(A)Now there was a day when the [a](B)sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and [b]Satan also came among them. The Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “(C)From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.”

12 How you have (A)fallen from heaven,
You [a](B)star of the morning, son of the dawn!
You have been cut down to the earth,
You who defeated the nations!
13 But you said in your heart,
‘I will (C)ascend to heaven;
I will (D)raise my throne above the stars of God,
And I will sit on the mount of assembly
In the recesses of the north.
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;
(E)I will make myself like the Most High.’
15 Nevertheless you (F)will be brought down to Sheol,
To the recesses of the pit.
16 Those who see you will stare at you,
They will [b]closely examine you, saying,
‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble,
Who shook kingdoms,
17 Who made the world like a (G)wilderness
And overthrew its cities,
Who (H)did not [c]allow his prisoners to go home?’

11 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 12 “Son of man, (A)take up a song of mourning over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“You [a]had the seal of [b]perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in (B)Eden, the garden of God;
(C)Every precious stone was your covering:
The (D)ruby, the topaz and the diamond;
The beryl, the onyx and the jasper;
The lapis lazuli, the turquoise and the emerald;
And the gold, the workmanship of your [c](E)settings and [d]sockets,
Was in you.
On the day that you were created
They were prepared.
14 You were the (F)anointed cherub who [e]covers,
And I placed you there.
You were on the holy (G)mountain of God;
You walked in the midst of the (H)stones of fire.
15 You were (I)blameless in your ways
From the day you were created
Until (J)unrighteousness was found in you.
16 By the (K)abundance of your trade
[f]You were internally (L)filled with violence,
And you sinned;
Therefore I have cast you as profane
From the mountain of God.
And I have destroyed you, you [g]covering cherub,
From the midst of the stones of fire.
17 Your heart was haughty because of your (M)beauty;
You (N)corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor.
I threw you to the ground;
I put you before (O)kings,
That they may see you.
18 By the multitude of your wrongdoings,
In the unrighteousness of your trade
You profaned your sanctuaries.
Therefore I have brought (P)fire from the midst of you;
It has consumed you,
And I have turned you to (Q)ashes on the earth
In the eyes of all who see you.
19 All who know you among the peoples
Are appalled at you;
You have become [h](R)terrified
And you will cease to be (S)forever.”’”

And after He had (A)fasted for forty days and forty nights, He [a]then became hungry. And (B)the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the (C)Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written: ‘(D)Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out of the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil *took Him along into (E)the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and he *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written:

(F)He will give His angels orders concerning You’;

and

On their hands they will lift You up,
So that You do not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, [b]On the other hand, it is written: ‘(G)You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

(H)Again, the devil *took Him along to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; and he said to Him, “(I)All these things I will give You, if You fall down and [c]worship me.” 10 Then Jesus *said to him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘(J)You shall worship the Lord your God, and [d]serve Him only.’” 11 Then the devil *left Him; and behold, (K)angels came and began to serve Him.
