Quinto discurso de Job

16 A esto Job contestó:

«Muchas veces he escuchado cosas semejantes;
    ¡el consuelo de ustedes es un desastre![a]
¿No habrá fin a sus discursos inútiles?
    ¿Qué les irrita tanto que siguen contendiendo?
También yo podría hablar del mismo modo
    si estuvieran ustedes en mi lugar.
También yo pronunciaría bellos discursos en su contra,
    meneando con sarcasmo la cabeza.
Les infundiría nuevos bríos con la boca;
    les daría consuelo con los labios.

»Si hablo, mi dolor no disminuye;
    si me callo, tampoco se me calma.
Ciertamente Dios me ha destruido;
    ha exterminado[b] a toda mi familia.
Me tiene acorralado[c] y da testimonio contra mí;
    mi deplorable estado se levanta y me condena.
En su enojo Dios me desgarra y me persigue;
    rechina los dientes contra mí;
    mi adversario me clava la mirada.
10 La gente se mofa de mí abiertamente;
    burlones, me dan de bofetadas,
    y todos juntos se ponen en mi contra.
11 Dios me ha entregado en manos de gente injusta;
    me ha arrojado en las garras de los malvados.
12 Yo vivía tranquilo, pero él me destrozó;
    me agarró por el cuello y me hizo pedazos;
    me hizo blanco de sus ataques.
13 Sus arqueros me rodearon.
    Sin piedad me perforaron los riñones
    y mi hígado se derramó por el suelo.
14 Abriéndome herida tras herida,
    se lanzó contra mí como un guerrero.

15 »He cosido la ropa de luto en mi piel;
    en el polvo tengo enterrada la frente.[d]
16 De tanto llorar tengo enrojecida la cara
    y profundas ojeras tengo en torno a los ojos;
17 pero mis manos están libres de violencia
    y es pura mi oración.

18 »¡Ah, tierra, no cubras mi sangre!
    ¡No dejes que se acalle mi clamor!
19 Ahora mismo tengo en los cielos un testigo;
    en lo alto se encuentra mi abogado.

Job

16 Then Job replied:

“I have heard many things like these;
    you are miserable comforters,(A) all of you!(B)
Will your long-winded speeches never end?(C)
    What ails you that you keep on arguing?(D)
I also could speak like you,
    if you were in my place;
I could make fine speeches against you
    and shake my head(E) at you.
But my mouth would encourage you;
    comfort(F) from my lips would bring you relief.(G)

“Yet if I speak, my pain is not relieved;
    and if I refrain, it does not go away.(H)
Surely, God, you have worn me out;(I)
    you have devastated my entire household.(J)
You have shriveled me up—and it has become a witness;
    my gauntness(K) rises up and testifies against me.(L)
God assails me and tears(M) me in his anger(N)
    and gnashes his teeth at me;(O)
    my opponent fastens on me his piercing eyes.(P)
10 People open their mouths(Q) to jeer at me;(R)
    they strike my cheek(S) in scorn
    and unite together against me.(T)
11 God has turned me over to the ungodly
    and thrown me into the clutches of the wicked.(U)
12 All was well with me, but he shattered me;
    he seized me by the neck and crushed me.(V)
He has made me his target;(W)
13     his archers surround me.(X)
Without pity, he pierces(Y) my kidneys
    and spills my gall on the ground.
14 Again and again(Z) he bursts upon me;
    he rushes at me like a warrior.(AA)

Job’s Reply

16 Job replied,

“I’ve heard many of these things before.
    All of you are terrible at comforting me!
Your speeches go on forever.
    Won’t they ever end?
What’s wrong with you?
    Why do you keep on arguing?
If you and I changed places,
    I could say the same things you are saying.
I could make fine speeches against you.
    I could shake my head at you.
But what I might say would give you hope.
    My words of comfort would help you.

“If I speak, it doesn’t help me.
    And if I keep quiet, my pain doesn’t go away.
God has worn me out completely.
    He has destroyed my whole family.
People can see the condition he has put me in.
    My thin body stands as a witness against me.
God is angry with me.
    He attacks me and tears me up.
He grinds his teeth at me.
    He stares at me as if he were my enemy.
10 People make fun of me.
    They slap my face and laugh at me.
    All of them join together against me.
11 God has turned me over to sinful people.
    He has handed me over to them.
12 Everything was going well with me.
    But he broke me into pieces like a clay pot.
    He grabbed me by the neck and crushed me.
He has taken aim at me.
13     He shoots his arrows at me from all sides.
Without pity, he stabs me in the kidneys.
    He spills my insides on the ground.
14 He smashes through me as if I were a wall.
    He rushes at me like a fighting man.

15 “I’ve sewed rough clothing over my skin.
    All I can do is sit here in the dust.
16 My face is red from crying.
    I have dark circles under my eyes.
17 But I haven’t harmed anyone.
    My prayers to God are pure.

18 “Earth, please don’t cover up my blood!
    May God always hear my cry for help!
19 Even now my witness is in heaven.
    The one who speaks up for me is there.
20 My go-between is my friend
    as I pour out my tears to God.
21 He makes his appeal to God to help me
    as a person pleads for a friend.

22 “Only a few years will pass by.
    Then I’ll take the path of no return.
