Elifaz habla otra vez
15 Entonces Elifaz de Temán respondió:
2 «Un sabio no respondería con un viento tan absurdo;
no llenaría el abdomen con tanto aire caliente.
3 ¿Discutiría basado en tonterías
y palabras sin provecho?
4 Tú no le das ningún valor al respeto que se le debe a Dios
y no le das importancia a meditar en su presencia.
5 Tus palabras son motivadas por tu pecado,
y disfrutas engañando a la gente con tu palabrería.
6 Tus palabras te condenan, no yo;
lo que tú mismo dices habla en tu contra.
7 »¿Crees que fuiste el primer ser humano?
¿Acaso naciste antes que las montañas?
8 ¿Has escuchado las reuniones del consejo de Dios?
¿Crees que eres el único que puede ser sabio?
9 ¿Qué sabes tú que nosotros no sepamos?
¿Qué entiendes tú que nosotros no entendamos?
10 Hay quien tiene canas entre nosotros,
uno que es mucho más viejo que tu papá.
11 ¿Te parecen poco el consuelo que Dios mismo te brinda
y las palabras amables?
12 ¿Por qué te extravían tus pensamientos?
¿Por qué esos ojos tan arrogantes?
13 ¿Por qué descargas tu ira contra Dios?
¿Por qué salen esas acusaciones de tus labios?
14 ¿Es acaso intachable algún ser humano?
¿Es que alguien nacido de mujer puede estar libre de culpa?
15 Dios no confía ni en sus propios ángeles[a].
A los ojos de Dios ni siquiera los cielos son puros,
16 con menos razón el ser humano,
un ser corrupto y abominable,
que bebe la maldad como si fuera agua.
17 »Escúchame, voy a explicarte lo que quiero decir.
Soy testigo de ello y te lo voy a contar.
18 Es algo que los sabios han relatado
y que no era un secreto para sus antepasados.
19 Sólo a ellos les dieron la tierra,
no había extranjero entre ellos.
20 El perverso sufre toda la vida, se retuerce de dolor.
Los días del tirano están contados.
21 Escucha voces aterradoras.
En medio de su prosperidad llegará quien los arruine.
22 No está seguro de volver de las tinieblas
y está destinado a morir en batalla.
23 Vaga buscando pan sin encontrarlo;
sabe que le esperan tiempos difíciles.
24 Le aterran la ansiedad y la angustia
que le asaltan como un rey listo para atacar.
25 Porque ha levantado la mano contra Dios
y se ha envalentonado frente a él.
26 Con cuello erguido se ha enfrentado a Dios,
usando la parte más gruesa y fuerte de su escudo.
27 »Aunque le aumenten las riquezas,
esté rozagante y le haya ido muy bien,
28 vivirá en pueblos fantasmas,
en casas abandonadas y derruidas.
29 Por tanto, la riqueza no le durará mucho
e irá perdiendo influencia.
Sus posesiones no cubrirán la tierra.
30 No podrá escapar de la oscuridad.
El fuego acabará con sus ramas
y será arrastrado por el soplo de su boca.
31 Que no confíe en lo que no tiene valor
porque de ahí no va a sacar nada.
32 Recibirá todo su merecido, antes de lo que se espera,
y sus ramas no reverdecerán.
33 Será como un viñedo que sacude sus uvas sin madurar;
como un olivo que deja caer su flor.
34 Porque la compañía de la gente perversa no produce nada bueno.
Los hogares de los que sobornan serán consumidos por el fuego.
35 Ellos traman maldades y producen dolor.
Su vientre concibe engaño».

15 Then Eliphaz the Temanite(A) replied:
2 “Would a wise person answer with empty notions
or fill their belly with the hot east wind?(B)
3 Would they argue with useless words,
with speeches that have no value?(C)
4 But you even undermine piety
and hinder devotion to God.(D)
5 Your sin(E) prompts your mouth;(F)
you adopt the tongue of the crafty.(G)
6 Your own mouth condemns you, not mine;
your own lips testify against you.(H)
7 “Are you the first man ever born?(I)
Were you brought forth before the hills?(J)
8 Do you listen in on God’s council?(K)
Do you have a monopoly on wisdom?(L)
9 What do you know that we do not know?
What insights do you have that we do not have?(M)
10 The gray-haired and the aged(N) are on our side,
men even older than your father.(O)
11 Are God’s consolations(P) not enough for you,
words(Q) spoken gently to you?(R)
12 Why has your heart(S) carried you away,
and why do your eyes flash,
13 so that you vent your rage(T) against God
and pour out such words(U) from your mouth?(V)
14 “What are mortals, that they could be pure,
or those born of woman,(W) that they could be righteous?(X)
15 If God places no trust in his holy ones,(Y)
if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes,(Z)
16 how much less mortals, who are vile and corrupt,(AA)
who drink up evil(AB) like water!(AC)
17 “Listen to me and I will explain to you;
let me tell you what I have seen,(AD)
18 what the wise have declared,
hiding nothing received from their ancestors(AE)
19 (to whom alone the land(AF) was given
when no foreigners moved among them):
20 All his days the wicked man suffers torment,(AG)
the ruthless man through all the years stored up for him.(AH)
21 Terrifying sounds fill his ears;(AI)
when all seems well, marauders attack him.(AJ)
22 He despairs of escaping the realm of darkness;(AK)
he is marked for the sword.(AL)
23 He wanders about(AM) for food like a vulture;(AN)
he knows the day of darkness(AO) is at hand.(AP)
24 Distress and anguish(AQ) fill him with terror;(AR)
troubles overwhelm him, like a king(AS) poised to attack,
25 because he shakes his fist(AT) at God
and vaunts himself against the Almighty,(AU)
26 defiantly charging against him
with a thick, strong shield.(AV)
27 “Though his face is covered with fat
and his waist bulges with flesh,(AW)
28 he will inhabit ruined towns
and houses where no one lives,(AX)
houses crumbling to rubble.(AY)
29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure,(AZ)
nor will his possessions spread over the land.(BA)
30 He will not escape the darkness;(BB)
a flame(BC) will wither his shoots,(BD)
and the breath of God’s mouth(BE) will carry him away.(BF)
31 Let him not deceive(BG) himself by trusting what is worthless,(BH)
for he will get nothing in return.(BI)
32 Before his time(BJ) he will wither,(BK)
and his branches will not flourish.(BL)
33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes,(BM)
like an olive tree shedding its blossoms.(BN)
34 For the company of the godless(BO) will be barren,
and fire will consume(BP) the tents of those who love bribes.(BQ)
35 They conceive trouble(BR) and give birth to evil;(BS)
their womb fashions deceit.”
