EA)house like the [bl]spider’s web,
Or as a hut which the watchman has made.
19 “He lies down rich, but never [bm]again;
He opens his eyes, and (EB)it is no longer.
20 “(EC)Terrors overtake him like a flood;
A tempest steals him away (ED)in the night.
21 “The east (EE)wind carries him away, and he is gone,
For it whirls him (EF)away from his place.
22 “For it will hurl at him (EG)without sparing;
He will surely try to (EH)flee from its [bn]power.
23 “Men will clap their hands at him
And will (EI)hiss him from his place.
Job Tells of Earth’s Treasures
28 “Surely there is a [bo]mine for silver
And a place [bp]where they refine gold.
2 “Iron is taken from the dust,
And copper is smelted from rock.
3 “Man puts an end to darkness,
And (EJ)to the farthest limit he searches out
The rock in gloom and deep shadow.
4 “He [bq]sinks a shaft far from [br]habitation,
Forgotten by the foot;
They hang and swing to and fro far from men.
5 “The earth, from it comes food,
And underneath it is turned up as fire.
6 “Its rocks are the [bs]source of sapphires,
And its dust contains gold.
7 “The path no bird of prey knows,
Nor has the falcon’s eye caught sight of it.
8 “The [bt]proud beasts have not trodden it,
Nor has the fierce lion passed over it.
9 “He puts his hand on the flint;
He overturns the mountains at the [bu]base.
10 “He hews out channels through the rocks,
And his eye sees anything precious.
11 “He dams up the streams from [bv]flowing,
And what is hidden he brings out to the light.
The Search for Wisdom Is Harder
12 “But (EK)where can wisdom be found?
And where is the place of understanding?
13 “(EL)Man does not know its value,
Nor is it found in the land of the living.
14 “The deep says, ‘It is not in me’;
And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’
15 “(EM)Pure gold cannot be given in exchange for it,
Nor can silver be weighed as its price.
16 “It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir,
In precious onyx, or sapphire.
17 “(EN)Gold or glass cannot equal it,
Nor can it be exchanged for articles of fine gold.
18 “Coral and crystal are not to be mentioned;
And the acquisition of (EO)wisdom is above that of pearls.
19 “The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it,
Nor can it be valued in (EP)pure gold.
20 “(EQ)Where then does wisdom come from?
And where is the place of understanding?
21 “Thus it is hidden from the eyes of all living
And concealed from the birds of the sky.
22 “[bw](ER)Abaddon and Death say,
‘With our ears we have heard a report of it.’
23 “(ES)God understands its way,
And He knows its place.
24 “For He (ET)looks to the ends of the earth
And sees everything under the heavens.
25 “When He imparted (EU)weight to the wind
And (EV)meted out the waters by measure,
26 When He set a (EW)limit for the rain
And a course for the (EX)thunderbolt,
27 Then He saw it and declared it;
He established it and also searched it out.
28 “And to man He said, ‘Behold, the (EY)fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;
And to depart from evil is understanding.’”
Job’s Past Was Glorious
29 And Job again took up his (EZ)discourse and said,
2 “Oh that I were as in months gone by,
As in the days when God (FA)watched over me;
3 When (FB)His lamp shone over my head,
And (FC)by His light I walked through darkness;
4 As I was in [bx]the prime of my days,
When the [by](FD)friendship of God was over my tent;
5 When [bz]the Almighty was yet with me,
And my children were around me;
6 When my steps were bathed in (FE)butter,
And the (FF)rock poured out for me streams of oil!
7 “When I went out to (FG)the gate of the city,
When I [ca]took my seat in the square,
8 The young men saw me and hid themselves,
And the old men arose and stood.
9 “The princes (FH)stopped talking
And (FI)put their hands on their mouths;
10 The voice of the nobles was [cb](FJ)hushed,
And their (FK)tongue stuck to their palate.
11 “For when (FL)the ear heard, it called me blessed,
And when the eye saw, it gave witness of me,
12 Because I delivered (FM)the poor who cried for help,
And the (FN)orphan who had no helper.
13 “The blessing of the one (FO)ready to perish came upon me,
And I made the (FP)widow’s heart sing for joy.
14 “I (FQ)put on righteousness, and it clothed me;
My justice was like a robe and a turban.
15 “I was (FR)eyes to the blind
And feet to the lame.
16 “I was a father to (FS)the needy,
And I investigated the case which I did not know.
17 “I (FT)broke the jaws of the wicked
And snatched the prey from his teeth.
18 “Then I [cc]thought, ‘I shall die [cd]in my nest,
And I shall multiply my days as the sand.
19 ‘My (FU)root is spread out to the waters,
And (FV)dew lies all night on my branch.
20 ‘My glory is ever new with me,
And my (FW)bow is renewed in my hand.’
21 “To me (FX)they listened and waited,
And kept silent for my counsel.
22 “After my words they did not (FY)speak again,
And (FZ)my speech dropped on them.
23 “They waited for me as for the rain,
And opened their mouth as for the spring rain.
24 “I smiled on them when they did not believe,
And the light of my face they did not cast down.
25 “I chose a way for them and sat as (GA)chief,
And dwelt as a king among the troops,
As one who (GB)comforted the mourners.
Job’s Present State Is Humiliating
30 “But now those younger than I (GC)mock me,
Whose fathers I disdained to put with the dogs of my flock.
2 “Indeed, what good was the strength of their hands to me?
Vigor had perished from them.
3 “From want and famine they are gaunt
Who gnaw the dry ground by night in waste and desolation,
4 Who pluck [ce]mallow by the bushes,
And whose food is the root of the broom shrub.
5 “They are driven from the community;
They shout against them as against a thief,
6 So that they dwell in dreadful [cf]valleys,
In holes of the earth and of the rocks.
7 “Among the bushes they [cg]cry out;
Under the nettles they are gathered together.
8 “[ch]Fools, even [ci]those without a name,
They were scourged from the land.
9 “And now I have become their [cj](GD)taunt,
I have even become a (GE)byword to them.
10 “They abhor me and stand aloof from me,
And they do not [ck]refrain from (GF)spitting at my face.
11 “Because [cl]He has loosed [cm]His [cn]bowstring and (GG)afflicted me,
They have cast off (GH)the bridle before me.
12 “On the right hand their [co]brood arises;
They (GI)thrust aside my feet (GJ)and build up against me their ways of destruction.
13 “They (GK)break up my path,
They profit [cp]from my destruction;
No one restrains them.
14 “As through a wide breach they come,
[cq]Amid the tempest they roll on.
15 “(GL)Terrors are turned against me;
They pursue my [cr]honor as the wind,
And my [cs]prosperity has passed away (GM)like a cloud.
16 “And now (GN)my soul is poured out [ct]within me;
Days of affliction have seized me.
17 “At night it pierces (GO)my bones [cu]within me,
And my gnawing pains take no rest.
18 “By a great force my garment is (GP)distorted;
It binds me about as the collar of my coat.
19 “He has cast me into the (GQ)mire,
And I have become like dust and ashes.
20 “I (GR)cry out to You for help, but You do not answer me;
I stand up, and You turn Your attention against me.
21 “You have [cv]become cruel to me;
With the might of Your hand You (GS)persecute me.
22 “You (GT)lift me up to the wind and cause me to ride;
And You dissolve me in a storm.
23 “For I know that You (GU)will bring me to death
And to the (GV)house of meeting for all living.
24 “Yet does not one in a heap of ruins stretch out his hand,
Or in his disaster therefore (GW)cry out for help?
25 “Have I not (GX)wept for the [cw]one whose life is hard?
Was not my soul grieved for (GY)the needy?
26 “When I (GZ)expected good, then evil came;
When I waited for light, (HA)then darkness came.
27 “[cx]I am seething (HB)within and cannot relax;
Days of affliction confront me.
28 “I go about [cy](HC)mourning without comfort;
I stand up in the assembly and (HD)cry out for help.
29 “I have become a brother to (HE)jackals
And a companion of ostriches.
30 “My (HF)skin turns black [cz]on me,
And my (HG)bones burn with [da]fever.
31 “Therefore my (HH)harp [db]is turned to mourning,
And my flute to the sound of those who weep.
Job Asserts His Integrity
31 “I have made a covenant with my (HI)eyes;
How then could I gaze at a virgin?
2 “And what is (HJ)the portion of God from above
Or the heritage of the Almighty from on high?
3 “Is it not (HK)calamity to the unjust
And disaster to (HL)those who work iniquity?
4 “Does He not (HM)see my ways
And (HN)number all my steps?
5 “If I have (HO)walked with falsehood,
And my foot has hastened after deceit,
6 Let Him (HP)weigh me with [dc]accurate scales,
And let God know (HQ)my integrity.
7 “If my step has (HR)turned from the way,
Or my heart [dd]followed my eyes,
Or if any (HS)spot has stuck to my hands,
8 Let me (HT)sow and another eat,
And let my [de](HU)crops be uprooted.
9 “If my heart has been (HV)enticed by a woman,
Or I have lurked at my neighbor’s doorway,
10 May my wife (HW)grind for another,
And let (HX)others [df]kneel down over her.
11 “For that would be a (HY)lustful crime;
Moreover, it would be (HZ)an iniquity punishable by judges.
12 “For it would be (IA)fire that consumes to [dg](IB)Abaddon,
And would (IC)uproot all my [dh]increase.
13 “If I have (ID)despised the claim of my male or female slaves
When they filed a complaint against me,
14 What then could I do when God arises?
And when He calls me to account, what will I answer Him?
15 “Did not (IE)He who made me in the womb make him,
And the same one fashion us in the womb?
16 “If I have kept (IF)the poor from their desire,
Or have caused the eyes of (IG)the widow to fail,
17 Or have (IH)eaten my morsel alone,
And (II)the orphan has not [di]shared it
18 (But from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,
And from [dj]infancy I guided her),
19 If I have seen anyone perish (IJ)for lack of clothing,
Or that (IK)the needy had no covering,
20 If his loins have not [dk]thanked me,
And if he has not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep,
21 If I have lifted up my hand against (IL)the orphan,
Because I saw [dl]I had support (IM)in the gate,
22 Let my shoulder fall from the [dm]socket,
And my (IN)arm be broken off [dn]at the elbow.
23 “For (IO)calamity from God is a terror to me,
And because of (IP)His [do]majesty I can do nothing.
24 “If I have put my confidence in (IQ)gold,
And called fine gold my trust,
25 If I have (IR)gloated because my wealth was great,
And because my hand had secured so much;
26 If I have (IS)looked at the [dp]sun when it shone
Or the moon going in splendor,
27 And my heart became secretly enticed,
And my hand [dq]threw a kiss from my mouth,
28 That too would have been (IT)an iniquity calling for [dr]judgment,
For I would have (IU)denied God above.
29 “Have I (IV)rejoiced at the extinction of my enemy,
Or [ds]exulted when evil befell him?
30 “[dt]No, (IW)I have not [du]allowed my mouth to sin
By asking for his life in (IX)a curse.
31 “Have the men of my tent not said,
‘Who can [dv]find one who has not been (IY)satisfied with his meat’?
32 “The alien has not lodged outside,
For I have opened my doors to the [dw]traveler.
33 “Have I (IZ)covered my transgressions like [dx]Adam,
By hiding my iniquity in my bosom,
34 Because I (JA)feared the great multitude,
And the contempt of families terrified me,
And kept silent and did not go out of doors?
35 “Oh that I had one to hear me!
Behold, here is my [dy]signature;
(JB)Let the Almighty answer me!
And the indictment which my (JC)adversary has written,
36 Surely I would carry it on my shoulder,
I would bind it to myself like a crown.
37 “I would declare to Him (JD)the number of my steps;
Like (JE)a prince I would approach Him.
38 “If my (JF)land cries out against me,
And its furrows weep together;
39 If I have (JG)eaten its [dz]fruit without money,
Or have (JH)caused [ea]its owners to lose their lives,
40 Let (JI)briars [eb]grow instead of wheat,
And stinkweed instead of barley.”
The words of Job are ended.
