After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, (A)terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth; (B)it devoured and broke in pieces (C)and stamped what was left with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and (D)it had ten horns. I considered the horns, and behold, (E)there came up among them another horn, a little one, (F)before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and (G)a mouth speaking great things.

The Ancient of Days Reigns

“As I looked,

(H)thrones were placed,
    and the (I)Ancient of Days took his seat;
(J)his clothing was white as snow,
    and (K)the hair of his head like pure wool;
his throne was fiery flames;
    (L)its wheels were burning fire.
10 (M)A stream of fire issued
    and came out from before him;
(N)a thousand thousands (O)served him,
    (P)and ten thousand times ten thousand (Q)stood before him;
the (R)court sat in judgment,
    and (S)the books were opened.

11 “I looked then because of the sound of (T)the great words that the horn was speaking. And as I looked, (U)the beast was killed, and its body destroyed (V)and given over to be burned with fire. 12 As for the rest of the beasts, (W)their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.

The Son of Man Is Given Dominion

13 “I saw in the night visions,

and (X)behold, with the clouds of heaven
    there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the (Y)Ancient of Days
    and was presented before him.
14 (Z)And to him was given dominion
    and glory and a kingdom,
that all (AA)peoples, nations, and languages
    should serve him;
(AB)his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
    which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
    that shall not be destroyed.

Daniel's Vision Interpreted

15 “As for me, Daniel, my spirit within me[a] was anxious, and (AC)the visions of my head alarmed me. 16 I approached one of those who stood there and asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of the things. 17 (AD)‘These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth. 18 But (AE)the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever.’

19 “Then I desired to know the truth about (AF)the fourth beast, which was different from all the rest, exceedingly terrifying, with its teeth of iron and claws of bronze, and which devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet, 20 (AG)and about the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn that came up and before which three of them fell, the horn that had eyes and a mouth that spoke great things, and that seemed greater than its companions. 21 As I looked, this horn (AH)made war with the saints and prevailed over them, 22 until the (AI)Ancient of Days came, and (AJ)judgment was given for the saints of the Most High, and the time came when (AK)the saints possessed the kingdom.

23 “Thus he said: ‘As for (AL)the fourth beast,

there shall be a fourth kingdom on earth,
    which shall be different from all the kingdoms,
and it shall devour the whole earth,
    and trample it down, and break it to pieces.
24 As for the ten horns,
out of this kingdom ten kings shall arise,
    and another shall arise after them;
he shall be different from the former ones,
    and shall put down three kings.
25 (AM)He shall speak words against the Most High,
    and shall wear out the saints of the Most High,
    and shall think to (AN)change the times and the law;
and they shall be given into his hand
    for (AO)a time, times, and half a time.
26 (AP)But the court shall sit in judgment,
    and (AQ)his dominion shall be taken away,
    to be consumed and destroyed (AR)to the end.
27 (AS)And the kingdom and the dominion
    and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven
    shall be given to the people of (AT)the saints of the Most High;
(AU)his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom,
    and all dominions shall serve and obey him.’[b]

28 “Here is the end of the matter. (AV)As for me, Daniel, my (AW)thoughts greatly alarmed me, (AX)and my color changed, but (AY)I kept the matter in my heart.”

It had large iron(B) teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled(C) underfoot whatever was left.(D) It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.(E)

“While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little(F) one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a human being(G) and a mouth that spoke boastfully.(H)

10 A river of fire(N) was flowing,
    coming out from before him.(O)
Thousands upon thousands attended him;
    ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The court was seated,
    and the books(P) were opened.

11 “Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking.(Q) I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire.(R) 12 (The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.)

13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man,[a](S) coming(T) with the clouds of heaven.(U) He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority,(V) glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him.(W) His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom(X) is one that will never be destroyed.(Y)

The Interpretation of the Dream

15 “I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me.(Z) 16 I approached one of those standing there and asked him the meaning of all this.

“So he told me and gave me the interpretation(AA) of these things: 17 ‘The four great beasts are four kings that will rise from the earth. 18 But the holy people(AB) of the Most High will receive the kingdom(AC) and will possess it forever—yes, for ever and ever.’(AD)

19 “Then I wanted to know the meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others and most terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws—the beast that crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. 20 I also wanted to know about the ten horns(AE) on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully.(AF) 21 As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy people and defeating them,(AG) 22 until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.(AH)

23 “He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it.(AI) 24 The ten horns(AJ) are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. 25 He will speak against the Most High(AK) and oppress his holy people(AL) and try to change the set times(AM) and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time.[b](AN)

26 “‘But the court will sit, and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed(AO) forever. 27 Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of all the kingdoms(AP) under heaven will be handed over to the holy people(AQ) of the Most High.(AR) His kingdom will be an everlasting(AS) kingdom, and all rulers will worship(AT) and obey him.’

28 “This is the end of the matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled(AU) by my thoughts,(AV) and my face turned pale,(AW) but I kept the matter to myself.”
