Job Speaks of the Finality of Death
14 “Man, who is born of a woman,
Is short-lived and full of turmoil.
2
“Like a flower he comes forth and withers;
He also flees like a shadow and does not remain.
3
“You also open Your eyes upon him
And bring him into judgment with Yourself.
4
“Who can make a clean thing out of the unclean?
No one!(A)
5
“Since his days are determined,
The number of his months is with You [in Your control],
And You have made his limits so he cannot pass [his allotted time].
6
“[O God] turn your gaze from him so that he may rest,
Until he fulfills his day [on earth] like a hired man.
7
“For there is hope for a tree,
If it is cut down, that it will sprout again,
And that the shoots of it will not cease nor fail, [but there is no such hope for man].
8
“Though its roots grow old in the earth
And its stump dies in the dry soil,
9
Yet at the scent of water [the stump of the tree] will flourish
And bring forth sprigs and shoots like a seedling.
10
“But [the brave, strong] man must die and lie face down;
Man breathes his last, and where is he?
11
“As water evaporates from the sea,
And a river drains and dries up,
12
So man lies down and does not rise [again].
Until the heavens are no longer,
The dead will not awake nor be raised from their sleep.
13
“Oh, that You would hide me in Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead),
That You would conceal me until Your wrath is past,
That You would set a definite time and then remember me [and in Your lovingkindness imprint me on your heart]!
14
“If a man dies, will he live again?
I will wait all the days of my struggle
Until my change and release will come.(B)
15
“[Then] You will call, and I will answer You;
You will long for [me] the work of Your hands.
16
“But now You number [each of] my steps;
You do not observe nor take note of my sin.
17
“My transgression is sealed up in a bag,
And You cover my wickedness [from Your view].
18
“But as a mountain, if it falls, crumbles into nothing,
And as the rock is moved from its place,
19
Water wears away the stones,
Its floods and torrents wash away the soil of the earth,
So You [O Lord] destroy the hope of man.
20
“You prevail forever against him and overpower him, and he passes on;
You change his appearance and send him away [from the presence of the living].
21
“His sons achieve honor, and he does not know it;
They become insignificant, and he is not aware of it.
22
“But his body [lamenting its decay] grieves in pain over it,
And his soul mourns over [the loss of] himself.”

Job demande à Dieu d’abréger ses souffrances
14 L’homme né de la femme,
ses jours sont limités ╵et pleins de troubles !
2 Il est comme une fleur ╵qui sort de terre et que l’on coupe.
Il fuit comme une ombre furtive, ╵et il ne dure pas.
3 Et c’est cet homme ╵que tu épies,
et, devant toi, ╵tu me traînes[a] en justice.
4 Peut-on tirer le pur ╵de ce qui est impur ?
Personne ne le peut.
5 Puisque tu as fixé ╵le nombre de ses jours, ╵et que toi, tu connais ╵le nombre de ses ans,
puisque tu as fixé ╵le terme de sa vie ╵qu’il ne franchira pas,
6 détourne tes regards de lui, ╵accorde-lui quelque répit
pour qu’il jouisse de son repos ╵comme le salarié[b].
7 Car un arbre, du moins, ╵conserve une espérance :
s’il est coupé, ╵il peut renaître encore,
il ne cesse d’avoir ╵de nouveaux rejetons.
8 Sa racine peut bien ╵vieillir dans le terrain
et sa souche périr, ╵enfouie dans la poussière,
9 dès qu’il flaire de l’eau, ╵voilà qu’il reverdit
et produit des rameaux ╵comme une jeune plante.
10 Mais lorsque l’homme meurt, ╵il reste inanimé.
Quand l’être humain expire, ╵où donc est-il alors ?
11 L’eau disparaît des mers,
les rivières tarissent ╵et restent desséchées,
12 et l’homme, quand il meurt, ╵ne se relève plus ;
jusqu’à ce que le ciel s’éclipse ╵il ne se réveillera pas,
il ne sortira pas ╵de son dernier sommeil.
13 Si seulement, ô Dieu, ╵tu voulais me tenir caché ╵dans le séjour des morts,
m’y abriter ╵jusqu’au jour où, enfin, ╵ta colère sera passée !
Si seulement tu me fixais ╵un terme après lequel ╵tu penserais à moi !
14 Mais l’homme une fois mort, ╵va-t-il revivre ?
Alors, tous les jours de service ╵que je dois accomplir
j’attendrais que le temps ╵de ma relève arrive.
15 Toi, tu m’appellerais ╵et je te répondrais,
et tu soupirerais ╵après ta créature.
16 Alors que maintenant ╵tu comptes tous mes pas !
Tu ne resterais plus ╵à l’affût de mes fautes.
17 Ainsi mon crime ╵serait scellé[c] dans un sachet,
tu couvrirais mes fautes ╵d’une couche de plâtre.
18 La montagne s’écroule ╵et se disloque,
le rocher se détache ╵du lieu qu’il occupait.
19 L’eau érode les pierres
et son ruissellement ╵entraîne le terreau.
De même, tu anéantis ╵l’espoir de l’homme.
20 Tu le terrasses sans retour, ╵et il s’en va.
Oui, tu le défigures[d], ╵puis tu le congédies.
21 Que ses enfants soient honorés, ╵lui, il n’en saura rien.
Ou qu’ils soient abaissés, ╵lui, il l’ignorera.
22 Il ne peut que souffrir ╵du mal qui l’atteint en son corps
et s’affliger ╵du malheur qu’il ressent.

are of few days(B) and full of trouble.(C)
2 They spring up like flowers(D) and wither away;(E)

3 Do you fix your eye on them?(H)
Will you bring them[a] before you for judgment?(I)
4 Who can bring what is pure(J) from the impure?(K)
No one!(L)
5 A person’s days are determined;(M)
you have decreed the number of his months(N)
and have set limits he cannot exceed.(O)
6 So look away from him and let him alone,(P)
till he has put in his time like a hired laborer.(Q)
7 “At least there is hope for a tree:(R)
If it is cut down, it will sprout again,
and its new shoots(S) will not fail.(T)
8 Its roots may grow old in the ground
and its stump(U) die in the soil,
9 yet at the scent of water(V) it will bud

11 As the water of a lake dries up
or a riverbed becomes parched and dry,(Z)
12 so he lies down and does not rise;(AA)

or be roused from their sleep.(AC)
13 “If only you would hide me in the grave(AD)
and conceal me till your anger has passed!(AE)
If only you would set me a time
and then remember(AF) me!(AG)
14 If someone dies, will they live again?
All the days of my hard service(AH)
I will wait for my renewal[b](AI) to come.
15 You will call and I will answer you;(AJ)
you will long for the creature your hands have made.(AK)
16 Surely then you will count my steps(AL)
but not keep track of my sin.(AM)
17 My offenses will be sealed(AN) up in a bag;(AO)
you will cover over my sin.(AP)
18 “But as a mountain erodes and crumbles(AQ)
and as a rock is moved from its place,(AR)
19 as water wears away stones
and torrents(AS) wash away the soil,(AT)
so you destroy a person’s hope.(AU)
20 You overpower them once for all, and they are gone;(AV)
you change their countenance and send them away.(AW)
21 If their children are honored, they do not know it;
if their offspring are brought low, they do not see it.(AX)
22 They feel but the pain of their own bodies(AY)
and mourn only for themselves.(AZ)”
