1 Hubo un hombre en la tierra de Uz(A) llamado Job(B). Aquel hombre era intachable[a], recto(C), temeroso de[b] Dios(D) y apartado del mal(E). 2 Le nacieron siete hijos y tres hijas(F). 3 Su hacienda era de 7,000 ovejas, 3,000 camellos, 500 yuntas de bueyes, 500 asnas(G) y muchísima servidumbre. Aquel hombre era el más grande(H) de todos los hijos del oriente.
4 Sus hijos acostumbraban ir y hacer un banquete en la casa de cada uno por turno, e invitaban[c] a sus tres hermanas para comer y beber con ellos. 5 Cuando los días del banquete habían pasado[d], Job enviaba a buscarlos y los santificaba, y levantándose temprano, ofrecía holocaustos(I) conforme al número de todos ellos. Porque Job decía: «Quizá mis hijos hayan pecado(J) y maldecido a Dios en sus corazones(K)». Job siempre hacía así.
6 Un día, cuando los hijos de Dios vinieron a presentarse delante del Señor(L), Satanás[e] vino también entre ellos(M). 7 Y el Señor preguntó a Satanás: «¿De dónde vienes?». Entonces Satanás respondió al Señor: «De recorrer la tierra y de andar por ella(N)». 8 Y el Señor dijo a Satanás: «¿Te has fijado[f] en Mi siervo Job(O)? Porque no hay ninguno como él sobre la tierra; es un hombre intachable[g] y recto, temeroso de[h] Dios y apartado del mal(P)». 9 Satanás respondió(Q) al Señor[i]: «¿Acaso teme Job a Dios de balde? 10 ¿No has hecho Tú una valla alrededor de él, de su casa y de todo lo que tiene, por todos lados(R)? Has bendecido el trabajo de sus manos(S) y sus posesiones han aumentado en la tierra(T). 11 Pero extiende ahora Tu mano y toca todo lo que tiene(U), y verás si no te maldice en Tu misma cara(V)». 12 Entonces el Señor dijo a Satanás: «Todo lo que él tiene está en tu poder[j]; pero no extiendas tu mano sobre él». Y Satanás salió de la presencia del Señor.
Dios permite las pruebas de Job
13 Y aconteció que un[k] día en que los hijos y las hijas de Job estaban comiendo y bebiendo en la casa del hermano mayor, 14 vino un mensajero a Job y le dijo: «Los bueyes estaban arando y las asnas paciendo junto a ellos, 15 y los sabeos[l](W) atacaron[m] y se los llevaron. También mataron[n] a los criados a filo de espada. Solo yo[o] escapé para contárselo a usted». 16 Mientras estaba este hablando, vino otro y dijo: «Fuego de Dios cayó del cielo y quemó las ovejas y a los criados y los consumió(X); solo yo escapé para contárselo a usted». 17 Mientras este estaba hablando, vino otro y dijo: «Los caldeos(Y) formaron tres cuadrillas, se lanzaron sobre los camellos y se los llevaron, y mataron[p] a los criados a filo de espada. Solo yo escapé para contárselo a usted». 18 Mientras este estaba hablando, vino otro y dijo: «Sus hijos y sus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en la casa del hermano mayor, 19 y entonces vino un gran viento del otro lado del desierto y azotó las cuatro esquinas de la casa, y esta cayó sobre los jóvenes y murieron; solo yo escapé para contárselo a usted».
20 Entonces Job se levantó, rasgó su manto, se rasuró la cabeza, y postrándose en tierra(Z), adoró, 21 y dijo:
«Desnudo salí del vientre de mi madre
Y desnudo volveré allá(AA).
El Señor dio y el Señor quitó(AB);
Bendito sea el nombre del Señor».
22 En todo esto Job no pecó ni culpó[q] a Dios(AC).

I. PROLOGO
Satana mette Giobbe alla prova
1 C'era nella terra di Uz un uomo chiamato Giobbe: uomo integro e retto, temeva Dio ed era alieno dal male. 2 Gli erano nati sette figli e tre figlie; 3 possedeva settemila pecore e tremila cammelli, cinquecento paia di buoi e cinquecento asine, e molto numerosa era la sua servitù. Quest'uomo era il più grande fra tutti i figli d'oriente.
4 Ora i suoi figli solevano andare a fare banchetti in casa di uno di loro, ciascuno nel suo giorno, e mandavano a invitare anche le loro tre sorelle per mangiare e bere insieme. 5 Quando avevano compiuto il turno dei giorni del banchetto, Giobbe li mandava a chiamare per purificarli; si alzava di buon mattino e offriva olocausti secondo il numero di tutti loro. Giobbe infatti pensava: «Forse i miei figli hanno peccato e hanno offeso Dio nel loro cuore». Così faceva Giobbe ogni volta.
6 Un giorno, i figli di Dio andarono a presentarsi davanti al Signore e anche satana andò in mezzo a loro. 7 Il Signore chiese a satana: «Da dove vieni?». Satana rispose al Signore: «Da un giro sulla terra, che ho percorsa». 8 Il Signore disse a satana: «Hai posto attenzione al mio servo Giobbe? Nessuno è come lui sulla terra: uomo integro e retto, teme Dio ed è alieno dal male». 9 Satana rispose al Signore e disse: «Forse che Giobbe teme Dio per nulla? 10 Non hai forse messo una siepe intorno a lui e alla sua casa e a tutto quanto è suo? Tu hai benedetto il lavoro delle sue mani e il suo bestiame abbonda di terra. 11 Ma stendi un poco la mano e tocca quanto ha e vedrai come ti benedirà in faccia!». 12 Il Signore disse a satana: «Ecco, quanto possiede è in tuo potere, ma non stender la mano su di lui». Satana si allontanò dal Signore.
13 Ora accadde che un giorno, mentre i suoi figli e le sue figlie stavano mangiando e bevendo in casa del fratello maggiore, 14 un messaggero venne da Giobbe e gli disse: «I buoi stavano arando e le asine pascolando vicino ad essi, 15 quando i Sabei sono piombati su di essi e li hanno predati e hanno passato a fil di spada i guardiani. Sono scampato io solo che ti racconto questo».
16 Mentr'egli ancora parlava, entrò un altro e disse: «Un fuoco divino è caduto dal cielo: si è attaccato alle pecore e ai guardiani e li ha divorati. Sono scampato io solo che ti racconto questo».
17 Mentr'egli ancora parlava, entrò un altro e disse: «I Caldei hanno formato tre bande: si sono gettati sopra i cammelli e li hanno presi e hanno passato a fil di spada i guardiani. Sono scampato io solo che ti racconto questo».
18 Mentr'egli ancora parlava, entrò un altro e disse: «I tuoi figli e le tue figlie stavano mangiando e bevendo in casa del loro fratello maggiore, 19 quand'ecco un vento impetuoso si è scatenato da oltre il deserto: ha investito i quattro lati della casa, che è rovinata sui giovani e sono morti. Sono scampato io solo che ti racconto questo».
20 Allora Giobbe si alzò e si stracciò le vesti, si rase il capo, cadde a terra, si prostrò 21 e disse:
«Nudo uscii dal seno di mia madre,
e nudo vi ritornerò.
Il Signore ha dato, il Signore ha tolto,
sia benedetto il nome del Signore!».
22 In tutto questo Giobbe non peccò e non attribuì a Dio nulla di ingiusto.

Prologue
1 In the land of Uz(A) there lived a man whose name was Job.(B) This man was blameless(C) and upright;(D) he feared God(E) and shunned evil.(F) 2 He had seven sons(G) and three daughters,(H) 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys,(I) and had a large number of servants.(J) He was the greatest man(K) among all the people of the East.(L)
4 His sons used to hold feasts(M) in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified.(N) Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering(O) for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned(P) and cursed God(Q) in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.
6 One day the angels[a](R) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b](S) also came with them.(T) 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”
Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”(U)
8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job?(V) There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God(W) and shuns evil.”(X)
9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?”(Y) Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge(Z) around him and his household and everything he has?(AA) You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.(AB) 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has,(AC) and he will surely curse you to your face.”(AD)
12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has(AE) is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”(AF)
Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters(AG) were feasting(AH) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing(AI) nearby, 15 and the Sabeans(AJ) attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens(AK) and burned up the sheep and the servants,(AL) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans(AM) formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters(AN) were feasting(AO) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind(AP) swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead,(AQ) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!(AR)”
20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe(AS) and shaved his head.(AT) Then he fell to the ground in worship(AU) 21 and said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.[c](AV)
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;(AW)
may the name of the Lord be praised.”(AX)
22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.(AY)
