20 Entonces Zofar le respondió a Job:
2-3 «Lo que acabo de escuchar
me deja muy confundido.
Es un insulto a mi inteligencia,
y me veo obligado a responderte.
4-5 »Desde que Dios creó al hombre
y lo puso en este mundo,
la alegría de los malvados
no dura mucho tiempo.
Eso lo sabes muy bien.
6 Son tan orgullosos que piensan
que pueden tocar el alto cielo,
7-9 pero no son más que basura,
y como basura desaparecerán;
serán como un sueño que se olvida:
un día se irán para siempre,
y nadie volverá a encontrarlos;
¡sus amigos no volverán a verlos,
ni sabrán qué pasó con ellos!
10-11 La fuerza de su juventud
se irá con ellos al sepulcro,
y sus hijos tendrán que repartir
entre la gente pobre
todas las riquezas que acumularon.
12-13 »Ellos creen que la maldad
es dulce como un caramelo,
y la siguen saboreando,
pues no quieren renunciar a ella.
14-15 Pero la maldad que hoy los alimenta,
mañana será su veneno.
¡Dios los obligará a devolver
todas las riquezas que se robaron!
16 Su maldad es como veneno de víboras,
que acabará por matarlos.
17-19 Se adueñan de casas
que nunca construyeron,
y dejan sin nada a los pobres.
Pero no llegarán a disfrutar
de tanta riqueza y prosperidad,
ni podrán saborear plenamente
lo que sus negocios produzcan.
20-21 »Fueron tan ambiciosos
que nunca estuvieron contentos;
a pesar de tener tanto,
siempre quisieron tener más;
por eso su bienestar
no durará mucho tiempo.
22 Aunque tengan abundancia,
siempre vivirán angustiados;
¡sobre ellos caerá
todo el peso de la desgracia!
23 Mientras estén comiendo y bebiendo,
Dios dará rienda suelta a su enojo
y descargará sus golpes sobre ellos.
24 Si tratan de librarse de una espada,
con un cuchillo los matarán;
25 y cuando quieran sacarse el cuchillo,
se les saldrán los intestinos
y eso los llenará de miedo.
26 Les espera la más negra oscuridad;
un fuego que ningún hombre prendió
acabará con ellos y con sus casas.
27-28 Cuando Dios castigue a los malvados,
no encontrarán quien los defienda.
Una gran inundación vendrá
y sus casas serán destruidas.
29 ¡Así ha decidido Dios
que terminen los malvados!»

20 Then Zophar the Naamathite(A) replied:
2 “My troubled thoughts prompt me to answer
because I am greatly disturbed.(B)
3 I hear a rebuke(C) that dishonors me,
and my understanding inspires me to reply.
4 “Surely you know how it has been from of old,(D)
ever since mankind[a] was placed on the earth,
5 that the mirth of the wicked(E) is brief,
the joy of the godless(F) lasts but a moment.(G)
6 Though the pride(H) of the godless person reaches to the heavens(I)
and his head touches the clouds,(J)
7 he will perish forever,(K) like his own dung;
those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’(L)
8 Like a dream(M) he flies away,(N) no more to be found,
banished(O) like a vision of the night.(P)
9 The eye that saw him will not see him again;
his place will look on him no more.(Q)
10 His children(R) must make amends to the poor;
his own hands must give back his wealth.(S)
11 The youthful vigor(T) that fills his bones(U)
will lie with him in the dust.(V)
12 “Though evil(W) is sweet in his mouth
and he hides it under his tongue,(X)
13 though he cannot bear to let it go
and lets it linger in his mouth,(Y)
14 yet his food will turn sour in his stomach;(Z)
it will become the venom of serpents(AA) within him.
15 He will spit out the riches(AB) he swallowed;
God will make his stomach vomit(AC) them up.
16 He will suck the poison(AD) of serpents;
the fangs of an adder will kill him.(AE)
17 He will not enjoy the streams,
the rivers(AF) flowing with honey(AG) and cream.(AH)
18 What he toiled for he must give back uneaten;(AI)
he will not enjoy the profit from his trading.(AJ)
19 For he has oppressed the poor(AK) and left them destitute;(AL)
he has seized houses(AM) he did not build.
20 “Surely he will have no respite from his craving;(AN)
he cannot save himself by his treasure.(AO)
21 Nothing is left for him to devour;
his prosperity will not endure.(AP)
22 In the midst of his plenty, distress will overtake him;(AQ)
the full force of misery will come upon him.(AR)
23 When he has filled his belly,(AS)
God will vent his burning anger(AT) against him
and rain down his blows on him.(AU)
24 Though he flees(AV) from an iron weapon,
a bronze-tipped arrow pierces him.(AW)
25 He pulls it out of his back,
the gleaming point out of his liver.
Terrors(AX) will come over him;(AY)
26 total darkness(AZ) lies in wait for his treasures.
A fire(BA) unfanned will consume him(BB)
and devour what is left in his tent.(BC)
27 The heavens will expose his guilt;
the earth will rise up against him.(BD)
28 A flood will carry off his house,(BE)
rushing waters[b] on the day of God’s wrath.(BF)
29 Such is the fate God allots the wicked,
the heritage appointed for them by God.”(BG)

Zophar Says, “The Triumph of the Wicked Is Short”
20 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said,
2
“Therefore my disquieting thoughts make me answer,
Because of the uneasiness that is within me.
3
“I have heard the reproof which insults me,
But the spirit of my understanding makes me answer.
4
“Do you not know this from the old days,
Since the time that man was placed on the earth,
5
That the triumphing of the wicked is short,
And the joy of the godless is only for a moment?(A)
6
“Though his pride reaches the heavens
And his head touches the clouds,
7
Yet he perishes forever like his own refuse;
Those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’
8
“He flies away like a dream and cannot be found;
Yes, he is chased away like a vision of the night.
9
“The eye which saw him sees him no longer,
Neither does his [accustomed] place behold him any longer.
10
“His sons favor the poor [and pay his obligations],
And his hands give back his [ill-gotten] wealth.
11
“His bones are full of youthful strength
But it lies down with him in the dust.
12
“Though evil and wickedness are sweet in his mouth
And he hides it under his tongue,
13
Though he desires it and will not let it go
But holds it in his mouth,
14
Yet his food turns [to poison] in his stomach;
It is the venom of vipers within him.
15
“He swallows [his ill-gotten] riches,
But will vomit them up;
God will drive them out of his belly.
16
“He sucks the poison of vipers [which ill-gotten wealth contains];
The viper’s tongue slays him.
17
“He does not look at the rivers,
The flowing streams of honey and butter [to enjoy his wealth].
18
“He gives back what he has labored for and attained
And cannot swallow it [down to enjoy it];
As to the riches of his labor,
He cannot even enjoy them.
19
“For he has oppressed and neglected the poor;
He has violently taken away houses which he did not build.
20
“Because he knew no quietness or calm within him [because of his greed],
He does not retain anything he desires.
21
“There is nothing left of what he devoured;
Therefore his prosperity does not endure.
22
“In the fullness of his excess (great abundance) he will be in trouble;
The hand of everyone who suffers will come against him [he is miserable on every side].
23
“When he fills his belly,
God will send His fierce anger on him
And will rain it upon him while he is eating.(B)
24
“He may flee from the iron weapon,
But the bow of bronze will pierce him through.
25
“The arrow is drawn forth and it comes out of his back [after passing through his body];
Yes, the glittering point comes out of his gall.
Terrors march in upon him;
26
Complete darkness (misfortune) is held in reserve for his treasures.
An unfanned fire will devour him;
It will consume the survivor in his tent.
27
“The heavens will reveal his wickedness and guilt,
And the earth will rise up against him.
28
“The produce and increase of his house will depart [with the victors];
His possessions will be dragged away in the day of God’s wrath.
29
“This is the wicked man’s portion from God,
And the heritage decreed and appointed to him by God.”
