21 Y respondió Job, y dijo:
2 Oíd atentamente mi palabra, y sea esto por vuestros consuelos.
3 Soportadme, y yo hablaré; y después que hubiere hablado, escarneced.
4 ¿Por ventura quejo a algún hombre? Y si es así ¿por qué no se ha de angustiar mi espíritu?
5 Miradme, y espantaos, y poned la mano sobre la boca.
6 Aun yo mismo, cuando me acuerdo, me asombro, y toma temblor mi carne.
7 ¿Por qué viven los impíos, y se envejecen, y aún crecen en riquezas?
8 Su simiente con ellos, compuesta delante de ellos; y sus renuevos delante de sus ojos.
9 Sus casas seguras de temor, ni hay azote de Dios sobre ellos.
10 Sus vacas conciben, no abortan; paren sus vacas, y no malogran su cría.
11 Salen sus chiquitos como manada de ovejas, y sus hijos andan saltando.
12 Al son de tamboril y cítara saltan, y se regocijan al son del órgano.
13 Gastan sus días en bien, y en un momento descienden al Seol.
14 Dicen pues a Dios: Apártate de nosotros, que no queremos el conocimiento de tus caminos.
15 ¿Quién es el Todopoderoso, para que le sirvamos? ¿Y de qué nos aprovechará que oremos a él?
16 He aquí que su bien no está en manos de ellos; el consejo de los impíos lejos esté de mí.
17 ¶ ¡Oh cuántas veces el candil de los impíos es apagado, y viene sobre ellos su contrición, y con su ira Dios les reparte dolores!
18 Serán como la paja delante del viento, y como el tamo que arrebata el torbellino.
19 Dios guardará para los hijos de ellos su violencia; y le dará su pago, para que conozca.
20 Verán sus ojos su quebranto, y beberá de la ira del Todopoderoso.
21 Porque ¿qué deleite tendrá él de su casa después de sí, siendo cortado el número de sus meses?
22 ¿Por ventura enseñará él a Dios conocimiento, juzgando él las alturas?
23 Este morirá en la fortaleza de su hermosura, todo quieto y pacífico.
24 Sus senos están llenos de leche, y sus huesos serán regados de tuétano.
25 Y este otro morirá en amargura de ánimo, y no habiendo comido jamás con gusto.
26 Igualmente yacerán ellos en el polvo, y gusanos los cubrirán.
27 He aquí, yo conozco vuestros pensamientos, y las imaginaciones que contra mí forjáis.
28 Porque decís: ¿Qué es de la casa del príncipe, y qué de la tienda de las moradas de los impíos?
29 ¿No habéis preguntado a los que pasan por los caminos, por cuyas señas no negaréis?
30 Que el malo es guardado para el día de la destrucción, para el día de las iras son llevados.
31 ¿Quién le denunciará en su cara su camino? Y de lo que él hizo, ¿quién le dará el pago?
32 Porque él ya será llevado a los sepulcros, y en la tumba permanecerá.
33 Los terrones del arroyo le serán ya dulces; y tras de él será llevado todo hombre, y antes de él han ido innumerables.
34 ¿Cómo, pues, me consoláis en vano, dado que vuestras respuestas quedan por mentira?

Răspunsul lui Iov
21 Iov a luat cuvântul şi a zis:
2 „Ascultaţi, ascultaţi cuvintele mele,
daţi-mi măcar această mângâiere.
3 Lăsaţi-mă să vorbesc, vă rog,
şi, după ce voi vorbi, veţi putea să vă bateţi(A) joc.
4 Oare împotriva unui om se îndreaptă plângerea mea?
Şi pentru ce n-aş fi nerăbdător?
5 Priviţi-mă, miraţi-vă
şi puneţi mâna(B) la gură.
6 Când mă gândesc, mă înspăimânt
şi un tremur îmi apucă tot trupul:
7 Pentru ce trăiesc(C) cei răi?
Pentru ce îi vezi îmbătrânind şi sporind în putere?
8 Sămânţa lor se întăreşte cu ei şi în faţa lor,
odraslele lor propăşesc sub ochii lor.
9 În casele lor domneşte pacea, fără umbră de frică;
nuiaua(D) lui Dumnezeu nu vine să-i lovească.
10 Taurii lor sunt plini de vlagă şi prăsitori,
juncanele lor zămislesc şi nu leapădă(E).
11 Îşi lasă copiii să se împrăştie ca nişte oi,
şi copiii se zbenguie în jurul lor.
12 Cântă cu sunet de tobă şi de harpă,
se desfătează cu sunete de caval.
13 Îşi petrec zilele(F) în fericire
şi se pogoară într-o clipă în Locuinţa morţilor.
14 Şi totuşi(G) ziceau lui Dumnezeu: ‘Pleacă de la noi.
Nu voim să cunoaştem căile Tale.
15 Ce(H) este Cel Atotputernic, ca să-I slujim?
Ce vom(I) câştiga dacă-I vom înălţa rugăciuni?’
16 Ce, nu sunt ei în stăpânirea fericirii? –
Departe de mine sfatul celor(J) răi! –
17 Dar de multe ori se întâmplă să li se stingă(K) candela,
să vină sărăcia peste ei,
să le dea şi lor Dumnezeu partea lor de dureri în mânia Lui,
18 să fie ca paiul(L) luat de vânt,
ca pleava luată de vârtej?
19 Veţi zice că pentru fiii Săi păstrează Dumnezeu(M) pedeapsa.
Dar pe el, pe nelegiuit, ar trebui să-l pedepsească Dumnezeu, ca să simtă;
20 el ar trebui să-şi vadă nimicirea,
el ar trebui să bea(N) mânia Celui Atotputernic.
21 Căci ce-i pasă lui ce va fi de casa lui după el,
când numărul lunilor i s-a împlinit?
22 Oare pe Dumnezeu Îl vom învăţa(O) minte,
pe El, care cârmuieşte duhurile cereşti?
23 Unul moare în mijlocul propăşirii, păcii şi fericirii,
24 cu coapsele încărcate de grăsime
şi măduva oaselor plină de suc.
25 Altul moare cu amărăciunea în suflet,
fără să se fi bucurat de vreo fericire,
26 şi amândoi adorm(P) în ţărână,
amândoi sunt mâncaţi de viermi.
27 Ştiu eu bine care sunt gândurile voastre,
ce judecăţi nedrepte rostiţi asupra mea.
28 Voi ziceţi: ‘Unde(Q) este casa apăsătorului?
Unde este cortul în care locuiau nelegiuiţii?’
29 Dar, ce, n-aţi întrebat pe călători
şi nu ştiţi ce istorisesc ei?
30 Cum, în ziua nenorocirii, cel rău(R) este cruţat
şi, în ziua mâniei, el scapă.
31 Cine îl mustră în faţă pentru purtarea(S) lui?
Cine îi răsplăteşte tot ce a făcut?
32 Este dus la groapă
şi i se pune o strajă la mormânt.
33 Bulgării din vale îi sunt mai uşori,
căci toţi oamenii(T) merg după el
şi o mulţime îi merge înainte.
34 Pentru ce dar îmi daţi mângâieri deşarte?
Ce mai rămâne din răspunsurile voastre decât viclenie?”

21 Then Job replied:
2 “Listen carefully to my words;(A)
let this be the consolation you give me.(B)
3 Bear with me while I speak,
and after I have spoken, mock on.(C)
4 “Is my complaint(D) directed to a human being?
Why should I not be impatient?(E)
5 Look at me and be appalled;
clap your hand over your mouth.(F)
6 When I think about this, I am terrified;(G)
trembling seizes my body.(H)
7 Why do the wicked live on,
growing old and increasing in power?(I)
8 They see their children established around them,
their offspring before their eyes.(J)
9 Their homes are safe and free from fear;(K)
the rod of God is not on them.(L)
10 Their bulls never fail to breed;
their cows calve and do not miscarry.(M)
11 They send forth their children as a flock;(N)
their little ones dance about.
12 They sing to the music of timbrel and lyre;(O)
they make merry to the sound of the pipe.(P)
13 They spend their years in prosperity(Q)
and go down to the grave(R) in peace.[a](S)
14 Yet they say to God, ‘Leave us alone!(T)
We have no desire to know your ways.(U)
15 Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
What would we gain by praying to him?’(V)
16 But their prosperity is not in their own hands,
so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.(W)
17 “Yet how often is the lamp of the wicked snuffed out?(X)
How often does calamity(Y) come upon them,
the fate God allots in his anger?(Z)
18 How often are they like straw before the wind,
like chaff(AA) swept away(AB) by a gale?(AC)
19 It is said, ‘God stores up the punishment of the wicked for their children.’(AD)
Let him repay the wicked, so that they themselves will experience it!(AE)
20 Let their own eyes see their destruction;(AF)
let them drink(AG) the cup of the wrath of the Almighty.(AH)
21 For what do they care about the families they leave behind(AI)
when their allotted months(AJ) come to an end?(AK)
22 “Can anyone teach knowledge to God,(AL)
since he judges even the highest?(AM)
23 One person dies in full vigor,(AN)
completely secure and at ease,(AO)
24 well nourished(AP) in body,[b]
bones(AQ) rich with marrow.(AR)
25 Another dies in bitterness of soul,(AS)
never having enjoyed anything good.
26 Side by side they lie in the dust,(AT)
and worms(AU) cover them both.(AV)
27 “I know full well what you are thinking,
the schemes by which you would wrong me.
28 You say, ‘Where now is the house of the great,(AW)
the tents where the wicked lived?’(AX)
29 Have you never questioned those who travel?
Have you paid no regard to their accounts—
30 that the wicked are spared from the day of calamity,(AY)
that they are delivered from[c] the day of wrath?(AZ)
31 Who denounces their conduct to their face?
Who repays them for what they have done?(BA)
32 They are carried to the grave,
and watch is kept over their tombs.(BB)
33 The soil in the valley is sweet to them;(BC)
everyone follows after them,
and a countless throng goes[d] before them.(BD)
