²⁰ At this, Job got up and tore his robe^(A) and shaved his head.^(B) Then he fell to the ground in worship^(C)

⁶ Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.^(A)

¹⁶ David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and spent the nights lying^(A) in sackcloth^[a] on the ground. ¹⁷ The elders of his household stood beside him to get him up from the ground, but he refused,^(B) and he would not eat any food with them.^(C)

¹⁸ On the seventh day the child died. David’s attendants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they thought, “While the child was still living, he wouldn’t listen to us when we spoke to him. How can we now tell him the child is dead? He may do something desperate.”

¹⁹ David noticed that his attendants were whispering among themselves, and he realized the child was dead. “Is the child dead?” he asked.

“Yes,” they replied, “he is dead.”

²⁰ Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed,^(D) put on lotions and changed his clothes,^(E) he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate.

³ When I heard this, I tore^(A) my tunic and cloak, pulled hair from my head and beard and sat down appalled.^(B)

³⁴ Then Jacob tore his clothes,^(A) put on sackcloth^(B) and mourned for his son many days.^(C)

²⁹ When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes.^(A)

¹⁸ Then once again I fell^(A) prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water,^(B) because of all the sin you had committed,^(C) doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger.

³ When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the Lord above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying,

³⁹ Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup^(A) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”^(B)
