2 And it came to pass, when on a certain day the sons of God came, and stood before the Lord, and Satan came among them, and stood in his sight,
2 That the Lord said to Satan: Whence comest thou? And he answered and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it.
3 And the Lord said to Satan: Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a man simple, and upright, and fearing God, and avoiding evil, and still keeping his innocence? But thou hast moved me against him, that I should afflict him without cause.
4 And Satan answered, and said: Skin for skin, and all that a man hath he will give for his life:
5 But put forth thy hand, and touch his bone and his flesh, and then thou shalt see that he will bless thee to thy face.
6 And the Lord said to Satan: Behold be is in thy hand, but yet save his life.
7 So Satan went forth from the presence Of the Lord, and struck Job with a very grievous ulcer, from the sole of the foot even to the top of his head:
8 And he took a potsherd and scraped the corrupt matter, sitting on a dunghill.
9 And his wife said to him: Dost thou still continue in thy simplicity? bless God and die.
10 And he said to her: Thou hast; spoken like one of the foolish women: if we have received good things at the hand of God, why should we not receive evil? In all these things Job did not sin with his lips.
11 Now when Job's three friends heard all the evil that had befallen him, they came every one from his own place, Alphas the Themanite, and Baldad the Suhite, and Sophar the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment to come together and visit him, and comfort him.
12 And when they had lifted up their eyes afar off, they knew him not, and crying out they wept, and rending their garments they sprinkled dust upon their heads towards heaven.
13 And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no man spoke to him a word: for they saw that his grief was very great.

Jobs hälsa angrips
2 En dag kom Guds söner på nytt fram inför Herren, och Anklagaren var med dem.
2 ”Varifrån kommer du?” frågade Herren honom. ”Från en färd runt jorden”, svarade Anklagaren.
3 ”Har du lagt märke till min tjänare Job?” frågade Herren Anklagaren. ”Det finns ingen annan som han på hela jorden, en god och rättsinnig man som fruktar Gud och inte vill ha något med det onda att göra. Han har bevarat sin integritet, trots att du övertalade mig att utan orsak låta olycka drabba honom.”
4 Anklagaren svarade: ”Försök röra vid hans skinn! En människa ger allt han äger för att rädda sitt liv. 5 Men räck ut din hand och rör vid hans kött och ben, så kommer han att förbanna dig rakt i ansiktet!”
6 ”Gör vad du vill med honom”, svarade Herren. ”Men du måste skona hans liv.”
7 Anklagaren lämnade då Herren, och Job drabbades av fruktansvärda bölder över hela kroppen, från huvud till fot. 8 Då tog Job en lerskärva och skrapade sig med den, medan han satt i aska.
9 Hans hustru sa: ”Håller du fortfarande fast vid din integritet? Förbanna Gud och dö!”
10 Men han svarade henne: ”Du talar som en dåre. Skulle vi bara ta emot det som är gott från Guds hand och aldrig det onda?” Under allt detta sa Job aldrig något syndigt.
Job får besök av några vänner
11 När tre av Jobs vänner fick höra om alla tragedier som drabbat honom, tog de kontakt med varandra och reste till honom för att visa medkänsla och trösta honom. De tre var Elifas från Teman, Bildad från Shuach och Sofar från Naama.
12 De såg honom på avstånd men kände knappt igen honom. Under högljudd gråt rev de då sönder sina mantlar och strödde jord på sina huvuden. 13 Sedan satt de på marken hos honom i sju dagar och sju nätter. Ingen av dem ville säga ett ord till honom, för de insåg att hans lidande var fruktansvärt svårt.

2 On another day the angels[a](A) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them(B) to present himself before him. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”
Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”(C)
3 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.(D) And he still maintains his integrity,(E) though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”(F)
4 “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has(G) for his own life. 5 But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones,(H) and he will surely curse you to your face.”(I)
6 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands;(J) but you must spare his life.”(K)
7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.(L) 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.(M)
9 His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity?(N) Curse God and die!”(O)
10 He replied, “You are talking like a foolish[b] woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”(P)
In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.(Q)
11 When Job’s three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite,(R) Bildad the Shuhite(S) and Zophar the Naamathite,(T) heard about all the troubles that had come upon him, they set out from their homes and met together by agreement to go and sympathize with him and comfort him.(U) 12 When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognize him;(V) they began to weep aloud,(W) and they tore their robes(X) and sprinkled dust on their heads.(Y) 13 Then they sat on the ground(Z) with him for seven days and seven nights.(AA) No one said a word to him,(AB) because they saw how great his suffering was.
