20 Then Sophar the Naamathite answered, and said:
2 Therefore various thoughts succeed one another in me, and my mind is hurried away to different things.
3 The doctrine with which thou reprovest me, I will hear, and the spirit of my understanding shall answer for me.
4 This I know from the beginning, since man was placed upon the earth,
5 That the praise of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment.
6 If his pride mount up even to heaven, and his head touch the clouds:
7 In the end he shall be destroyed like a dunghill, and they that has seen him shall say: Where is he?
8 As a dream that fleeth away he shall not be found, he shall pass as a vision of the night:
9 The eyes that had seen him, shall see him no more, neither shall his place any more behold him.
10 His children shall be oppressed with want, and his hands shall render him his sorrow.
11 His bones shall be filled with the vices of his youth, and they shall sleep with him in the dust.
12 For when evil shall be sweet in his mouth, he will hide it under his tongue.
13 He will spare it, and not leave it, and will hide it in his throat.
14 His bread in his belly shall be turned into the gall of asps within him.
15 The riches which he hath swallowed; he shall vomit up, and God shall draw them out of his belly.
16 He shall suck the head of asps, and the viper's tongue shall kill him.
17 (Let him not see the streams of the river, the brooks of honey and of butter.)
18 He shall be punished for all that he did, and yet shall not be consumed: according to the multitude of his devices so also shall he suffer.
19 Because he broke in and stripped the poor: he hath violently taken away a house which he did not build.
20 And yet his belly was not filled: and when he hath the things he coveted, he shall not be able to possess them.
21 There was nothing left of his meat, and therefore nothing shall continue of his goods:
22 When he shall be filled, he shall be straitened, he shall burn, and every sorrow shall fall upon him.
23 May his belly be filled, that God may send forth the wrath of his indignation upon him, and rain down his war upon him.
24 He shall flee from weapons of iron, and shall fall upon a bow of brass.
25 The sword is drawn out, and cometh forth from its scabbard, and glittereth in his bitterness: the terrible ones shall go and come upon him.
26 All darkness is hid in his secret places: a fire that is not kindled shall devour him, he shall be afflicted when left in his tabernacle.
27 The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, and the earth shall rise up against him.
28 The offspring of his house shall be exposed, he shall be pulled down in the day of God's wrath.
29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the inheritance of his doings from the Lord.

20 Entonces respondió Zofar naamatita, y dijo:
2 Por esto mis pensamientos me hacen responder[a],
a causa de mi inquietud interior[b].
3 He escuchado la reprensión que me insulta(A),
y el espíritu de mi entendimiento me hace responder.
4 ¿Acaso sabes esto, que desde la antigüedad(B),
desde que el hombre fue puesto sobre la tierra,
5 es breve el júbilo de los malvados,
y un instante dura la alegría del impío(C)?
6 Aunque su presunción llegue[c] a los cielos,
y su cabeza toque las nubes(D),
7 como su propio estiércol perece para siempre(E);
los que lo han visto dirán: «¿Dónde está(F)?».
8 Huye como un sueño(G), y no lo pueden encontrar,
y como visión nocturna es ahuyentado(H).
9 El ojo que lo veía, ya no lo ve(I),
y su lugar no lo contempla más(J).
10 Sus hijos(K) favorecen a[d] los pobres,
y sus manos devuelven sus riquezas(L).
11 Sus huesos están llenos de vigor juvenil,
mas con él en el polvo yacen(M).
12 Aunque el mal sea dulce en su boca(N),
y lo oculte bajo su lengua,
13 (O)aunque lo desee[e] y no lo deje ir,
sino que lo retenga en su paladar,
14 con todo la comida en sus entrañas se transforma
en veneno[f] de cobras dentro de él.
15 Traga riquezas,
pero las vomitará;
de su vientre se las hará echar Dios(P).
16 Chupa veneno de cobras,
lengua de víbora(Q) lo mata.
17 No mira a los arroyos,
a los ríos que fluyen miel y cuajada(R).
18 Devuelve lo que ha ganado,
no lo puede tragar(S);
en cuanto a las riquezas de su comercio,
no las puede disfrutar.
19 Pues ha oprimido y abandonado a los pobres(T);
se ha apoderado de una casa que no construyó.
20 Porque no conoció sosiego en su interior[g],
no retiene nada(U) de lo que desea.
21 Nada le quedó por devorar[h],
por eso no dura su prosperidad(V).
22 En la plenitud de su abundancia estará en estrechez;
la mano de todo el que sufre vendrá contra él(W).
23 Cuando llene su vientre,
Dios enviará contra él el ardor de su ira(X)
y la hará llover sobre él mientras come[i](Y).
24 Tal vez huya(Z) del arma de hierro,
pero el arco de bronce lo atravesará.
25 La saeta lo traspasa y sale por[j] su espalda,
y la punta relumbrante por[k] su hiel(AA).
Vienen sobre él terrores(AB),
26 completas tinieblas(AC) están reservadas para sus tesoros;
fuego no atizado lo devorará(AD),
y consumirá al que quede en su tienda.
27 Los cielos revelarán su iniquidad,
y la tierra se levantará contra él(AE).
28 Las riquezas de su casa se perderán(AF);
serán arrasadas en el día de su ira[l](AG).
29 Esta es la porción de Dios para el hombre impío,
y la herencia decretada por Dios para él(AH).

20 Then (A)Zophar the Naamathite answered and said:
2 “Therefore my anxious thoughts make me answer,
Because of the turmoil within me.
3 I have heard the rebuke [a]that reproaches me,
And the spirit of my understanding causes me to answer.
4 “Do you not know this of (B)old,
Since man was placed on earth,
5 (C)That the triumphing of the wicked is short,
And the joy of the hypocrite is but for a (D)moment?
6 (E)Though his haughtiness mounts up to the heavens,
And his head reaches to the clouds,
7 Yet he will perish forever like his own refuse;
Those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’
8 He will fly away (F)like a dream, and not be found;
Yes, he (G)will be chased away like a vision of the night.
9 The eye that saw him will see him no more,
Nor will his place behold him anymore.
10 His children will seek the favor of the poor,
And his hands will restore his wealth.
11 His bones are full of (H)his youthful vigor,
(I)But it will lie down with him in the dust.
12 “Though evil is sweet in his mouth,
And he hides it under his tongue,
13 Though he spares it and does not forsake it,
But still keeps it in his [b]mouth,

15 He swallows down riches
And vomits them up again;
God casts them out of his belly.
16 He will suck the poison of cobras;

18 He will restore that for which he labored,
And will not swallow it down;
From the proceeds of business
He will get no enjoyment.

20 “Because(K) he knows no quietness in his [d]heart,
He will not save anything he desires.
21 Nothing is left for him to eat;
Therefore his well-being will not last.
22 In his self-sufficiency he will be in distress;
Every hand of [e]misery will come against him.
23 When he is about to fill his stomach,
God will cast on him the fury of His wrath,
And will rain it on him while he is eating.
24 (L)He will flee from the iron weapon;
A bronze bow will pierce him through.
25 It is drawn, and comes out of the body;
Yes, (M)the glittering point comes out of his [f]gall.
(N)Terrors come upon him;
26 Total darkness is reserved for his treasures.
(O)An unfanned fire will consume him;
It shall go ill with him who is left in his tent.
27 The heavens will reveal his iniquity,
And the earth will rise up against him.
28 The increase of his house will depart,
And his goods will flow away in the day of His (P)wrath.
29 (Q)This is the portion from God for a wicked man,
The heritage appointed to him by God.”

Het antwoord van Zofar
20 Toen antwoordde Zofar hem:
2 Nu kan ik toch echt niet langer zwijgen.
Het wordt hoog tijd dat ik zeg wat ik ervan vind.
3 Want je hebt me zwaar beledigd met je woorden.
Maar ik zal je een verstandig antwoord geven.
4 Je weet toch wel hoe het altijd is geweest?
Hoe het is sinds er mensen bestaan?
5 Je weet het toch:
de blijdschap van iemand die zich niets van God aantrekt,
duurt maar kort.
Na een ogenblik is zijn vreugde alweer voorbij.
6 Al is hij nog zo trots
en loopt hij met zijn neus in de lucht,
7 toch gaat hij uiteindelijk net als mest de kuil in.
De mensen kijken zoekend rond en vragen:
"Waar is hij toch gebleven?"
8 Net zoals een droom verdwijnt als je wakker wordt,
zo is ook hij zomaar verdwenen.
9 Plotseling is hij er niet meer.
De mensen met wie hij leefde, zien hem nooit meer terug.
10 Zijn zonen moeten zelfs bij arme mensen gaan bedelen.
Want met eigen handen heeft hij al zijn oneerlijk verdiende geld terug moeten geven.
11 Ook al was zijn lichaam nog sterk en vol kracht,
toch ligt hij plotseling in het graf.
12 Zo iemand geniet van het kwaad zoals je geniet van lekkers.
Hij laat het smelten in zijn mond.
13 Hij slikt het niet gelijk in, maar zuigt er lang op,
om er zo lang mogelijk van te genieten.
14 Maar als hij het eenmaal inslikt,
verandert het in zijn buik in vergif en moet hij braken.
15 Net zo heeft hij rijkdom opgeslokt,
maar hij zal alles weer moeten uitspugen.
God perst alles uit zijn maag omhoog.
16 Want oneerlijk verdiende rijkdom is als opgegeten vergif:
het zal hem doden.
17 Hij zal niet genieten van de overvloed
aan room en honing.
18 Wat hij met hard werken heeft verdiend, zal hij moeten teruggeven,
als lekker eten dat hij niet kan binnenhouden.
Alles wat hij met zijn handel heeft verdiend, raakt hij weer kwijt.
19 Hij heeft arme mensen slecht behandeld.
Hij heeft hen aan hun lot overgelaten.
Hij heeft niet zelf een huis gebouwd,
maar het huis van een ander genomen.
20 Maar omdat hij nooit tevreden was
en altijd maar meer wilde hebben,
zal hem niets van zijn schatten overblijven.
21 Op een dag heeft hij zelfs niets meer te eten.
Niemand zal nog proberen iets bij hem te roven.
22 Met de rijkdom is ook de angst gekomen.
Hij wordt bedreigd door iedereen die hij uitgezogen heeft.
23 Op het moment dat hij denkt rustig van zijn rijkdom te kunnen genieten,
stort God zijn straf over hem uit.
24 Als het hem lukt om te ontsnappen aan het zwaard,
zal hij neergeschoten worden met een ijzeren boog.
25 De pijl doorboort zijn rug en komt er bij zijn buik weer uit.
De glinsterende punt komt bij zijn darmen naar buiten.
Doodsangst overvalt hem.
26 Alle ellende wordt over hem uitgestort.
Zijn schatten verdwijnen als sneeuw voor de zon
en het loopt slecht af met alles en iedereen in zijn huis.
27 De hemel laat aan iedereen zien dat hij een slecht mens is.
De aarde wordt zijn vijand.
28 Alles wat hij in zijn huis bewaarde,
wordt door anderen meegenomen.
Het wordt weggehaald op de dag dat God hem straft voor zijn oneerlijkheid.
29 Dat is wat God doet met de mensen die zich niets van Hem aantrekken.
Dat is de straf die God voor hen heeft weggelegd.
