La vida intachable de Job
1 En el país de Uz había un hombre llamado Job. Era honesto e intachable, respetaba a Dios y no le hacía mal a nadie. 2 Job tenía siete hijos y tres hijas. 3 Tenía, además, 7000 ovejas, 3000 camellos, 500 yuntas de bueyes, 500 burras y muchos siervos. Era el hombre más rico del oriente.
4 Los hijos de Job tomaban turno para hacer banquetes en la casa de cada uno de ellos, a los cuales invitaban a sus tres hermanas para comer y beber con ellos. 5 Al terminar cada ronda de banquetes, Job les mandaba instrucciones a sus hijos para que se purificaran, y levantándose de madrugada ofrecía un sacrificio que debe quemarse completamente por cada uno de sus hijos, pues Job pensaba que tal vez sus hijos pudieran haber pecado y maldecido[a] a Dios con su pensamiento.
6 Entonces llegó el día en que los seres celestiales[b] se presentaron ante el SEÑOR, incluso Satanás[c] estaba allí con ellos. 7 El SEÑOR le dijo a Satanás:
—¿Dónde has estado?
Y Satanás le respondió al SEÑOR:
—He estado vagando por la tierra.
8 Entonces el SEÑOR le dijo a Satanás:
—¿Te has fijado en mi siervo Job? No hay nadie en la tierra como él. Job es un hombre intachable, honesto, respeta a Dios y rechaza el mal.
9 Satanás le respondió al SEÑOR:
—¿Pero es que Job respeta a Dios por nada? 10 ¿Acaso no lo proteges a él, a su familia y a sus posesiones? Haces que le vaya bien en todo lo que hace, y sus rebaños se ven por todo el país. 11 Pero si le quitaras todo lo que tiene, seguro que te maldeciría en tu propia cara.
12 El SEÑOR le dijo a Satanás:
—Puedes hacer lo que quieras con lo que le pertenece a Job, pero a él mismo no le hagas daño.
Entonces Satanás se retiró de la presencia del SEÑOR.
13 Un día en que los hijos e hijas de Job estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en casa del hermano mayor, 14 llegó un mensajero, se acercó a Job y le dijo:
—Tus bueyes estaban arando y tus mulas estaban pastando cerca, 15 cuando los sabeanos[d] atacaron y se los llevaron. Asesinaron a tus siervos a espada. Yo fui el único que pudo escapar para contártelo.
16 Mientras este mensajero todavía estaba hablando, llegó otro y le dijo a Job:
—Cayó un rayo del cielo e incineró a tus ovejas y a tus trabajadores. Yo fui el único que pudo escapar para contártelo.
17 Mientras este mensajero todavía estaba hablando, llegó otro y le dijo a Job:
—Los caldeos[e] enviaron tres grupos de soldados que nos atacaron, se llevaron los camellos y mataron a todos tus servidores a filo de espada. Yo fui el único que pudo escapar para contártelo.
18 Mientras este mensajero todavía estaba hablando, llegó otro y le dijo a Job:
—Tus hijos y tus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en la casa de tu hijo mayor, 19 de repente, sopló un fuerte viento desde el desierto y destruyó la casa. La casa cayó sobre ellos y todos murieron. Yo fui el único que pudo escapar para contártelo.
20 Cuando Job escuchó todo esto, rasgó su ropa y luego se rapó la cabeza. Después se postró en tierra en actitud de adoración 21 y dijo:
«Desnudo salí del vientre de mi mamá
y desnudo saldré de este mundo.
El SEÑOR dio y el SEÑOR quitó.
Alabado sea el nombre del SEÑOR».
22 Job no cometió ningún pecado en lo que dijo ni le reprochó a Dios lo que había pasado.

- 1:5 maldecido Textualmente bendecido. Los copistas tenían miedo de escribir expresiones como «maldecir a Dios», así que colocaban bendecir confiando en que por el contexto el lector supiera que en realidad se trataba de maldecir.
- 1:6 seres celestiales Textualmente hijos de Dios. Expresión generalmente usada en el Antiguo Testamento para referirse a los ángeles. Igual en 2:1.

Prólogo
1 En la región de Uz había un hombre íntegro e intachable que temía a Dios y vivía apartado del mal. Este hombre se llamaba Job. 2 Tenía siete hijos y tres hijas. 3 Era dueño de siete mil ovejas, tres mil camellos, quinientas yuntas de bueyes y quinientas asnas; además, su servidumbre era muy numerosa. Entre todos los habitantes del oriente era el personaje de mayor renombre.
4 Sus hijos acostumbraban a turnarse para celebrar banquetes el día de sus cumpleaños e invitaban a sus tres hermanas a comer y beber con ellos. 5 Una vez terminado el ciclo de los banquetes, Job se aseguraba de que sus hijos se purificaran delante de Dios. Muy de mañana ofrecía un holocausto por cada uno de ellos, pues pensaba: «Tal vez mis hijos hayan pecado y maldecido[a] en sus corazones[b] a Dios». Para Job esta era una costumbre cotidiana.
Primera prueba de Job
6 Llegó el día en que los hijos de Dios debían presentarse ante el Señor y con ellos llegó también Satanás. 7 Y el Señor preguntó:
—¿De dónde vienes?
—Vengo de rondar la tierra y de recorrerla de un extremo a otro —respondió Satanás.
8 —¿Te has puesto a pensar en mi siervo Job? —volvió a preguntarle el Señor—. No hay en la tierra nadie como él; es un hombre íntegro e intachable, que me honra y vive apartado del mal.
9 Satanás respondió:
—¿Y acaso Job te honra sin esperar nada a cambio? 10 ¿Acaso no están bajo tu protección él y su familia y todas sus posesiones? De tal modo has bendecido la obra de sus manos que sus rebaños y ganados llenan toda la tierra. 11 Pero extiende la mano y daña todo lo que posee, ¡a ver si no te maldice en tu propia cara!
12 —Muy bien —contestó el Señor—. Todas sus posesiones están en tus manos, con la condición de que a él no le pongas la mano encima.
Dicho esto, Satanás se retiró de la presencia del Señor.
13 Llegó el día en que los hijos y las hijas de Job celebraban un banquete en casa de su hermano mayor. 14 Entonces un mensajero llegó a decirle a Job: «Mientras los bueyes araban y los asnos pastaban por allí cerca, 15 nos atacaron los de Sabá y se los llevaron. A los criados los mataron a filo de espada. ¡Solo yo pude escapar y ahora vengo a contárselo!».
16 No había terminado de hablar este mensajero cuando uno más llegó y dijo: «El fuego de Dios cayó del cielo y quemó a las ovejas y a los criados. ¡Solo yo pude escapar para venir a contárselo!».
17 No había terminado de hablar este mensajero cuando otro más llegó y dijo: «Unos salteadores caldeos vinieron y, dividiéndose en tres grupos, se apoderaron de los camellos y se los llevaron. A los criados los mataron a filo de espada. ¡Solo yo pude escapar y ahora vengo a contárselo!».
18 No había terminado de hablar este mensajero todavía cuando otro llegó y dijo: «Los hijos y las hijas de usted estaban celebrando un banquete[c] en casa del mayor de todos ellos 19 cuando, de pronto, un fuerte viento del desierto dio contra la casa y derribó sus cuatro esquinas. ¡La casa cayó sobre los jóvenes y todos murieron! ¡Solo yo pude escapar y ahora vengo a contárselo!».
20 Al llegar a este punto, Job se levantó, se rasgó las vestiduras, se rasuró la cabeza y se dejó caer al suelo en actitud de adoración. 21 Entonces dijo:
«Desnudo salí del vientre de mi madre
y desnudo he de partir.[d]
El Señor ha dado; el Señor ha quitado.
¡Bendito sea el nombre del Señor!».
22 A pesar de todo esto, Job no pecó ni le echó la culpa a Dios.

Las calamidades de Job
1 Hubo en tierra de Uz un varón llamado Job; y era este hombre perfecto y recto, temeroso de Dios y apartado del mal. 2 Y le nacieron siete hijos y tres hijas. 3 Su hacienda era siete mil ovejas, tres mil camellos, quinientas yuntas de bueyes, quinientas asnas, y muchísimos criados; y era aquel varón más grande que todos los orientales. 4 E iban sus hijos y hacían banquetes en sus casas, cada uno en su día; y enviaban a llamar a sus tres hermanas para que comiesen y bebiesen con ellos. 5 Y acontecía que habiendo pasado en turno los días del convite, Job enviaba y los santificaba, y se levantaba de mañana y ofrecía holocaustos conforme al número de todos ellos. Porque decía Job: Quizá habrán pecado mis hijos, y habrán blasfemado contra Dios en sus corazones. De esta manera hacía todos los días.
6 Un día vinieron a presentarse delante de Jehová los hijos de Dios, entre los cuales vino también Satanás. 7 Y dijo Jehová a Satanás: ¿De dónde vienes? Respondiendo Satanás a Jehová, dijo: De rodear la tierra y de andar por ella. 8 Y Jehová dijo a Satanás: ¿No has considerado a mi siervo Job, que no hay otro como él en la tierra, varón perfecto y recto, temeroso de Dios y apartado del mal? 9 Respondiendo Satanás a Jehová, dijo: ¿Acaso teme Job a Dios de balde? 10 ¿No le has cercado alrededor a él y a su casa y a todo lo que tiene? Al trabajo de sus manos has dado bendición; por tanto, sus bienes han aumentado sobre la tierra. 11 Pero extiende ahora tu mano y toca todo lo que tiene, y verás si no blasfema contra ti en tu misma presencia.(A) 12 Dijo Jehová a Satanás: He aquí, todo lo que tiene está en tu mano; solamente no pongas tu mano sobre él. Y salió Satanás de delante de Jehová.
13 Y un día aconteció que sus hijos e hijas comían y bebían vino en casa de su hermano el primogénito, 14 y vino un mensajero a Job, y le dijo: Estaban arando los bueyes, y las asnas paciendo cerca de ellos, 15 y acometieron los sabeos y los tomaron, y mataron a los criados a filo de espada; solamente escapé yo para darte la noticia. 16 Aún estaba este hablando, cuando vino otro que dijo: Fuego de Dios cayó del cielo, que quemó las ovejas y a los pastores, y los consumió; solamente escapé yo para darte la noticia. 17 Todavía estaba este hablando, y vino otro que dijo: Los caldeos hicieron tres escuadrones, y arremetieron contra los camellos y se los llevaron, y mataron a los criados a filo de espada; y solamente escapé yo para darte la noticia. 18 Entre tanto que este hablaba, vino otro que dijo: Tus hijos y tus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en casa de su hermano el primogénito; 19 y un gran viento vino del lado del desierto y azotó las cuatro esquinas de la casa, la cual cayó sobre los jóvenes, y murieron; y solamente escapé yo para darte la noticia. 20 Entonces Job se levantó, y rasgó su manto, y rasuró su cabeza, y se postró en tierra y adoró, 21 y dijo: Desnudo salí del vientre de mi madre, y desnudo volveré allá. Jehová dio, y Jehová quitó; sea el nombre de Jehová bendito. 22 En todo esto no pecó Job, ni atribuyó a Dios despropósito alguno.

Prologue
1 In the land of Uz(A) there lived a man whose name was Job.(B) This man was blameless(C) and upright;(D) he feared God(E) and shunned evil.(F) 2 He had seven sons(G) and three daughters,(H) 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys,(I) and had a large number of servants.(J) He was the greatest man(K) among all the people of the East.(L)
4 His sons used to hold feasts(M) in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified.(N) Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering(O) for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned(P) and cursed God(Q) in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.
6 One day the angels[a](R) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b](S) also came with them.(T) 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”
Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”(U)
8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job?(V) There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God(W) and shuns evil.”(X)
9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?”(Y) Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge(Z) around him and his household and everything he has?(AA) You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.(AB) 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has,(AC) and he will surely curse you to your face.”(AD)
12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has(AE) is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”(AF)
Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters(AG) were feasting(AH) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing(AI) nearby, 15 and the Sabeans(AJ) attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens(AK) and burned up the sheep and the servants,(AL) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans(AM) formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters(AN) were feasting(AO) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind(AP) swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead,(AQ) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!(AR)”
20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe(AS) and shaved his head.(AT) Then he fell to the ground in worship(AU) 21 and said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.[c](AV)
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;(AW)
may the name of the Lord be praised.”(AX)
22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.(AY)

3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
4 And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them.
7 And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
8 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9 Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
12 And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.
13 And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
14 And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
15 And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
19 And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.
22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
