(A)Why do the wicked live and become old,
Yes, become mighty in power?

(A)For I was envious of the boastful,
When I saw the prosperity of the (B)wicked.

For there are no [a]pangs in their death,
But their strength is firm.
(C)They are not in trouble as other men,
Nor are they plagued like other men.
Therefore pride serves as their necklace;
Violence covers them (D)like a garment.
(E)Their [b]eyes bulge with abundance;
They have more than heart could wish.
(F)They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression;
They (G)speak [c]loftily.
They set their mouth (H)against the heavens,
And their tongue walks through the earth.

10 Therefore his people return here,
(I)And waters of a full cup are drained by them.
11 And they say, (J)“How does God know?
And is there knowledge in the Most High?”
12 Behold, these are the ungodly,
Who are always at ease;
They increase in riches.

Jeremiah’s Question

12 Righteous (A)are You, O Lord, when I plead with You;
Yet let me talk with You about Your judgments.
(B)Why does the way of the wicked prosper?
Why are those happy who deal so treacherously?
You have planted them, yes, they have taken root;
They grow, yes, they bear fruit.
(C)You are near in their mouth
But far from their [a]mind.

But You, O Lord, (D)know me;
You have seen me,
And You have (E)tested my heart toward You.
Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter,
And prepare them for (F)the day of slaughter.

13 You are of purer eyes than to behold evil,

(A)with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and (B)the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.”

So he carried me away in the Spirit (C)into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting (D)on a scarlet beast which was full of (E)names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. The woman (F)was arrayed in purple and scarlet, (G)and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, (H)having in her hand a golden cup (I)full of abominations and the filthiness of [a]her fornication.

Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The (A)dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads (B)as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And (C)all the world marveled and followed the beast. So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, (D)“Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?”

And he was given (E)a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to [a]continue for (F)forty-two months. Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, (G)His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. It was granted to him (H)to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And (I)authority was given him over every [b]tribe, tongue, and nation.

They catch them in their net,

Therefore they rejoice and are glad.
16 Therefore (A)they sacrifice to their net,
And burn incense to their dragnet;
Because by them their share is [a]sumptuous
And their food plentiful.
