Zophar Urges Job to Repent
11 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said:
2 “Should not the multitude of words be answered?
And should [a]a man full of talk be vindicated?
3 Should your empty talk make men [b]hold their peace?
And when you mock, should no one rebuke you?
4 For you have said,
(A)‘My doctrine is pure,
And I am clean in your eyes.’
5 But oh, that God would speak,
And open His lips against you,
6 That He would show you the secrets of wisdom!
For they would double your prudence.
Know therefore that (B)God [c]exacts from you
Less than your iniquity deserves.
7 “Can(C) you search out the deep things of God?
Can you find out the limits of the Almighty?
8 They are higher than heaven—what can you do?
Deeper than [d]Sheol—what can you know?
9 Their measure is longer than the earth
And broader than the sea.
10 “If(D) He passes by, imprisons, and gathers to judgment,
Then who can [e]hinder Him?
11 For (E)He knows deceitful men;
He sees wickedness also.
Will He not then consider it?
12 For an (F)empty-headed man will be wise,
When a wild donkey’s colt is born a man.
13 “If you would (G)prepare your heart,
And (H)stretch out your hands toward Him;
14 If iniquity were in your hand, and you put it far away,
And (I)would not let wickedness dwell in your tents;
15 (J)Then surely you could lift up your face without spot;
Yes, you could be steadfast, and not fear;
16 Because you would (K)forget your misery,
And remember it as waters that have passed away,
17 And your life (L)would be brighter than noonday.
Though you were dark, you would be like the morning.
18 And you would be secure, because there is hope;
Yes, you would dig around you, and (M)take your rest in safety.
19 You would also lie down, and no one would make you afraid;
Yes, many would court your favor.
20 But (N)the eyes of the wicked will fail,
And they shall not escape,
And (O)their hope—[f]loss of life!”

11 Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,
2 Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?
3 Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?
4 For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.
5 But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;
6 And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.
7 Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?
8 It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?
9 The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.
10 If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?
11 For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it?
12 For vain men would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt.
13 If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;
14 If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.
15 For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:
16 Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:
17 And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday: thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.
18 And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.
19 Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.
20 But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.

11 Då svarade Sofar från Naama:
2 Kan man lämna detta ordflöde oemotsagt?
Kan en människa rättfärdiga sig genom allt sitt prat?
3 Ska ditt tomma prat förstumma andra?
Någon borde tillrättavisa dig.
4 Du påstår dig vara ren i din undervisning
och fläckfri i Guds ögon!
5 Om ändå Gud ville tala
och säga dig vad han tänker,
6 uppenbara för dig vishetens hemligheter,
för där finns förnuft i dubbelt mått.[a]
Detta ska du veta: Gud har till och med glömt en del av din synd.
7 Kan du utforska Guds hemligheter?
Kan du finna gränser för den Väldiges fullkomlighet?
8 Den är högre än himlen,
men vad kan du göra?
Den är djupare än dödsriket,
men vad vet du?
9 Den sträcker sig längre än jorden
och vidare än havet.
10 Om han kommer och tar någon till fånga och drar inför rätta,
vem ska då hindra honom?
11 Han känner igen lögnaktiga människor
och orätt när han ser den.
12 Om en dåraktig människa kan få förstånd,
då kan en vildåsna födas som människa.[b]

och sträcker ut dina händer mot honom,
14 om du lägger bort dina händers orätt
och inte tillåter några överträdelser i dina boningar,
15 då kan du lyfta ditt huvud utan skam,
stå stadigt och utan fruktan.
16 Då kan du glömma ditt elände,
minnas det som bortrunnet vatten.
17 Ditt liv blir ljusare än dagen,
och mörkret som morgonen.
18 Du får känna dig trygg,
för där finns ett hopp.
Du kan se dig omkring
och vila tryggt.
19 Du kommer att kunna vila
utan att någon skrämmer dig,
och många kommer att vädja till din välvilja.
20 Men de ogudaktigas ögon ska tyna bort,
de ska inte finna någon möjlighet att fly undan.
Deras enda hopp är att få ge upp andan.

11 Then (A)Zophar the Naamathite answered and said:
2 “Should (B)a multitude of words go unanswered,
and a man full of talk be judged right?
3 Should your babble silence men,
and when you mock, shall no one shame you?
4 For (C)you say, ‘My (D)doctrine is pure,
and I am clean in God's[a] eyes.’
5 But oh, that God would speak
and open his lips to you,
6 and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom!
For he is manifold in (E)understanding.[b]
Know then that God (F)exacts of you less than your guilt deserves.
7 (G)“Can you find out the deep things of God?
Can you find out the limit of the Almighty?
8 It is (H)higher than heaven[c]—what can you do?
Deeper than Sheol—what can you know?
9 Its measure is longer than the earth

its darkness will be like the morning.
18 And you will feel secure, because there is hope;
you will look around and (U)take your rest in security.

all way of escape will be lost to them,
and their hope is (Y)to breathe their last.”
