Zophar's Second Speech
Your Words Are Disturbing
20 Zophar from Naamah[a] said:
2 Your words are disturbing;
now I must speak.
3 You have accused
and insulted me,
and reason requires a reply.
4 Since the time of creation,
everyone has known
5 that sinful people are happy
for only a while.
6 Though their pride and power
may reach to the sky,
7 they will disappear like dust,
and those who knew them
will wonder what happened.
8 (A) They will be forgotten
like a dream
9 and vanish from the sight
of family and friends.
10 Their children will have to repay
what the parents took
from the poor.
11 Indeed, the wicked will die
and go to their graves
in the prime of life.
Sinners Love the Taste of Sin
12 Sinners love the taste of sin;
they relish every bite
13 and swallow it slowly.
14 But their food will turn sour
and poison their stomachs.
15 Then God will make them lose
the wealth they gobbled up.
16 They will die from the fangs
of poisonous snakes
17 and never enjoy rivers flowing
with milk and honey.
18 Their hard work will result
in nothing gained,
19 because they cheated the poor
and took their homes.
20 Greedy people want everything
and are never satisfied.[b]
21 But when nothing remains
for them to grab,
they will be nothing.
22 Once they have everything,
distress and despair
will strike them down,
23 and God will make them swallow
his blazing anger.[c]
24 (B) While running from iron spears,
they will be killed
by arrows of bronze,
25 whose shining tips go straight
through their bodies.
They will be trapped by terror,
26 and what they treasure most
will be lost in the dark.
God will send flames
to destroy them in their tents
with all their property.
27 The heavens and the earth
will testify against them,
28 and all their possessions
will be dragged off
when God becomes angry.
29 This is what God has decided
for those who are evil.

20 Тогда ответил Цофар из Наамы:
2 – Заставляют меня ответить мои тревожные мысли,
потому что я объят смятением.
3 Я слышу упрёк, который позорит меня,
и мой ум побуждает меня ответить.
4 Разве ты не знаешь, как было издревле,
с тех пор, как человек был поселён на земле:
5 кратковременно веселье нечестивцев,
и радость безбожников длится лишь миг?
6 Пусть его гордыня достигает небес,
а голова касается облаков,
7 он сгинет навек, как его же нечистоты,
и спросят видевшие его: «Где он?»
8 Как сон улетит он, и его не найти,
как ночное видение пропадёт.
9 Глаз, что видел его, впредь не увидит;
его семья на него не посмотрит.
10 Его дети будут заискивать перед нищими,
сами отдадут всё, что он похитил.
11 Молодецкая сила, что наполняет его тело,
вместе с ним ляжет в прах.
12 Если его устам сладко зло,
и он под языком его скрывает,
13 если он бережёт его и не отпускает,
держит его во рту,
14 то обернётся пища
ядом змеиным в его желудке.
15 Он отрыгнёт богатства, которые проглотил;
Всевышний исторгнет их из его желудка.
16 Он будет сосать змеиный яд,
жало гадюки его убьёт.
17 Не наслаждаться ему потоками,
реками, текущими молоком и мёдом.
18 Он вернёт нажитое, не отведав;
своим доходам от торговли не порадуется.
19 Теснил он бедных и пренебрегал ими;
захватывал дома, которые не строил.
20 Его желудок ненасытен;
его жадность ничего не пропустит.
21 Ничто не спаслось от его обжорства,
поэтому благополучие его не удержится.
22 Среди достатка его настигнет беда;
все руки обиженных поднимутся на него.
23 Когда он свой живот набьёт до отказа,
Всевышний пошлёт на него Свой пылающий гнев,
прольёт дождём на его плоть.
24 Он убежит от железного оружия,
но его пронзит бронзовая стрела.
25 Стрела войдёт в его спину
и пройдёт, сверкая, сквозь его печень.
Двинутся ужасы на него;
26 кромешная тьма ожидает его сокровища.
Пожрёт его никем не зажжённый огонь
и сожжёт последнее, что осталось в его шатре.
27 Его вину небеса откроют,
и восстанет против него земля.
28 Богатство его дома расточится,
в день гнева Всевышнего расплещется, как вода.
29 Вот какая участь нечестивому от Всевышнего,
какой удел определил ему Всевышний.

20 Then Zophar the Naamathite(A) replied:
2 “My troubled thoughts prompt me to answer
because I am greatly disturbed.(B)
3 I hear a rebuke(C) that dishonors me,
and my understanding inspires me to reply.
4 “Surely you know how it has been from of old,(D)
ever since mankind[a] was placed on the earth,
5 that the mirth of the wicked(E) is brief,
the joy of the godless(F) lasts but a moment.(G)
6 Though the pride(H) of the godless person reaches to the heavens(I)
and his head touches the clouds,(J)
7 he will perish forever,(K) like his own dung;
those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’(L)
8 Like a dream(M) he flies away,(N) no more to be found,
banished(O) like a vision of the night.(P)
9 The eye that saw him will not see him again;
his place will look on him no more.(Q)
10 His children(R) must make amends to the poor;
his own hands must give back his wealth.(S)
11 The youthful vigor(T) that fills his bones(U)
will lie with him in the dust.(V)
12 “Though evil(W) is sweet in his mouth
and he hides it under his tongue,(X)
13 though he cannot bear to let it go
and lets it linger in his mouth,(Y)
14 yet his food will turn sour in his stomach;(Z)
it will become the venom of serpents(AA) within him.
15 He will spit out the riches(AB) he swallowed;
God will make his stomach vomit(AC) them up.
16 He will suck the poison(AD) of serpents;
the fangs of an adder will kill him.(AE)
17 He will not enjoy the streams,
the rivers(AF) flowing with honey(AG) and cream.(AH)
18 What he toiled for he must give back uneaten;(AI)
he will not enjoy the profit from his trading.(AJ)
19 For he has oppressed the poor(AK) and left them destitute;(AL)
he has seized houses(AM) he did not build.
20 “Surely he will have no respite from his craving;(AN)
he cannot save himself by his treasure.(AO)
21 Nothing is left for him to devour;
his prosperity will not endure.(AP)
22 In the midst of his plenty, distress will overtake him;(AQ)
the full force of misery will come upon him.(AR)
23 When he has filled his belly,(AS)
God will vent his burning anger(AT) against him
and rain down his blows on him.(AU)
24 Though he flees(AV) from an iron weapon,
a bronze-tipped arrow pierces him.(AW)
25 He pulls it out of his back,
the gleaming point out of his liver.
Terrors(AX) will come over him;(AY)
26 total darkness(AZ) lies in wait for his treasures.
A fire(BA) unfanned will consume him(BB)
and devour what is left in his tent.(BC)
27 The heavens will expose his guilt;
the earth will rise up against him.(BD)
28 A flood will carry off his house,(BE)
rushing waters[b] on the day of God’s wrath.(BF)
29 Such is the fate God allots the wicked,
the heritage appointed for them by God.”(BG)
