Job 18

Bildad’s Second Speech
18 Then[a] Bildad the Shuhite answered and said,
2 “How long[b] will you[c] hunt for words?[d]
Consider,[e] and afterward we shall speak.
3 Why are we considered as animals?
Why are we taken as[f] stupid in your[g] eyes?
4 “You who are tearing yourself[h] in your[i] anger,
will the earth be forsaken because of you?[j]
Or[k] will the rock be removed from its place?
5 Furthermore,[l] the light of the wicked is put out,
and the flame of his fire will not shine.
6 The light becomes dark in his tent,
and his lamp above him is put out.
7 “His strong steps[m] are shortened,
and his own schemes[n] throw him down,
8 for he is thrust into a net by his feet,
and he walks into a pitfall.
9 A trap seizes him by the heel;
a snare takes hold of him.
10 His rope is hidden in the ground,
and his trap on the path.
11 “Sudden terrors terrify him all around,
and they chase him at his heels.
12 His wealth will become hunger,
and disaster is ready for his stumbling.
13 It consumes parts of his skin;
the firstborn of death consumes his limbs.
14 He is torn from his tent in which he trusted,[o]
and it brought him to the king of terrors.
15 “Nothing[p] remains for him in his tent;
sulfur is scattered upon his dwelling place.
16 His roots dry up below,[q]
and its branches[r] wither away above.[s]
17 His remembrance perishes from the earth,
and there is not a name for him on the street.
18 “They thrust him from light into darkness,
and they drive him out from the world.
19 There is no offspring for him nor[t] a descendant among his people,
and there is not a survivor in his abode.
20 Those of the west are appalled over his fate,[u]
and those of the east are seized with horror.[v]
21 Surely these are the dwellings of the godless,
and this is the dwelling place of him who knows not God.”

Job 18
King James Version
18 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
2 How long will it be ere ye make an end of words? mark, and afterwards we will speak.
3 Wherefore are we counted as beasts, and reputed vile in your sight?
4 He teareth himself in his anger: shall the earth be forsaken for thee? and shall the rock be removed out of his place?
5 Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine.
6 The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out with him.
7 The steps of his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down.
8 For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walketh upon a snare.
9 The gin shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him.
10 The snare is laid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way.
11 Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet.
12 His strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side.
13 It shall devour the strength of his skin: even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength.
14 His confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors.
15 It shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.
16 His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off.
17 His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.
18 He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.
19 He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.
20 They that come after him shall be astonied at his day, as they that went before were affrighted.
21 Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.

18 The further reply of Bildad the Shuhite:
2 “Who are you trying to fool? Speak some sense if you want us to answer! 3 Have we become like animals to you, stupid and dumb? 4 Just because you tear your clothes in anger, is this going to start an earthquake? Shall we all go and hide?
5 “The truth remains that if you do not prosper, it is because you are wicked. And your bright flame shall be put out. 6 There will be darkness in every home where there is wickedness.
7 “The confident stride of the wicked man will be shortened; he will realize his failing strength. 8-9 He walks into traps, and robbers will ambush him. 10 There is a booby trap in every path he takes. 11 He has good cause for fear—his enemy is close behind him!
12 “His vigor is depleted by hunger; calamity stands ready to pounce upon him. 13 His skin is eaten by disease. Death shall devour him. 14 The wealth he trusted in shall reject him, and he shall be brought down to the king of terrors. 15 His home shall disappear beneath a fiery barrage of brimstone. 16 He shall die from the roots up, and all his branches will be lopped off.
17 “All memory of his existence will perish from the earth; no one will remember him. 18 He will be driven out from the kingdom of light into darkness and chased out of the world. 19 He will have neither son nor grandson left, nor any other relatives. 20 Old and young alike will be horrified by his fate. 21 Yes, that is what happens to sinners, to those rejecting God.”
