Job 18
Wycliffe Bible

18 Then Bildad (the) Shuhite answered, and said,

2 Unto what end shalt thou boast with words? Understand thou us first, and so speak we together. (Unto what end shalt thou continue to boast with your words? First listen to us, and then we shall speak together.)

3 Why be we areckoned as beasts, and why have we been (judged) foul before thee?

4 What, or why, losest thou thy soul in thy strong vengeance? Whether the earth shall be forsaken for thee, and hard stones shall be borne over from their place, (just for thee)?

5 Whether the light of a wicked man shall not be quenched; and the flame of his fire shall not shine? (The light of the wicked shall be quenched; and the flame of his fire shall not shine!)

6 Light shall wax dark in his tabernacle; and the lantern, which is on him, shall be quenched. (The light shall grow dark in his tent; and the lantern, which shineth on him, shall be quenched.)

7 The steps of his strength shall be made strait; and his (own) counsel shall cast him down.

8 For he hath sent, or put, his feet into a net; and he goeth in the meshes, or knittings, thereof.

9 His foot shall be holden with a snare; and thirst shall burn out against him.

10 The foot-trap of him is hid in the earth, and his snare is laid on the path. (A foot-trap is hid on the ground for him, and a snare is laid on the path for him.)

11 Dreads shall make him afeared on every side, and shall bewrap his feet. (Terror shall make him afraid on every side, and shall enwrap, or shall bind, his feet.)

12 His strength [shall] be made feeble by hunger; and poverty (shall) assail his ribs.

13 Devour it the fairness of his skin; the first engendered (of) death waste his arms. (Disease shall devour the beauty of his skin; and Death’s first-born shall destroy, or shall eat up, his arms and his legs.)

14 His trust be taken away from his tabernacle; and perishing, as a king, above-tread on him. (He shall be torn away from the safety of his tent; and perishing, or destruction, shall tread all over him, like a king.)

15 The fellows of him that is not, that is, the fellows of a dead man, dwell in his tabernacle; and brimstone be sprinkled in his tabernacle. (The fellows, or friends, of him who is not, that is, the friends of he who is dead, shall live in his tent; and brimstone, or sulphur, shall be sprinkled all around it to ward off evil.)

16 The roots of him be made dry beneath; and be his ripe corn all-broken above. (His roots shall be made dry beneath; and all his branches shall wither above.)

17 His mind perish from the earth; and his name be not made solemn in streets. (His memory shall perish from the earth; and his name shall be forgotten in the streets.)

18 He shall put him out from light into darknesses; and he shall bear him over from the world. (He shall be put out from the light into the darkness; and he shall be carried over from this world into the next.)

19 Neither his seed, neither his kindred, shall be in his people, neither any remnants of them (shall be) left in his countries. (Neither his descendants, nor his kindred, shall be among his own people, nor shall any remnant of them be left in his land.)

20 The last men (of him) shall wonder in his days; and hideousness shall assail the first men. (The people who come after him shall wonder at his day; just as horror assailed those who came before him.)

21 Therefore these be the tabernacles of a wicked man; and this is the place of him, that knoweth not God. (And so such shall be the fate of the wicked; the end, or the place, of those, who do not know God.)

Bildad

18 Then Bildad the Shuhite(A) replied:

2 “When will you end these speeches?(B)
    Be sensible, and then we can talk.
3 Why are we regarded as cattle(C)
    and considered stupid in your sight?(D)
4 You who tear yourself(E) to pieces in your anger,(F)
    is the earth to be abandoned for your sake?
    Or must the rocks be moved from their place?(G)

5 “The lamp of a wicked man is snuffed out;(H)
    the flame of his fire stops burning.(I)
6 The light in his tent(J) becomes dark;(K)
    the lamp beside him goes out.(L)
7 The vigor(M) of his step is weakened;(N)
    his own schemes(O) throw him down.(P)
8 His feet thrust him into a net;(Q)
    he wanders into its mesh.
9 A trap seizes him by the heel;
    a snare(R) holds him fast.(S)
10 A noose(T) is hidden for him on the ground;
    a trap(U) lies in his path.(V)
11 Terrors(W) startle him on every side(X)
    and dog(Y) his every step.
12 Calamity(Z) is hungry(AA) for him;
    disaster(AB) is ready for him when he falls.(AC)
13 It eats away parts of his skin;(AD)
    death’s firstborn devours his limbs.(AE)
14 He is torn from the security of his tent(AF)
    and marched off to the king(AG) of terrors.(AH)
15 Fire resides[a] in his tent;(AI)
    burning sulfur(AJ) is scattered over his dwelling.
16 His roots dry up below(AK)
    and his branches wither above.(AL)
17 The memory of him perishes from the earth;(AM)
    he has no name(AN) in the land.(AO)
18 He is driven from light into the realm of darkness(AP)
    and is banished(AQ) from the world.(AR)
19 He has no offspring(AS) or descendants(AT) among his people,
    no survivor(AU) where once he lived.(AV)
20 People of the west are appalled(AW) at his fate;(AX)
    those of the east are seized with horror.
21 Surely such is the dwelling(AY) of an evil man;(AZ)
    such is the place(BA) of one who does not know God.”(BB)

2 Wie lange wollt ihr doch Jagd auf Worte machen?
Besinnet euch zuerst, redet dann!
3 Warum werden wir dem Vieh gleichgeachtet
und sind so dumm in euren Augen?
4 Du, der sich in seinem Zorne selbst zerfleischt,
soll um deinetwillen die Erde verlassen werden
und der Fels von seinem Orte wegrücken?
5 Ja, des Gottlosen Licht erlischt,
und die Flamme seines Feuers leuchtet nicht.
6 Das Licht verfinstert sich in seinem Zelte,
und seine Leuchte erlischt über ihm.
7 Seine Schritte treiben ihn in die Enge,
und sein eigener Ratschlag wird ihn stürzen.
8 Denn er wird mit seinem Fuß im Netz verstrickt
und wandelt auf Fallgruben dahin.
9 Eine Schlinge wird seine Ferse ergreifen,
und ein Fallstrick hält ihn fest.
10 Ein Garn ist für ihn auf dem Boden versteckt
und eine Falle auf seinem Pfad.
11 Von allen Seiten überfallen ihn Schrecknisse
und verfolgen ihn auf Schritt und Tritt.
12 Es hungert nach ihm sein Verderben,
und sein Unglück steht neben ihm bereit.
13 Es frißt die Glieder seines Leibes;
der Erstgeborene des Todes zehrt seine Glieder auf.
14 Er wird vertrieben aus seinem Zelte, seinem Zufluchtsort,
und man führt ihn zum Könige der Schrecken.
15 Sein Zelt wird von einem bewohnt, der ihm nicht zugehört,
auf seine Wohnung wird Schwefel gestreut.
16 Unter ihm werden seine Wurzeln verdorren
und über ihm seine Zweige verwelken.
17 Sein Gedächtnis wird verschwinden von der Erde,
und sein Name wird auf den Straßen nicht genannt werden.
18 Man stößt ihn aus dem Licht in die Finsternis,
er wird aus der Welt gejagt.
19 Kein Sproß noch Schoß bleibt ihm unter seinem Volk,
und kein Entronnener wohnt in seinen Zelten.
20 Über seinen Tag entsetzen sich die Abendländer,
und die Morgenländer ergreift Schrecken darob.
21 So geht es der Wohnung des Ungerechten
und so der Stätte dessen, der Gott nicht kennt!
