Job Speaks of Life’s Woes

14 “Man who is born of woman
Is of few days and (A)full of [a]trouble.
(B)He comes forth like a flower and fades away;
He flees like a shadow and does not continue.
And (C)do You open Your eyes on such a one,
And (D)bring [b]me to judgment with Yourself?
Who (E)can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?
No one!
(F)Since his days are determined,
The number of his months is with You;
You have appointed his limits, so that he cannot pass.
(G)Look away from him that he may [c]rest,
Till (H)like a hired man he finishes his day.

“For there is hope for a tree,
If it is cut down, that it will sprout again,
And that its tender shoots will not cease.
Though its root may grow old in the earth,
And its stump may die in the ground,
Yet at the scent of water it will bud
And bring forth branches like a plant.
10 But man dies and [d]is laid away;
Indeed he [e]breathes his last
And where is (I)he?
11 As water disappears from the sea,
And a river becomes parched and dries up,
12 So man lies down and does not rise.
(J)Till the heavens are no more,
They will not awake
Nor be roused from their sleep.

13 “Oh, that You would hide me in the grave,
That You would conceal me until Your wrath is past,
That You would appoint me a set time, and remember me!
14 If a man dies, shall he live again?
All the days of my hard service (K)I will wait,
Till my change comes.

Jerusalem, Holy City of the Future

Again the word of the Lord of hosts came, saying, “Thus says the Lord of hosts:

(A)‘I am [a]zealous for Zion with great [b]zeal;
With great [c]fervor I am zealous for her.’

“Thus says the Lord:

(B)‘I will return to Zion,
And (C)dwell in the midst of Jerusalem.
Jerusalem (D)shall be called the City of Truth,
(E)The Mountain of the Lord of hosts,
(F)The Holy Mountain.’

“Thus says the Lord of hosts:

(G)‘Old men and old women shall again sit
In the streets of Jerusalem,
Each one with his staff in his hand
Because of [d]great age.
The streets of the city
Shall be (H)full of boys and girls
Playing in its streets.’

“Thus says the Lord of hosts:

‘If it is [e]marvelous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days,
(I)Will it also be marvelous in My eyes?’
Says the Lord of hosts.

“Thus says the Lord of hosts:

‘Behold, (J)I will save My people from the land of the [f]east
And from the land of the [g]west;
I will (K)bring them back,
And they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem.
(L)They shall be My people
And I will be their God,
(M)In truth and righteousness.’

11 For (A)both He who [a]sanctifies and those who are being sanctified (B)are all of one, for which reason (C)He is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 saying:

(D)“I will declare Your name to My brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.”

13 And again:

(E)“I will put My trust in Him.”

And again:

(F)“Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.”

14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He (G)Himself likewise shared in the same, (H)that through death He might destroy him who had the power of (I)death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who (J)through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. 16 For indeed He does not [b]give aid to angels, but He does [c]give aid to the seed of Abraham. 17 Therefore, in all things He had (K)to be made like His brethren, that He might be (L)a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 (M)For in that He Himself has suffered, being [d]tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.
