Integridad y prosperidad de Job
1 Hubo un hombre en la tierra de Uz, que se llamaba Job. Aquel hombre era íntegro y recto, temeroso de Dios y apartado del mal. 2 Le nacieron siete hijos y tres hijas. 3 Poseía siete mil ovejas, tres mil camellos, quinientas yuntas de bueyes, quinientos asnos y muchísimos siervos. Y aquel hombre era el más grande de todos los orientales.
4 Sus hijos iban y celebraban un banquete en la casa de cada uno, en su día, y mandaban a llamar a sus tres hermanas para que comiesen y bebiesen con ellos. 5 Y cuando habían transcurrido los días de banquete, sucedía que Job mandaba a llamarlos y los purificaba. Levantándose muy de mañana, ofrecía holocaustos conforme al número de todos ellos. Pues decía Job: “Quizás mis hijos habrán pecado y habrán maldecido a Dios en su corazón”. De esta manera hacía continuamente.
Satanás cuestiona la integridad de Job
6 Aconteció cierto día que vinieron los hijos de Dios para presentarse ante el SEÑOR, y entre ellos vino también Satanás. 7 Y el SEÑOR le preguntó a Satanás:
—¿De dónde vienes?
Satanás respondió al SEÑOR diciendo:
—De recorrer la tierra y de andar por ella.
8 Y el SEÑOR le preguntó a Satanás:
—¿No te has fijado en mi siervo Job, que no hay otro como él en la tierra: un hombre íntegro y recto, temeroso de Dios y apartado del mal?
9 Y Satanás respondió al SEÑOR diciendo:
—¿Acaso teme Job a Dios de balde? 10 ¿Acaso no le has protegido a él, a su familia y a todo lo que tiene? El trabajo de sus manos has bendecido, y sus posesiones se han aumentado en la tierra. 11 Pero extiende, por favor, tu mano y toca todo lo que tiene, ¡y verás si no te maldice en tu misma cara!
12 Y el SEÑOR le respondió a Satanás:
—He aquí, todo lo que él tiene está en tu poder. Solamente no extiendas tu mano contra él.
Entonces Satanás salió de la presencia del SEÑOR.
Satanás arruina la casa de Job
13 Aconteció cierto día, cuando sus hijos y sus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en la casa de su hermano, el primogénito, 14 que un mensajero llegó a Job y le dijo:
—Estando los bueyes arando, y las asnas paciendo cerca de ellos, 15 cayeron de sorpresa los sabeos y se los llevaron. Y a los criados mataron a filo de espada. Solo yo escapé para darte la noticia.
16 Todavía estaba este hablando, cuando llegó otro y le dijo:
—¡Cayó del cielo fuego de Dios, y quemó las ovejas y consumió a los criados! Solo yo escapé para darte la noticia.
17 Todavía estaba este hablando, cuando llegó otro y le dijo:
—Los caldeos formaron tres escuadrones, arremetieron contra los camellos y se los llevaron. Mataron a los criados a filo de espada. Solo yo escapé para darte la noticia.
18 Todavía estaba este hablando, cuando llegó otro y le dijo:
—Tus hijos y tus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en la casa de su hermano, el primogénito. 19 Y he aquí que vino un fuerte viento del otro lado del desierto y golpeó las cuatro esquinas de la casa, la cual cayó sobre los jóvenes y murieron. Solo yo escapé para darte la noticia.
20 Entonces Job se levantó, rasgó su manto y se rapó la cabeza; se postró a tierra y adoró. 21 Y dijo:
—Desnudo salí del vientre de mi madre, y desnudo volveré allá. El SEÑOR dio, y el SEÑOR quitó. ¡Sea bendito el nombre del SEÑOR!
22 En todo esto Job no pecó ni atribuyó a Dios despropósito alguno.

Job's Character and Wealth
1 There was a man in the land of (A)Uz whose name was (B)Job, and that man was (C)blameless and upright, one who (D)feared God and (E)turned away from evil. 2 There were born to him (F)seven sons and three daughters. 3 He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was the greatest of all (G)the people of the east. 4 His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and (H)consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and (I)offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and (J)cursed[a] God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.
Satan Allowed to Test Job
6 Now there was a day when (K)the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and (L)Satan[b] also came among them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From (M)going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” 8 And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you (N)considered my (O)servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, (P)a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” 9 Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? 10 Have you not put (Q)a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have (R)blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But (S)stretch out your hand and (T)touch all that he has, and he will (U)curse you (V)to your face.” 12 And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
Satan Takes Job's Property and Children
13 Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, 14 and there came a messenger to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15 and (W)the Sabeans fell upon them and took them and struck down the servants[c] with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, (X)“The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 17 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, (Y)“The Chaldeans formed (Z)three groups and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 18 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, (AA)“Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, 19 and behold, a great wind came across (AB)the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
20 Then Job arose and (AC)tore his (AD)robe and (AE)shaved his head (AF)and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, (AG)“Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I (AH)return. The Lord (AI)gave, and the Lord has taken away; (AJ)blessed be the name of the Lord.”
22 (AK)In all this Job did not sin or charge God with (AL)wrong.

Prologue
1 In the land of Uz(A) there lived a man whose name was Job.(B) This man was blameless(C) and upright;(D) he feared God(E) and shunned evil.(F) 2 He had seven sons(G) and three daughters,(H) 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys,(I) and had a large number of servants.(J) He was the greatest man(K) among all the people of the East.(L)
4 His sons used to hold feasts(M) in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified.(N) Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering(O) for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned(P) and cursed God(Q) in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.
6 One day the angels[a](R) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b](S) also came with them.(T) 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”
Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”(U)
8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job?(V) There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God(W) and shuns evil.”(X)
9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?”(Y) Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge(Z) around him and his household and everything he has?(AA) You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.(AB) 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has,(AC) and he will surely curse you to your face.”(AD)
12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has(AE) is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”(AF)
Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters(AG) were feasting(AH) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing(AI) nearby, 15 and the Sabeans(AJ) attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens(AK) and burned up the sheep and the servants,(AL) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans(AM) formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters(AN) were feasting(AO) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind(AP) swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead,(AQ) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!(AR)”
20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe(AS) and shaved his head.(AT) Then he fell to the ground in worship(AU) 21 and said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.[c](AV)
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;(AW)
may the name of the Lord be praised.”(AX)
22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.(AY)
