¹² The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has^(A) is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”^(B)

Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

³¹ “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked^(A) to sift all of you as wheat.^{(B) 32} But I have prayed for you,^(C) Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”^(D)

⁷ or because of these surpassingly great revelations.^(A) Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh,^(B) a messenger of Satan,^(C) to torment me.

³⁵ The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.^{(A) 36} Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,^(B) but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

¹³ No temptation^[a] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful;^(A) he will not let you be tempted^[b] beyond what you can bear.^(B) But when you are tempted,^[c] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

⁴ “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has^(A) for his own life. ⁵ But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones,^(B) and he will surely curse you to your face.”^(C)

⁶ The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands;^(D) but you must spare his life.”^(E)

⁷ So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.^(F)

¹¹ Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.^(A) Therefore the one who handed me over to you^(B) is guilty of a greater sin.”

³² A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. ³³ When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake^(A) and was drowned.
