17 My spirit is consumed, my days are extinct,
The grave is ready for me.
2 Surely there are [a]mockers with me,
And mine eye dwelleth upon their provocation.
3 Give now a pledge, be surety for me with thyself;
Who is there that will strike hands with me?
4 For thou hast hid their heart from understanding:
Therefore shalt thou not exalt them.
5 He that denounceth his friends for a [b]prey,
Even the eyes of his children shall fail.
6 But he hath made me a byword of the people;
And they spit in my face.
7 Mine eye also is dim by reason of sorrow,
And all my members are as a shadow.
8 Upright men shall be astonished at this,
And the innocent shall stir up himself against the godless.
9 Yet shall the righteous hold on his way,
And he that hath clean hands shall wax stronger and stronger.
10 But as for you all, come on now again;
[c]And I shall not find a wise man among you.
11 My days are past, my purposes are broken off,
Even the [d]thoughts of my heart.
12 They change the night into day:
The light, say they, is near [e]unto the darkness.
13 If I [f]look for Sheol as my house;
If I have spread my couch in the darkness;
14 If I have said to [g]corruption, Thou art my father;
To the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister;
15 Where then is my hope?
And as for my hope, who shall see it?
16 It shall go down to the bars of Sheol,
When once there is rest in the dust.

17 Mi aliento está corrompido, mis días son cortados, y me está aparejado el sepulcro.
2 Ya no hay conmigo sino escarnecedores, en cuyas amarguras se detienen mis ojos.
3 Pon ahora, dame fianzas contigo; ¿quién tocará ahora mi mano?
4 Porque a éstos has tú escondido su corazón de entendimiento; por tanto, no los ensalzarás.
5 El que denuncia lisonjas a su prójimo, los ojos de sus hijos desfallezcan.
6 El me ha puesto por refrán de los pueblos, y delante de ellos he sido como tamboril.
7 Y mis ojos se oscurecieron de desabrimiento, y todos mis pensamientos han sido como sombra.
8 Los rectos se maravillarán de esto, y el inocente se despertará contra el hipócrita.
9 El justo retendrá su carrera, y el limpio de manos aumentará la fuerza.
10 ¶ Pero volved todos vosotros, y venid ahora, que no hallaré entre vosotros sabio.
11 Mis días se pasaron, y mis pensamientos fueron arrancados, los designios de mi corazón.
12 Me pusieron la noche por día, y la luz se acorta delante de las tinieblas.
13 Si yo espero, el Seol es mi casa; en las tinieblas hice mi cama.
14 A la huesa tengo dicho: Mi padre eres tú; a los gusanos: Mi madre y mi hermano.
15 ¿Dónde pues estará ahora mi esperanza? Y mi esperanza ¿quién la verá?
16 A los rincones del Seol descenderán, y juntamente descansarán en el polvo.

17 “My spirit is broken; my days are extinct;
the grave is ready for me.(A)
2 Surely there are mockers around me,
and my eye dwells on their provocation.(B)
3 “Lay down a pledge for me with yourself;
who is there who will give surety for me?(C)
4 Since you have closed their minds to understanding,
therefore you will not let them triumph.(D)
5 Those who denounce friends for reward—
the eyes of their children will fail.(E)
6 “He has made me a byword of the peoples,
and I am one before whom people spit.(F)
7 My eye has grown dim from grief,
and all my members are like a shadow.(G)
8 The upright are appalled at this,
and the innocent stir themselves up against the godless.
9 Yet the righteous hold to their way,
and they who have clean hands grow stronger and stronger.(H)
10 But you, come back now, all of you,
and I shall not find a sensible person among you.
11 My days are past; my plans are broken off,
the desires of my heart.(I)
12 They make night into day;
‘The light,’ they say, ‘is near to the darkness.’[a]
13 If I look for Sheol as my house,
if I spread my couch in darkness,(J)
14 if I say to the Pit, ‘You are my father,’
and to the worm, ‘My mother’ or ‘My sister,’(K)
15 where then is my hope?
Who will see my hope?(L)
16 Will it go down to the bars of Sheol?
Shall we descend together into the dust?”(M)

17 Ik kan niet meer!
Mijn dagen zijn geteld.
Het graf wacht al op mij.
2 Ik word door iedereen belachelijk gemaakt.
Dat is het enige wat ik om me heen zie.
3 Wilt U voor mij opkomen?
Want wie anders zal dat doen?
4 Want Ú heeft de waarheid voor hen verborgen. Ú heeft ervoor gezorgd dat ze niet begrijpen dat ik onschuldig ben.
U zal hen toch niet ongestraft hun gang laten gaan?
5 Als iemand zijn vrienden verraadt om daar zelf beter van te worden,
zal het uiteindelijk met hem en zijn kinderen slecht aflopen.
6 De mensen gebruiken mij als een spreekwoord.
Over iemand die heel arm is, zeggen ze:
"Kijk eens, hij is zo arm als Job."
Ze spugen me in mijn gezicht.
7 Mijn ogen staan dof van verdriet.
Ik ben broodmager geworden.
8 Mensen die leven zoals U het wil, zijn erdoor geschokt.
Ze ergeren zich aan mensen die alleen maar doen alsof ze goed leven.
9 Ze houden vast aan hun goede manier van leven.
Met hen gaat het steeds beter.
10 Toch komen jullie telkens bij me terug met jullie wijsheden.
Nou, kom dan maar!
Veel verstandigs hoor ik niet van jullie.
11 Mijn leven is voorbij.
Van al mijn toekomstplannen komt niets meer terecht.
Ik kan al mijn plannen wel vergeten.
12 Jullie doen alsof het allemaal niet zo erg is.
Jullie zeggen dat het allemaal wel goed komt.
13 Maar ik verwacht dat het graf al snel mijn huis zal zijn.
In het eeuwige duister staat al een bed voor me klaar.
14 Het graf is me nu al zo vertrouwd als mijn vader.
De wormen zijn mij zo bekend als mijn moeder en zus.
15 Waar kan ik dan nog op hopen?
Wie kan me zeggen wat ik nu nog te verwachten heb?
16 Al mijn hoop gaat met me mee naar het dodenrijk.
Samen zullen we in het graf worden gelegd.
