Sus desafíos condenan a Job
15 Elifaz de Temán respondió así:
2 ¿Da un sabio respuestas vanas?
¿Llena su vientre de viento del este?
3 ¿Propone argumentos inútiles,
palabras que no valen nada?
4 Peor tú, que te muestras impío
y anulas así los coloquios con Dios.
5 Tu pecado inspira tus palabras,
usas el lenguaje de la astucia.
6 Tu boca te condena, no yo;
tus labios testifican contra ti.
7 ¿Eres el primogénito de la humanidad
y te engendraron antes que a las colinas?
8 ¿Has asistido al consejo divino?
¿Sólo tú posees sabiduría?
9 ¿Qué sabes tú que nosotros no sepamos,
qué entiendes tú que nosotros no entendamos?
10 Entre nosotros hay ancianos venerables,
más repletos de días que tu padre.
11 ¿Te sabe a poco el consuelo de Dios,
las amables palabras que escuchas?
12 ¿Por qué dejas que te domine la pasión
y miras con ojos desorbitados,
13 haciendo a Dios objeto de tu cólera
y lanzando esas palabras por tu boca?
14 ¿Qué es el ser humano para sentirse puro,
el nacido de mujer para creerse inocente?
15 Si Dios no confía en sus santos
ni le parecen puros los cielos,
16 ¿qué decir del infame y corrompido,
del ser humano que se sacia de maldad?
17 Escúchame, que quiero hablarte,
voy a decirte lo que he visto,
18 lo que han contado los sabios
y han transmitido sus antepasados,
19 aquellos a quienes entregaron el país,
cuando no había mezcla de extranjeros.
20 El malvado vive entre tormentos,
al tirano le esperan años contados;
21 le zumban los oídos con ecos de terrores,
lo asalta el Devastador mientras vive en paz.
22 Que no piense que escapará de las tinieblas,
pues está destinado a la espada;
23 desechado como pasto de buitres,
sabe que es cierta su ruina.
24 Los días tenebrosos lo aterran,
lo atenazan angustia y ansiedad,
como a un rey que se lanza al ataque.
25 Y es que alzó su mano contra Dios
e intentó retar al Todopoderoso,
26 arremetiendo directo contra él
tras la maciza panza de su escudo.
27 Aunque rebosen grasa sus carrillos
y el sebo forre sus lomos,
28 vivirá en pueblos arruinados,
en casas donde nadie habita,
destinadas a ser escombreras.
29 No se enriquecerá ni durarán sus bienes,
no crecerán sus posesiones sobre la tierra.
30 No podrá huir de la oscuridad,
una llama secará sus brotes,
el viento barrerá sus renuevos.
31 Que no confíe en su buena talla,
pues su rama acabará fracasando.
32 Antes de tiempo se marchitará,
sus ramas no reverdecerán.
33 Será viña cuyas uvas no maduran,
olivo que pierde sus flores.
34 No da frutos la casta de los impíos,
el fuego consume sus hogares.
35 Quien se preña de maldad, pare desgracia;
en su vientre se prepara la decepción.

15 ¶ Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered, and said,
2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge and fill his belly with the east wind?
3 Should he dispute with useless words and with reasons that are not profitable?
4 Thou dost also cast off fear and undermine prayer before God.
5 For thy mouth has declared thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.
6 Thine own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I; thine own lips shall testify against thee.
7 Wast thou born before Adam? Or wast thou formed before the hills?
8 Hast thou heard the secret of God, that thou dost detain wisdom in thee alone?
9 What dost thou know that we do not? What dost thou understand, which is not in us?
10 Among us are also gray hairs; there are also aged men, much elder than thy father.
11 Are the consolations of God in such small esteem with thee? Is there by chance any secret thing concerning thee?
12 Why does thine heart carry thee away, and why do thine eyes blink,
13 that thou dost reply unto God with thy spirit and bring forth such words out of thy mouth?
14 What is man that he should be clean and that he that is born of a woman should be justified?
15 Behold, he puts no trust in his saints, and not even the heavens are clean in his sight.
16 How much less the man who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water?
17 ¶ Listen to me and I will show thee and declare unto thee that which I have seen,
18 that which the wise men have told us of their fathers and have not hid it,
19 unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 The wicked man travails with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden from the violent.
21 Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.
22 He will not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is always watching the sword.
23 He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness is prepared for him.
24 Tribulation and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25 Because he extended his hand against God and strengthens himself against the Almighty,
26 he shall run him through in the neck, upon the thick shoulder pieces of his shields;
27 for he covered his face with his fatness and made collops of fat on his flanks;
28 and he dwelt in desolate cities and in houses which no one inhabited, which were in heaps.
29 He shall not become rich, nor shall his strength be established, neither shall he extend his beauty upon the earth.
30 He shall not escape from the darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth he shall perish.
31 He shall not be established; in vanity he shall err; therefore, he shall be changed into vanity.
32 He shall be cut off before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
33 He shall shake off his sour grapes as the vine and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
34 For the congregation of the hypocrites shall be made desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
35 They conceive pain and bring forth iniquity, and their belly meditates deceit.

15 Then Eliphaz the Temanite(A) replied:
2 “Would a wise person answer with empty notions
or fill their belly with the hot east wind?(B)
3 Would they argue with useless words,
with speeches that have no value?(C)
4 But you even undermine piety
and hinder devotion to God.(D)
5 Your sin(E) prompts your mouth;(F)
you adopt the tongue of the crafty.(G)
6 Your own mouth condemns you, not mine;
your own lips testify against you.(H)
7 “Are you the first man ever born?(I)
Were you brought forth before the hills?(J)
8 Do you listen in on God’s council?(K)
Do you have a monopoly on wisdom?(L)
9 What do you know that we do not know?
What insights do you have that we do not have?(M)
10 The gray-haired and the aged(N) are on our side,
men even older than your father.(O)
11 Are God’s consolations(P) not enough for you,
words(Q) spoken gently to you?(R)
12 Why has your heart(S) carried you away,
and why do your eyes flash,
13 so that you vent your rage(T) against God
and pour out such words(U) from your mouth?(V)
14 “What are mortals, that they could be pure,
or those born of woman,(W) that they could be righteous?(X)
15 If God places no trust in his holy ones,(Y)
if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes,(Z)
16 how much less mortals, who are vile and corrupt,(AA)
who drink up evil(AB) like water!(AC)
17 “Listen to me and I will explain to you;
let me tell you what I have seen,(AD)
18 what the wise have declared,
hiding nothing received from their ancestors(AE)
19 (to whom alone the land(AF) was given
when no foreigners moved among them):
20 All his days the wicked man suffers torment,(AG)
the ruthless man through all the years stored up for him.(AH)
21 Terrifying sounds fill his ears;(AI)
when all seems well, marauders attack him.(AJ)
22 He despairs of escaping the realm of darkness;(AK)
he is marked for the sword.(AL)
23 He wanders about(AM) for food like a vulture;(AN)
he knows the day of darkness(AO) is at hand.(AP)
24 Distress and anguish(AQ) fill him with terror;(AR)
troubles overwhelm him, like a king(AS) poised to attack,
25 because he shakes his fist(AT) at God
and vaunts himself against the Almighty,(AU)
26 defiantly charging against him
with a thick, strong shield.(AV)
27 “Though his face is covered with fat
and his waist bulges with flesh,(AW)
28 he will inhabit ruined towns
and houses where no one lives,(AX)
houses crumbling to rubble.(AY)
29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure,(AZ)
nor will his possessions spread over the land.(BA)
30 He will not escape the darkness;(BB)
a flame(BC) will wither his shoots,(BD)
and the breath of God’s mouth(BE) will carry him away.(BF)
31 Let him not deceive(BG) himself by trusting what is worthless,(BH)
for he will get nothing in return.(BI)
32 Before his time(BJ) he will wither,(BK)
and his branches will not flourish.(BL)
33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes,(BM)
like an olive tree shedding its blossoms.(BN)
34 For the company of the godless(BO) will be barren,
and fire will consume(BP) the tents of those who love bribes.(BQ)
35 They conceive trouble(BR) and give birth to evil;(BS)
their womb fashions deceit.”
