Job’s Fourth Speech: A Response to Zophar
12 Then Job spoke again:
2 “You people really know everything, don’t you?
And when you die, wisdom will die with you!
3 Well, I know a few things myself—
and you’re no better than I am.
Who doesn’t know these things you’ve been saying?
4 Yet my friends laugh at me,
for I call on God and expect an answer.
I am a just and blameless man,
yet they laugh at me.
5 People who are at ease mock those in trouble.
They give a push to people who are stumbling.
6 But robbers are left in peace,
and those who provoke God live in safety—
though God keeps them in his power.[a]
7 “Just ask the animals, and they will teach you.
Ask the birds of the sky, and they will tell you.
8 Speak to the earth, and it will instruct you.
Let the fish in the sea speak to you.
9 For they all know
that my disaster[b] has come from the hand of the Lord.
10 For the life of every living thing is in his hand,
and the breath of every human being.
11 The ear tests the words it hears
just as the mouth distinguishes between foods.
12 Wisdom belongs to the aged,
and understanding to the old.
13 “But true wisdom and power are found in God;
counsel and understanding are his.
14 What he destroys cannot be rebuilt.
When he puts someone in prison, there is no escape.
15 If he holds back the rain, the earth becomes a desert.
If he releases the waters, they flood the earth.
16 Yes, strength and wisdom are his;
deceivers and deceived are both in his power.
17 He leads counselors away, stripped of good judgment;
wise judges become fools.
18 He removes the royal robe of kings.
They are led away with ropes around their waist.
19 He leads priests away, stripped of status;
he overthrows those with long years in power.
20 He silences the trusted adviser
and removes the insight of the elders.
21 He pours disgrace upon princes
and disarms the strong.
22 “He uncovers mysteries hidden in darkness;
he brings light to the deepest gloom.
23 He builds up nations, and he destroys them.
He expands nations, and he abandons them.
24 He strips kings of understanding
and leaves them wandering in a pathless wasteland.
25 They grope in the darkness without a light.
He makes them stagger like drunkards.

Job Answers His Critics
12 Then Job answered and said:
2 “No doubt you are the people,
And wisdom will die with you!
3 But I have [a]understanding as well as you;
I am not (A)inferior to you.
Indeed, who does not know such things as these?
4 “I(B) am one mocked by his friends,
Who (C)called on God, and He answered him,
The just and blameless who is ridiculed.
5 A [b]lamp is despised in the thought of one who is at ease;
It is made ready for (D)those whose feet slip.
6 (E)The tents of robbers prosper,
And those who provoke God are secure—
In what God provides by His hand.
7 “But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you;
And the birds of the air, and they will tell you;
8 Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you;
And the fish of the sea will explain to you.
9 Who among all these does not know
That the hand of the Lord has done this,
10 (F)In whose hand is the [c]life of every living thing,
And the (G)breath of [d]all mankind?
11 Does not the ear test words
And the [e]mouth taste its food?
12 Wisdom is with aged men,
And with [f]length of days, understanding.
13 “With Him are (H)wisdom and strength,
He has counsel and understanding.
14 If (I)He breaks a thing down, it cannot be rebuilt;
If He imprisons a man, there can be no release.
15 If He (J)withholds the waters, they dry up;
If He (K)sends them out, they overwhelm the earth.
16 With Him are strength and prudence.
The deceived and the deceiver are His.
17 He leads counselors away plundered,
And makes fools of the judges.
18 He loosens the bonds of kings,
And binds their waist with a belt.
19 He leads [g]princes away plundered,
And overthrows the mighty.
20 (L)He deprives the trusted ones of speech,
And takes away the discernment of the elders.
21 (M)He pours contempt on princes,
And [h]disarms the mighty.
22 He (N)uncovers deep things out of darkness,
And brings the shadow of death to light.
23 (O)He makes nations great, and destroys them;
He [i]enlarges nations, and guides them.
24 He takes away the [j]understanding of the chiefs of the people of the earth,
And (P)makes them wander in a pathless wilderness.
25 (Q)They grope in the dark without light,
And He makes them (R)stagger like a drunken man.

12 Job prit la parole et dit:
2 «On dirait, en vérité, que vous représentez tout le genre humain
et que la sagesse mourra avec vous.
3 J'ai tout autant d'intelligence que vous,
je ne vous suis en rien inférieur.
Du reste, qui ignore ce que vous dites?
4 »Je suis un homme dont les amis se moquent,
moi qui faisais appel à Dieu et à qui il répondait.
Le juste, l’homme intègre, un objet de moquerie!
5 ‘Il faut mépriser le malheur!’ telle est la devise des hommes heureux.
Le mépris, voilà ce qu’ils réservent à ceux dont le pied trébuche.
6 »La tranquillité règne sous les tentes des pillards,
la sécurité chez ceux qui provoquent Dieu,
chez celui qui se fait un dieu de sa force.
7 »Mais interroge donc les bêtes et elles t'enseigneront,
les oiseaux et ils te l'apprendront,
8 ou parle à la terre et elle t'enseignera,
et les poissons de la mer te le raconteront:
9 qui ne reconnaît pas, chez eux, la preuve
que c’est la main de l'Eternel qui a fait tout cela?
10 Il tient dans sa main l'âme de tout ce qui vit,
l’esprit qui anime tout être humain.
11 L'oreille ne jauge-t-elle pas les propos
et le palais ne goûte-t-il pas la nourriture?
12 De même, c’est aux personnes âgées qu’est attribuée la sagesse,
une longue vie est synonyme de discernement.
13 »C’est auprès de Dieu que se trouvent la sagesse et la puissance,
c’est à lui qu’appartiennent le conseil et l'intelligence.
14 Ce qu'il abat ne sera pas reconstruit,
l’homme qu'il enferme ne sera pas relâché.
15 Qu’il retienne l’eau et tout se dessèche,
qu’il l’envoie et c’est la dévastation pour la terre.
16 »C’est auprès de Dieu que se trouvent la force et le succès.
Il maîtrise celui qui s'égare ou fait égarer les autres.
17 C’est lui qui fait marcher les conseillers du pays dans l’humiliation,
qui affole les juges.
18 Il diminue l’autorité des rois,
il met une corde autour de leur taille.
19 C’est lui qui fait marcher les prêtres dans l’humiliation,
qui renverse les autorités les plus stables.
20 C’est lui qui enlève la parole aux orateurs habiles,
qui prive les personnes âgées de bon sens.
21 C’est lui qui déverse le mépris sur les grands,
qui prive de leurs aptitudes les hommes forts.
22 C’est lui qui révèle les profondeurs des ténèbres,
qui expose l'ombre de la mort à la lumière.
23 C’est lui qui donne de la prospérité aux nations et qui les fait disparaître,
qui élargit leur territoire et se montre leur guide.
24 C’est lui qui prive d'intelligence les chefs du pays,
qui les fait errer dans des déserts dépourvus de chemin.
25 Ils tâtonnent alors dans les ténèbres, privés de lumière,
il les fait errer comme des hommes ivres.
