21 Entonces Job respondió:
2 «El mejor consuelo que me pueden dar
es escuchar bien lo que voy a decir.
3 Escúchenme con paciencia
y después de que haya terminado,
se pueden burlar de mí.
4 ¿Es que acaso me estoy quejando con un ser humano?
¿Por qué no debo perder la paciencia?
5 Mírenme y asómbrense,
llénense de terror.
6 Cuando pienso en todo lo que me sucedió,
me inquieto y me estremezco,
siento miedo y mi cuerpo tiembla.
7 ¿Por qué la gente mala sigue con vida?
¿Por qué disfrutan de larga vida y todo les sale bien?
8 Ven a sus hijos crecer y establecerse
y hasta conocen a sus nietos.
9 Sus casas son seguras y libres de cualquier temor.
Dios no los castiga.
10 Sus toros se aparean bien;
las crías de sus vacas no mueren al nacer.
11 Mandan a sus hijos a que salgan a jugar, como ovejas.
Sus hijos disfrutan jugando.
12 »La gente mala toca el tambor y la lira,
y celebran al sonido de la música.
13 Disfrutan de prosperidad y alegría toda su vida.
Luego descienden tranquilamente al lugar de los muertos.
14 Le dicen a Dios: “¡Aléjate de nosotros!
No queremos seguir tus caminos.
15 ¿Qué es el Todopoderoso para que tengamos que rendirle culto?
¿Qué ganamos si le oramos a él?”
16 Ellos creen que su prosperidad depende de ellos,
pero yo no pienso así.
17 »Pero, ¿con qué frecuencia se apaga la lámpara de los malos?
¿Qué tantas calamidades sufren ellos?
¿Cuándo se enoja Dios con ellos y los castiga?
18 ¿Es común verlos a ellos arrastrados
como paja que se lleva el viento,
o como paja que se lleva un torbellino?
19 Ustedes dirán: “Dios castiga a los hijos
por los pecados de sus padres”.
Pero yo digo que Dios debería castigar
al que peca para que aprenda.
20 Que él mismo vea su propia destrucción
y sienta la ira del Todopoderoso.
21 Después de muerto,
¿qué le puede importar la familia que dejó al morir?
22 »Aunque en realidad, ¿quién puede darle lecciones a Dios?
Él juzga hasta a los que están en lo más alto.
23 Este murió gozando de prosperidad,
en paz y comodidad.

29 ¿No les han preguntado ustedes a los viajeros?
¿No han reconocido las pruebas que ellos dan?
Ellos confirman
30 que el perverso se libra de la calamidad,
y que los malos sobreviven el día de la ira.
31 ¿Quién le reclama al perverso por sus malas costumbres?
¿Quién le da su merecido por lo que hace?
32 Lo llevan a enterrar,
y un guardia cuida su tumba.
33 Una gran multitud va adelante y atrás del cortejo,
y hasta la tierra donde lo entierran parece agradable.
34 ¿Cómo, entonces, me van a consolar ustedes con palabras vacías?

21 Job le respondió a Zofar:
2 «Para mí sería un gran consuelo
que me prestaran atención.
3 Tengan paciencia mientras hablo,
y una vez que haya terminado,
podrán reírse si quieren.
4 »Si he perdido la paciencia
es porque mi reclamo
es contra Dios.
5 Pónganme atención,
y quedarán asombrados.
6-7 ¡No entiendo por qué los malvados
viven tanto y ganan tanto dinero!
Mientras más pienso en esto,
más me asusto y me da escalofríos.
8-9 Como Dios nunca los castiga,
no tienen miedo de nada;
viven tranquilos en sus casas,
viendo progresar a sus hijos
y crecer a sus nietos.
10 Sus toros y sus vacas
tienen muchos terneros;
¡ninguno muere antes de tiempo!
11 Sus niños corren y juegan
como ovejas en un prado;
12 cantan y bailan alegres
al son de arpas, flautas y tambores.
13 Durante toda su vida,
los malvados gozan de gran bienestar,
y al final tienen una muerte tranquila.
14 Se mantienen alejados de Dios,
porque no quieren obedecerlo.
15 No creen estar obligados
a respetar al Dios todopoderoso,
ni a dirigirle sus oraciones.
16 Se creen dueños de su felicidad,
pero yo no pienso como ellos.
17 »Nunca se ha visto que los malvados
mueran antes de tiempo.
Nunca se ha visto que sobre ellos
haya venido algún desastre.
Nunca Dios se ha enojado tanto,
como para hacerlos sufrir.
18 Nunca se ha visto que el viento
se los lleve como a la paja.
19 ¡No me vengan con que el castigo
va a ser sólo para sus hijos!
Mejor que Dios los castigue a ellos,
para que aprendan una lección.
20 ¡Que sufran los malvados
su propia destrucción!
¡Que sufran en carne propia
el enojo del Todopoderoso!
21 Les queda ya poco tiempo de vida;
¿qué les pueden importar
las viudas y huérfanos que dejan?
22 »A Dios nadie le enseña nada;
él es el juez de todos,
¡aun de la gente más importante!
23-24 Algunos mueren en plena juventud,
gordos y llenos de vida.
25 Otros mueren amargados
y sin haber disfrutado de nada,
26 ¡pero unos y otros mueren,
y en la tumba se llenan de gusanos!
27 »Me imagino lo que piensan:
ustedes quieren hacerme daño.
28 De seguro se preguntan:
“¿Dónde quedaron los palacios
que tenía ese rico malvado?”
29 ¡Pregunten a los viajeros!
¡Presten atención a sus relatos!
30 Los malvados siempre se libran
del castigo de Dios.
31 Nunca nadie los reprende,
nunca nadie les da su merecido;
32-33 y cuando se mueren,
mucha gente va al entierro.
Luego hacen guardia en su tumba,
¡y la tierra los recibe con cariño!
34 »¿Y todavía esperan consolarme
con sus palabras sin sentido?

Job Replies: The Wicked Do Prosper
21 Then Job answered and said:
2 (A)“Keep listening to my words,
and let this be your comfort.
3 Bear with me, and I will speak,
and after I have spoken, (B)mock on.
4 As for me, is my (C)complaint against man?
Why should I not be impatient?
5 Look at me and be appalled,
and (D)lay your hand over your mouth.
6 When I remember, I am dismayed,
and shuddering seizes my flesh.
7 (E)Why do the wicked live,
reach old age, and grow mighty in power?
8 Their (F)offspring are established in their presence,
and their descendants before their eyes.
9 Their houses are (G)safe from fear,
and (H)no rod of God is upon them.
10 Their bull breeds without fail;
their cow calves and (I)does not miscarry.
11 They send out their (J)little boys like a flock,
and their children dance.
12 They sing to (K)the tambourine and (L)the lyre
and rejoice to the sound of (M)the pipe.
13 They (N)spend their days in prosperity,
and in (O)peace they go down to (P)Sheol.
14 They say to God, (Q)‘Depart from us!
We do not desire the knowledge of your ways.
15 (R)What is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
And what (S)profit do we get if we pray to him?’
16 Behold, is not their prosperity in their hand?
(T)The counsel of the wicked is far from me.
17 “How often is it that (U)the lamp of the wicked is put out?
That their calamity comes upon them?
That God[a] distributes pains in his anger?
18 That they are like (V)straw before the wind,
and like (W)chaff that the storm carries away?
19 You say, ‘God (X)stores up their iniquity for their (Y)children.’
Let him pay it out to them, that they may (Z)know it.
20 Let their own eyes see their destruction,
and let them (AA)drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
21 For what do they care for their houses after them,
when (AB)the number of their months is cut off?
22 (AC)Will any teach God knowledge,
seeing that he (AD)judges those who are on high?
23 One dies in his full vigor,
being wholly at ease and secure,
24 his pails[b] full of milk
and (AE)the marrow of his bones moist.
25 Another dies in (AF)bitterness of soul,
never having tasted of prosperity.
26 They (AG)lie down alike in the dust,
and (AH)the worms cover them.
27 “Behold, I know your thoughts
and your schemes to wrong me.
28 For you say, (AI)‘Where is the house of the prince?
Where is (AJ)the tent in which the wicked lived?’
29 Have you not asked those who travel the roads,
and do you not accept their testimony
30 that (AK)the evil man is spared in the day of calamity,
that he is rescued in the day of wrath?
31 Who declares his way (AL)to his face,
and who (AM)repays him for what he has done?
32 When he is (AN)carried to the grave,
watch is kept over his tomb.
33 (AO)The clods of the valley are sweet to him;
(AP)all mankind follows after him,
and those who go before him are innumerable.
34 How then will you comfort me with empty nothings?
There is nothing left of your answers but falsehood.”

2 “Listen carefully to my words;(A)
let this be the consolation you give me.(B)
3 Bear with me while I speak,
and after I have spoken, mock on.(C)
4 “Is my complaint(D) directed to a human being?
Why should I not be impatient?(E)
5 Look at me and be appalled;
clap your hand over your mouth.(F)
6 When I think about this, I am terrified;(G)
trembling seizes my body.(H)
7 Why do the wicked live on,
growing old and increasing in power?(I)
8 They see their children established around them,
their offspring before their eyes.(J)
9 Their homes are safe and free from fear;(K)
the rod of God is not on them.(L)
10 Their bulls never fail to breed;
their cows calve and do not miscarry.(M)
11 They send forth their children as a flock;(N)
their little ones dance about.
12 They sing to the music of timbrel and lyre;(O)
they make merry to the sound of the pipe.(P)
13 They spend their years in prosperity(Q)

14 Yet they say to God, ‘Leave us alone!(T)
We have no desire to know your ways.(U)
15 Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
What would we gain by praying to him?’(V)
16 But their prosperity is not in their own hands,
so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.(W)
17 “Yet how often is the lamp of the wicked snuffed out?(X)
How often does calamity(Y) come upon them,
the fate God allots in his anger?(Z)
18 How often are they like straw before the wind,
like chaff(AA) swept away(AB) by a gale?(AC)
19 It is said, ‘God stores up the punishment of the wicked for their children.’(AD)
Let him repay the wicked, so that they themselves will experience it!(AE)
20 Let their own eyes see their destruction;(AF)
let them drink(AG) the cup of the wrath of the Almighty.(AH)
21 For what do they care about the families they leave behind(AI)
when their allotted months(AJ) come to an end?(AK)
22 “Can anyone teach knowledge to God,(AL)
since he judges even the highest?(AM)
23 One person dies in full vigor,(AN)
completely secure and at ease,(AO)
24 well nourished(AP) in body,[b]
bones(AQ) rich with marrow.(AR)
25 Another dies in bitterness of soul,(AS)
never having enjoyed anything good.
26 Side by side they lie in the dust,(AT)
and worms(AU) cover them both.(AV)
27 “I know full well what you are thinking,
the schemes by which you would wrong me.
28 You say, ‘Where now is the house of the great,(AW)
the tents where the wicked lived?’(AX)
29 Have you never questioned those who travel?
Have you paid no regard to their accounts—
30 that the wicked are spared from the day of calamity,(AY)
that they are delivered from[c] the day of wrath?(AZ)
31 Who denounces their conduct to their face?
Who repays them for what they have done?(BA)
32 They are carried to the grave,
and watch is kept over their tombs.(BB)
33 The soil in the valley is sweet to them;(BC)
everyone follows after them,
and a countless throng goes[d] before them.(BD)
