13 Some time later, when his children[a] were celebrating[b] in their oldest[c] brother’s house, 14 a messenger approached Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the female donkeys were grazing nearby 15 when the Sabeans attacked, captured the servants, and killed them with swords. I alone escaped to tell you!”

16 While this messenger[d] was still speaking, another[e] came and announced, “A lightning storm struck[f] and incinerated the flock and the servants while they were eating. I alone escaped to tell you!”

17 While this messenger[g] was still speaking, another[h] came and announced, “The Chaldeans formed three companies, raided the camels, captured the servants, and killed them with swords. Only I alone escaped to tell you.”

18 While this messenger[i] was still speaking, another[j] came and announced, “Your children were celebrating[k] in their oldest[l] brother’s house 19 when a strong wind came straight out of the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house. The Adversary’s Attack on Job’s Possessions

13 And then there was one day when[a] his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their firstborn brother’s house. 14 And a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing, and the female donkeys were feeding beside them.[b] 15 Then[c] the Sabeans attacked,[d] and they took them, and they slew the servants by the edge of the sword.[e] But[f] I escaped, even I alone, to tell you.”

16 While this one was still speaking, another[g] came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens, and it blazed up against the sheep and goats and against the servants, and it consumed them. But I escaped, even I alone, to tell you.”

17 While this one was still speaking, another[h] came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three divisions, and they made a raid on the camels, and they carried them away, and they struck your servants by the edge of the sword,[i] but I escaped, even I alone, to tell you.”

18 At the time[j] this one was speaking, another[k] came and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their firstborn brother’s house. 19 And behold,[l] a great wind came from across the desert, and it struck the four corners of the house so that[m] it fell upon the young people, and they died. But I escaped, even I alone, to tell you.”
