1 Hubo un varón en tierra de Uz, llamado Job; y era este hombre perfecto y recto, temeroso de Dios, y apartado del mal.
2 Y le nacieron siete hijos y tres hijas.
3 Y su hacienda era siete mil ovejas, tres mil camellos, quinientas yuntas de bueyes, quinientas asnas, y muchísimos criados; y era aquel varón más grande que todos los orientales.
4 E iban sus hijos y hacían banquetes en sus casas, cada uno en su día; y enviaban a llamar a sus tres hermanas, para que comieren y bebieren con ellos.
5 Y acontecía que, habiendo pasado en turno los días de sus banquetes, Job enviaba y los santificaba, y se levantaba de mañana y ofrecía holocaustos conforme al número de todos ellos. Porque decía Job: Por ventura habrán pecado mis hijos, y habrán blasfemado a Dios en sus corazones. De esta manera hacía Job todos los días.
6 Y un día vinieron los hijos de Dios a presentarse delante del SEÑOR, entre los cuales vino también Satanás.
7 Y dijo el SEÑOR a Satanás: ¿De dónde vienes? Y respondiendo Satanás al SEÑOR, dijo: De rodear la tierra, y de andar por ella.
8 Y el SEÑOR dijo a Satanás: ¿No has considerado a mi esclavo Job, que no hay otro como él en la tierra, varón perfecto y recto, temeroso de Dios, y apartado de mal?
9 Y respondiendo Satanás al SEÑOR, dijo: ¿Teme Job a Dios de balde?
10 ¿No le has tú cercado a él, y a su casa, y a todo lo que tiene en derredor? Al trabajo de sus manos has dado bendición; por tanto su hacienda ha crecido sobre la tierra.
11 Mas extiende ahora tu mano, y toca todo lo que tiene, y verás si no te blasfema en tu rostro.
12 Y dijo el SEÑOR a Satanás: He aquí, todo lo que tiene está en tu mano; solamente no pongas tu mano sobre él. Y salió Satanás de delante del SEÑOR.
13 ¶ Y un día aconteció que sus hijos e hijas comían y bebían vino en casa de su hermano el primogénito,
14 y vino un mensajero a Job, que le dijo: Estaban arando los bueyes, y las asnas paciendo cerca de ellos,
15 y acometieron los sabeos, y los tomaron, e hirieron a los criados a filo de espada; solamente escapé yo para traerte las nuevas.
16 Aun estaba éste hablando, y vino otro que dijo: Fuego de Dios cayó del cielo, que quemó las ovejas y los criados, y los consumió; solamente escapé yo para traerte las nuevas.
17 Todavía estaba éste hablando, y vino otro que dijo: Los caldeos hicieron tres escuadrones, y dieron sobre los camellos, y los tomaron, e hirieron a los criados a filo de espada; y solamente escapé yo para traerte las nuevas.
18 Entre tanto que éste hablaba, vino otro que dijo: Tus hijos y tus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en casa de su hermano el primogénito;
19 y he aquí un gran viento que vino del lado del desierto, e hirió las cuatro esquinas de la casa, y cayó sobre los jóvenes, y murieron; y solamente escapé yo para traerte las nuevas.
20 ¶ Entonces Job se levantó, y rasgó su manto, y trasquiló su cabeza, y cayendo en tierra adoró;
21 y dijo: Desnudo salí del vientre de mi madre, y desnudo tornaré allá. El SEÑOR dio, y el SEÑOR quitó; sea el nombre del SEÑOR bendito.
22 En todo esto no pecó Job, ni atribuyó locura a Dios.

1 There lived in the land of Uz a man named Job—a good[a] man who feared God and stayed away from evil. 2-3 He had a large family of seven sons and three daughters and was immensely wealthy,[b] for he owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 teams of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and employed many servants. He was, in fact, the richest cattleman in that entire area.
4 Every year when Job’s sons had birthdays, they invited their brothers and sisters to their homes for a celebration. On these occasions they would eat and drink with great merriment. 5 When these birthday parties ended—and sometimes they lasted several days—Job would summon his children to him and sanctify them, getting up early in the morning and offering a burnt offering for each of them. For Job said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and turned away from God[c] in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular practice.
6 One day as the angels[d] came to present themselves before the Lord, Satan, the Accuser, came with them.
7 “Where have you come from?” the Lord asked Satan.
And Satan replied, “From earth, where I’ve been watching everything that’s going on.”
8 Then the Lord asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth—a good man[e] who fears God and will have nothing to do with evil.”
9 “Why shouldn’t he when you pay him so well?” Satan scoffed. 10 “You have always protected him and his home and his property from all harm. You have prospered everything he does—look how rich he is! No wonder he ‘worships’ you! 11 But just take away his wealth, and you’ll see him curse you to your face!”
12-13 And the Lord replied to Satan, “You may do anything you like with his wealth, but don’t harm him physically.”
So Satan went away; and sure enough, not long afterwards when Job’s sons and daughters were dining at the oldest brother’s house, tragedy struck.
14-15 A messenger rushed to Job’s home with this news: “Your oxen were plowing, with the donkeys feeding beside them, when the Sabeans raided us, drove away the animals, and killed all the farmhands except me. I am the only one left.”
16 While this messenger was still speaking, another arrived with more bad news: “The fire of God has fallen from heaven and burned up your sheep and all the herdsmen, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
17 Before this man finished, still another messenger rushed in: “Three bands of Chaldeans have driven off your camels and killed your servants, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
18 As he was still speaking, another arrived to say, “Your sons and daughters were feasting in their oldest brother’s home, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and engulfed the house so that the roof fell in on them and all are dead; and I alone escaped to tell you.”
20 Then Job stood up and tore his robe in grief[f] and fell down upon the ground before God. 21 “I came naked from my mother’s womb,” he said, “and I shall have nothing when I die. The Lord gave me everything I had, and they were his to take away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
22 In all of this Job did not sin or revile God.

1 In the land of Uz(A) there lived a man whose name was Job.(B) This man was blameless(C) and upright;(D) he feared God(E) and shunned evil.(F) 2 He had seven sons(G) and three daughters,(H) 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys,(I) and had a large number of servants.(J) He was the greatest man(K) among all the people of the East.(L)
4 His sons used to hold feasts(M) in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified.(N) Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering(O) for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned(P) and cursed God(Q) in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.
6 One day the angels[a](R) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b](S) also came with them.(T) 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”
Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”(U)
8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job?(V) There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God(W) and shuns evil.”(X)
9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?”(Y) Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge(Z) around him and his household and everything he has?(AA) You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.(AB) 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has,(AC) and he will surely curse you to your face.”(AD)
12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has(AE) is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”(AF)
Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters(AG) were feasting(AH) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing(AI) nearby, 15 and the Sabeans(AJ) attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens(AK) and burned up the sheep and the servants,(AL) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans(AM) formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters(AN) were feasting(AO) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind(AP) swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead,(AQ) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!(AR)”
20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe(AS) and shaved his head.(AT) Then he fell to the ground in worship(AU) 21 and said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.[c](AV)
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;(AW)
may the name of the Lord be praised.”(AX)
22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.(AY)
