13 “All this I have seen with my own eyes;
with my own ears I have heard and understood it.
2 Whatever you know, I know too;
I am not inferior to you.
3 However, it’s Shaddai I want to speak with;
I want to prove my case to God.
4 But you, what you do is whitewash with lies;
you are all witch doctors!
5 I wish you would just stay silent;
for you, that would be wisdom!
6 “Now listen to my reasoning,
pay attention to how I present my dispute.
7 Is it for God’s sake that you speak so wickedly?
for him that you talk deceitfully?
8 Do you need to take his side
and plead God’s case for him?
9 If he examines you, will all go well?
Can you deceive him, as one man deceives another?
10 If you are secretly flattering [him],
he will surely rebuke you.
11 Doesn’t God’s majesty terrify you?
Aren’t you overcome with dread of him?
12 Your maxims are garbage-proverbs;
your answers crumble like clay.
13 “So be quiet! Let me be! I’ll do the talking,
come on me what may!
14 Why am I taking my flesh in my teeth,
taking my life in my hands?
15 Look, he will kill me — I don’t expect more,
but I will still defend my ways to his face.
16 And this is what will save me —
that a hypocrite cannot appear before him.
17 “Listen closely, then, to my words;
pay attention to what I am saying.
18 Here, now, I have prepared my case;
I know I am in the right.
19 If anyone can contend with me,
I will be quiet and die!
20 “Only grant two things to me, God;
then I won’t hide myself from your face —
21 take your hand away from me,
and don’t let fear of you frighten me.
22 Then, if you call, I will answer.
Or let me speak, and you, answer me!
23 How many crimes and sins have I committed?
Make me know my transgression and sin.
24 Why do you hide your face
and think of me as your enemy?
25 Do you want to harass a wind-driven leaf?
do you want to pursue a dry straw?
26 Is this why you draw up bitter charges against me
and punish me for the faults of my youth?
27 You put my feet in the stocks,
you watch me closely wherever I go,
you trace out each footprint of mine —
28 though [my body] decays like something rotten
or like a moth-eaten garment.

13 Voici, mon oeil a vu tout cela, Mon oreille l'a entendu et y a pris garde.
2 Ce que vous savez, je le sais aussi, Je ne vous suis point inférieur.
3 Mais je veux parler au Tout Puissant, Je veux plaider ma cause devant Dieu;
4 Car vous, vous n'imaginez que des faussetés, Vous êtes tous des médecins de néant.
5 Que n'avez-vous gardé le silence? Vous auriez passé pour avoir de la sagesse.
6 Écoutez, je vous prie, ma défense, Et soyez attentifs à la réplique de mes lèvres.
7 Direz-vous en faveur de Dieu ce qui est injuste, Et pour le soutenir alléguerez-vous des faussetés?
8 Voulez-vous avoir égard à sa personne? Voulez-vous plaider pour Dieu?
9 S'il vous sonde, vous approuvera-t-il? Ou le tromperez-vous comme on trompe un homme?
10 Certainement il vous condamnera, Si vous n'agissez en secret que par égard pour sa personne.
11 Sa majesté ne vous épouvantera-t-elle pas? Sa terreur ne tombera-t-elle pas sur vous?
12 Vos sentences sont des sentences de cendre, Vos retranchements sont des retranchements de boue.
13 Taisez-vous, laissez-moi, je veux parler! Il m'en arrivera ce qu'il pourra.
14 Pourquoi saisirais-je ma chair entre les dents? J'exposerai plutôt ma vie.
15 Voici, il me tuera; je n'ai rien à espérer; Mais devant lui je défendrai ma conduite.
16 Cela même peut servir à mon salut, Car un impie n'ose paraître en sa présence.
17 Écoutez, écoutez mes paroles, Prêtez l'oreille à ce que je vais dire.
18 Me voici prêt à plaider ma cause; Je sais que j'ai raison.
19 Quelqu'un disputera-t-il contre moi? Alors je me tais, et je veux mourir.
20 Seulement, accorde-moi deux choses Et je ne me cacherai pas de loin de ta face:
21 Retire ta main de dessus moi, Et que tes terreurs ne me troublent plus.
22 Puis appelle, et je répondrai, Ou si je parle, réponds-moi!
23 Quel est le nombre de mes iniquités et de mes péchés? Fais-moi connaître mes transgressions et mes péchés.
24 Pourquoi caches-tu ton visage, Et me prends-tu pour ton ennemi?
25 Veux-tu frapper une feuille agitée? Veux-tu poursuivre une paille desséchée?
26 Pourquoi m'infliger d'amères souffrances, Me punir pour des fautes de jeunesse?
27 Pourquoi mettre mes pieds dans les ceps, Surveiller tous mes mouvements, Tracer une limite à mes pas,
28 Quand mon corps tombe en pourriture, Comme un vêtement que dévore la teigne?

my ears have heard and understood it.
2 What you know, I also know;
I am not inferior to you.(B)
3 But I desire to speak to the Almighty(C)
and to argue my case with God.(D)
4 You, however, smear me with lies;(E)
you are worthless physicians,(F) all of you!(G)
5 If only you would be altogether silent!(H)
For you, that would be wisdom.(I)
6 Hear now my argument;
listen to the pleas of my lips.(J)
7 Will you speak wickedly on God’s behalf?
Will you speak deceitfully for him?(K)
8 Will you show him partiality?(L)
Will you argue the case for God?
9 Would it turn out well if he examined you?(M)
Could you deceive him as you might deceive a mortal?(N)
10 He would surely call you to account
if you secretly showed partiality.(O)
11 Would not his splendor(P) terrify you?
Would not the dread of him fall on you?(Q)
12 Your maxims are proverbs of ashes;
your defenses are defenses of clay.(R)
13 “Keep silent(S) and let me speak;(T)
then let come to me what may.(U)
14 Why do I put myself in jeopardy
and take my life in my hands?(V)
15 Though he slay me, yet will I hope(W) in him;(X)
I will surely[a] defend my ways to his face.(Y)
16 Indeed, this will turn out for my deliverance,(Z)
for no godless(AA) person would dare come before him!(AB)
17 Listen carefully to what I say;(AC)
let my words ring in your ears.
18 Now that I have prepared my case,(AD)
I know I will be vindicated.(AE)
19 Can anyone bring charges against me?(AF)
If so, I will be silent(AG) and die.(AH)
20 “Only grant me these two things, God,
and then I will not hide from you:
21 Withdraw your hand(AI) far from me,
and stop frightening me with your terrors.(AJ)
22 Then summon me and I will answer,(AK)
or let me speak, and you reply to me.(AL)
23 How many wrongs and sins have I committed?(AM)
Show me my offense and my sin.(AN)
24 Why do you hide your face(AO)
and consider me your enemy?(AP)
25 Will you torment(AQ) a windblown leaf?(AR)
Will you chase(AS) after dry chaff?(AT)
26 For you write down bitter things against me
and make me reap the sins of my youth.(AU)
27 You fasten my feet in shackles;(AV)
you keep close watch on all my paths(AW)
by putting marks on the soles of my feet.
