³² Before his time^(A) he will wither,^(B)
    and his branches will not flourish.^(C)

¹⁷ Do not be overwicked,
    and do not be a fool—
    why die before your time?^(A)

¹⁶ They were carried off before their time,^(A)
    their foundations^(B) washed away by a flood.^(C)

²³ But you, God, will bring down the wicked
    into the pit^(A) of decay;
the bloodthirsty and deceitful^(B)
    will not live out half their days.^(C)

But as for me, I trust in you.^(D)

⁵ I will be like the dew^(A) to Israel;
    he will blossom like a lily.^(B)
Like a cedar of Lebanon^(C)
    he will send down his roots;^(D)
6     his young shoots will grow.
His splendor will be like an olive tree,^(E)
    his fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon.^(F)
7 People will dwell again in his shade;^(G)
    they will flourish like the grain,
they will blossom^(H) like the vine—
    Israel’s fame will be like the wine^(I) of Lebanon.^(J)

¹⁶ Ephraim^(A) is blighted,
    their root is withered,
    they yield no fruit.^(B)
Even if they bear children,
    I will slay^(C) their cherished offspring.”

¹¹ When its twigs are dry, they are broken off^(A)
    and women come and make fires^(B) with them.
For this is a people without understanding;^(C)
    so their Maker has no compassion on them,
    and their Creator^(D) shows them no favor.^(E)
