Job
1 1 The holiness, riches, and care of Job for his children. 10 Satan hath permission to tempt him. 13 He tempteth him by taking away his substance, and his children. 20 His faith and patience.
1 There was a man in the land of [a]Uz called Job, and this man [b]was an upright and just man, [c]one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
2 And he had seven sons, and three daughters.
3 His [d]substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and his family was very great, so that this man was the greatest of all the [e]men of [f]the East.
4 And his sons went and banqueted in their houses, every one his day, and sent, and called their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5 And when the days of their banqueting were gone about, Job sent, and [g]sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and [h]offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job thought, It may be that my sons have sinned, and [i]blasphemed God in their hearts, thus did Job [j]every day.
6 ¶ Now on a day when the [k]children of God came and stood [l]before the Lord, Satan [m]came also among them.
7 Then the Lord said unto Satan, Whence [n]comest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, saying, [o]From compassing the earth to and fro, and from walking in it.
8 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou not considered my servant Job, how none is like him in the earth? an upright and just man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9 Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for [p]nought?
10 Hast thou not made [q]an hedge about him and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11 But stretch out now thine hand and [r]touch all that he hath, to see if he will not blaspheme thee [s]to thy face.
12 Then the Lord said unto Satan, Lo, all that he hath is in [t]thine hand: only upon himself shalt thou not stretch out thine hand. So Satan departed from the [u]presence of the Lord.
13 ¶ And on a day, when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house,
14 There came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding in their places,
15 And the [v]Sabeans came violently, and took them: yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword: but I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
16 And while he was yet speaking, another came, and said, The [w]fire of God is fallen from the heaven, and hath burnt up the sheep and the servants, and devoured them: but I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
17 And while he was yet speaking, another came, and said, The Chaldeans set on three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them, and have slain the servants with the edge of the sword: but I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
18 And while he was yet speaking, came another, and said, Thy [x]sons, and thy daughters were eating, and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house,
19 And behold, there came a great wind from beyond the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, which fell upon the children, and they are dead, and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
20 Then Job arose, and [y]rent his garment, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
21 And said, (A)Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return [z]thither: the Lord hath given, and the Lord hath taken it: [aa]blessed be the Name of the Lord.
22 In all this did not Job sin, nor charge God [ab]foolishly.

- Job 1:1 That is, of the country of Idumea, as Lam. 4:21, or bordering thereupon: for the land was called by the name of Uz, the son of Dishan the son of Seir, Gen. 36:28.
- Job 1:1 Forasmuch as he was a Gentile, and not a Jew, and yet is pronounced upright, and without hypocrisy, it declareth that among the heathen God hath his.

Propăşirea lui Iov
1 Era în ţara(A) Uţ un om care se numea Iov(B). Şi omul acesta era fără prihană(C) şi curat la suflet. El se temea(D) de Dumnezeu şi se abătea de la rău. 2 I s-au născut şapte fii şi trei fete. 3 Avea şapte mii de oi, trei mii de cămile, cinci sute de perechi de boi, cinci sute de măgăriţe şi un foarte mare număr de slujitori. Şi omul acesta era cel mai cu vază dintre toţi locuitorii Răsăritului. 4 Fiii săi se duceau unii la alţii şi dădeau, rând pe rând, câte un ospăţ. Şi pofteau şi pe cele trei surori ale lor să mănânce şi să bea împreună cu ei. 5 Şi, după ce treceau zilele de ospăţ, Iov chema şi sfinţea pe fiii săi: se scula dis-de-dimineaţă şi aducea pentru fiecare din ei câte o ardere-de-tot(E). Căci zicea Iov: „Poate că fiii mei au păcătuit şi au supărat(F) pe Dumnezeu în inima lor.” Aşa avea Iov obicei să facă.
Satana cere să se atingă de Iov
6 Fiii lui Dumnezeu au venit(G) într-o zi(H) de s-au înfăţişat înaintea Domnului. Şi a venit şi Satana în mijlocul lor. 7 Domnul a zis Satanei: „De unde vii?” Şi Satana a răspuns Domnului: „De la cutreierarea(I) pământului şi de la plimbarea pe care am făcut-o pe el.” 8 Domnul a zis Satanei: „Ai văzut(J) pe robul Meu Iov? Nu este nimeni ca el pe pământ. Este un om fără prihană(K) şi curat la suflet, care se teme de Dumnezeu şi se abate de la rău.” 9 Şi Satana a răspuns Domnului: „Oare degeaba se teme Iov de Dumnezeu? 10 Nu l-ai(L) ocrotit Tu pe el, casa lui şi tot ce este al lui? Ai binecuvântat lucrul(M) mâinilor lui şi turmele lui acoperă ţara. 11 Dar ia întinde-Ţi(N) mâna şi atinge-Te de tot ce are, şi sunt încredinţat că Te va blestema(O) în faţă.” 12 Domnul a zis Satanei: „Iată, îţi dau pe mână tot ce are, numai asupra lui să nu întinzi mâna.”
Şi Satana a plecat dinaintea Domnului.
Răbdarea lui Iov
13 Într-o zi, pe când fiii şi fiicele(P) lui Iov mâncau şi beau vin în casa fratelui lor întâi născut, 14 a venit la Iov un sol, care a zis: „Boii arau şi măgăriţele păşteau lângă ei. 15 Şi s-au aruncat nişte sabeeni asupra lor, i-au luat şi au trecut pe slujitori prin ascuţişul sabiei. Numai eu am scăpat, ca să-ţi dau de ştire.” 16 Pe când vorbea el încă, a venit un altul şi a zis: „Focul lui Dumnezeu a căzut din cer şi a aprins oile şi pe slujitorii tăi şi i-a ars de tot. Numai eu am scăpat, ca să-ţi dau de ştire.” 17 Pe când vorbea el încă, a venit un altul şi a zis: „Nişte haldeeni, înşiraţi în trei cete, s-au aruncat asupra cămilelor, le-au luat şi au trecut pe slujitori prin ascuţişul sabiei. Numai eu am scăpat, ca să-ţi dau de ştire.” 18 Pe când vorbea el încă, a venit un altul şi a zis: „Fiii(Q) tăi şi fiicele tale mâncau şi beau vin în casa fratelui lor întâi născut. 19 Şi deodată, a venit un vânt mare de dincolo de pustie şi a izbit în cele patru colţuri ale casei; casa s-a prăbuşit peste tineri şi au murit. Şi am scăpat numai eu, ca să-ţi dau de ştire.” 20 Atunci, Iov s-a sculat, şi-a sfâşiat(R) mantaua şi şi-a tuns capul. Apoi, aruncându-se(S) la pământ, s-a închinat 21 şi a zis: „Gol(T) am ieşit din pântecele mamei mele şi gol mă voi întoarce în sânul pământului. Domnul a dat(U) şi Domnul a luat(V). Binecuvântat(W) fie Numele Domnului!” 22 În toate(X) acestea, Iov n-a păcătuit deloc şi n-a vorbit nimic necuviincios împotriva lui Dumnezeu.
